A level results day

I’ve read on here that the UCAS track is sometimes updated on the morning of results day, so some students know whether or not they got their place before collecting results. I wondered if those with older dcs can clarify a couple of things.

  1. Is it all, most or just a few students whose track will be updated? I’m not sure if dd should expect to see this or be worried if nothing shows when she logs in?
  1. Is this just for automatic acceptance, I.e. where a student met or exceeded an offer, so presumably no need for someone in the uni to make any decision? Or might some decision-making have happened e.g. if a student dropped one grade but was still accepted. When would the student know in this type of situation, and how long before they are passed on to the insurance choice or clearing?

Very helpful info here. Thanks, those who’ve come out the other side!

goodbyestranger · 09/08/2019 22:16

PantTwizzler DS2 missed his Oxford grades by one grade and he only knew when he went into school because Track had updated at 7.30am to say place confirmed. The college sent a follow up e-mail a couple of hours later to say despite slightly missing your grades we still want you to come. In fact his grades went up (a daft amount - eighteen marks or something) so he hit a top A* in the end. But at the time he was sitting on AAB and Oxford had already looked - presumably at his aptitude test and interview scores - and made a decision in his favour. He graduated with a first so they do seem to know what they're doing.

Goodness me goodbye!!

Jimjamjooney · 11/08/2019 15:57

When I received my results 5 years ago I saw on Track that I'd been accepted to my first choice. Then I collected my results and realised I'd missed my offer Grin

Stellamboscha · 12/08/2019 08:12

Have seen this from two sides, ad s parent and as a 6th form teacher-so I will he in school on Thurs (from 7am!😀 -pupils can co e from 8) helping pupils who have not made their grades.
The process has become more interesting (and chaotic!)with the added possibility of 'adjustment' ie pupils who outperform their firm and want to trade up. This combined with the reduced number of students makes me think that there will be lot more 'churn' and the need for the student to be calm (ie have thought through potential scenarios and researched on uCAS and The Student Room and helpful to have a calm parent in tow, supporting but not interfering.
Last year my youngest child got her results online (school intranet) at 7am. The portal was actually active st 6am when I saw on the parent portal....She had dropped a grade, but luckily already had an email from her firm confirming her place. Track did not update till mid morning so would have been a nail biting time if she had not already heard from the university. as the Uni website specifically told candidates NOT to ring as email decision was final.
Her school told pupils NOT to go in to celebrate-but open from 7am for pupils to get help from the 6th form team. Sadly many schools have mingled groups celebrating and devastated-not s good combination. The school I work In has an old-fashioned set up with everyone required to come in anytime after 8am and no portal access ☹️

SauvignonBlanche · 12/08/2019 11:48

I remember DS got a text before 8am from his insurance offer on the way in for his results.
DD’s school have asked that those who get in their firm choice come in a bit later to allow more time for those who need help.

Lililili · 14/08/2019 11:44

I am feeling anxious about results as we are abroad. The rest of the family have plans for tomorrow, but DD and I have planned to stay in if necessary to make calls etc.

olliepolly · 14/08/2019 15:28

The whole mingling of the ecstatically happy and devastated is really tough.
I have very mixed feelings about it but am interested in reading of the variation in which schools handle this.
We have the all go in early thing 7.30 opening.
they are good at shepherding those off to the computer suite all set up for help with staff allocated. But still a lot of the jumping photos etc.
Part of me feels there is something not right about it all but not sure what better would look like. In some way it does serve as a punctuation /ending of their school career a chance to say goodbye ( for some parents too )
I do feel quite sick as did not realise how strong the memory is still of waiting to hear if DD1 had got into vet school.
DD2 results tomorrow and DS1 at another school so link with the girls school ends tomorrow.
We have just lost grandma on 8/8 so in the middle of funeral arrangements .
Pretty emotional all around .

SauvignonBlanche · 14/08/2019 15:32

I took DD into town for breakfast today and bumped into one of her friends, I was impressed with how clam the friend seemed in relation to DD than found out that friend has an unconditional offer so very different experience.

Have got her to fill a notebook with potential phone numbers ready for tomorrow.

greengrower · 15/08/2019 00:29

After the last few days of increasingly abusive meltdowns from DS im really finding it hard to sleep and am dreading the results as I fear ( with good reason :( ) that the results will not be what he expects. Which will lead to a whole lot of shouting, abuse of us and unpleasant behaviours, tomorrow. Fingers crossed it will be OK for all of our children xxx

jessamie · 15/08/2019 00:56

Good luck @greengrower - hope you get to sleep soon and results are better than you fear x

SauvignonBlanche · 15/08/2019 07:59

According to Track DD is into her firm choice! Grin
No idea about results yet, we’ll go a bit later to allow time for those that need support.

Good luck everyone else.

greengrower · 15/08/2019 09:01

DS got into his first choice :) about to go and get results, but do happy for him, regardless :)

VivaLeBeaver · 15/08/2019 09:40

Dd didn't get her predicted grades by some way. 2 grades lower in 2 subjects and a grade lower in the other. Had an unconditional though so looking on the bright side. She's been very poorly this year so not totally unexpected.

Sunflowers11 · 15/08/2019 09:46

Well pretty stressed right now. DS got offered Conditional Offer for Durham based on A*AA, which he gotGrinbut on UCAS this morning it said he has not met the requirements for Durham. 😩

DearDeirdre · 15/08/2019 09:57

How frustrating @Sunflowers11! Can you phone them and check there's not a mistake. Durham are so inflexible, did they want the * in a specific subject?

He's got such amazing results, well done to your DS! I hope you sort it out quickly.

Rivkka · 15/08/2019 10:17

It must be a mistake sunflowers. I hope it's sorted soon

Sunflowers11 · 15/08/2019 10:20

Hi @DearDeirdre @Rivkka thank you!

His tutors are raging with Durham, he is at college trying to sort it. I mean what do kids have to do these days just to get into Uni?
Poor lad was happy but tearful when he got his results. This is just cruel.

SauvignonBlanche · 15/08/2019 11:37

No one seems to got into Durham this year!

DD did better than her predicted grades. The uni she really wanted to go to had rejected her in her predicted grades. She called them after getting her results and they said they would have taken her but had just given their last place away. Sad

Such a crazy system Angry

greengrower · 15/08/2019 11:47

A A C :) He is really pleased, as are we. So relieved!

Witchend · 15/08/2019 12:21

@Sunflowers11

DD1 says similar has happened to a friend. She says that UCAS should help here. If he's met the requirements, they have to accept and Durham doesn't have an option.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 15/08/2019 12:47

What Witchend said.

@Sunflowers11 what were the exact conditions of the offer?

(I work in this area)

DD2 didn't get her hoped for A but an B instead so the morning started in floods of tears. We drove to school to speak to teacher and found whilst with teacher and dd was able to get into ucas that 1st choice uni has accepted her anyway.. More tears but this time happy ones.

PalmersGreen · 15/08/2019 16:34

SauvignonBlanche She could do a gap year? Working Year? Or try to change courses later...
