A level results day

Lasteleven · 03/08/2019 18:23

I’ve read on here that the UCAS track is sometimes updated on the morning of results day, so some students know whether or not they got their place before collecting results. I wondered if those with older dcs can clarify a couple of things.

  1. Is it all, most or just a few students whose track will be updated? I’m not sure if dd should expect to see this or be worried if nothing shows when she logs in?
  1. Is this just for automatic acceptance, I.e. where a student met or exceeded an offer, so presumably no need for someone in the uni to make any decision? Or might some decision-making have happened e.g. if a student dropped one grade but was still accepted. When would the student know in this type of situation, and how long before they are passed on to the insurance choice or clearing?

If DC has narrowly missed for the firm, who do they call on the day, please? Where do you get the number you need to call from? Is it admissions you need to call or the actual department? Would the uni have a dedicated line for this?

I am so sorry! I do not know why it posted a million times? Not sure how to delete the posts!

Marking place, we're away with DS1 (And 2 & 3) next week when the results come in so getting plan A, B, C & D in place. First time for us so not a clue.

LIZS · 05/08/2019 22:30

@Puzzledmum admissions office in the first instance, they may then refer through to the admissions tutor for the department.

titchy · 05/08/2019 22:46

Phone the clearing line - admission tutors and teams will be on the phones in the hot room (!) not sitting at their usual desks.

Bear in mind though if your firm has rejected you they've had your results for several days and will have given due consideration already - so be prepared to be told no on the phone.

Assume you have internet and phone whilst away? Check the day before for vacancies and grades. Get up early Thursday!

Presumably, either the school relays results by email or some other electronic means, or has your DS authorised someone to collect his results for him? I do hope that he gets either his firm or his insurance university and therefore plans B - n will not be neededSmile.

(Did you plan to be away, though?).

Puzzledmum · 06/08/2019 06:11

@LIZS and @titchy many thanks! I hope we do not come to this but shall keep in mind. Good luck to all DC!

Decorhate · 06/08/2019 08:53

Another thing to bear in mind - if they miss their firm and school agree it’s worth going for a remark, it is probably a good idea to let the firm know. Some will honour the original offer if the remark goes in your favour (as ling as you get a priority remark so it comes back before the end of August)

I think that although universities get the grades before results day, they don’t get the actual marks so can’t tell if it’s a near miss or not?

Correct.

Danglingmod · 06/08/2019 10:02

I'm not sure if they do or not.

I know a few years ago of an acquaintance whose daughter didn't get her required maths grade for a top Uni (think it was Bristol or somewhere) but - unsolicited - they offered her physics because she got an A in physics AND scored highly in the bits of maths that were relevant - so they must have had access to the marks on each paper.

TigerDragonMonkey · 06/08/2019 11:02

I worked as a uni admissions administrator until a couple of years ago and processing the A level results and offers was part of my job :). So I might be able to answer more specific questions about UCAS track and the process.
To clarify, universities get the results the weekend before and we used to work all weekend making the decisions and putting them on UCAS track ready for results day. Anyone who missed their grades would get sent to the department for a decision so would usually still have their decision on track in time for results.
We were allowed to make decisions on insurance offers, so if the firm choice rejects they would automatically become an unconditional firm with us (assuming they met the requirements for our course!).

stucknoue · 06/08/2019 11:14

UCAS opens at 8am and students (usually) know if they are in (it's not 100% because borderline students may be accepted later in the day if lots of students have turned the course down, DD's friend found out at 4pm Oxford accepted her!). A level results are available online at 6am.

stucknoue · 06/08/2019 11:16

Dd has a summer job uploading results onto the university system from Monday!

NotWavingButMNing · 06/08/2019 15:49

Mine both had UCAS updated by 8am.
They also got their results from school online, no old fashioned "collecting results".
I think the sixth form put on a host of staff ready for those with disappointing A level results.

Definitely wouldn't want to be away on results day unless your DC is confident of grades. If there is a need to use clearing or adjustment you would want to be on the phone all day and possibly available for some last minute uni visits.

greengrower · 08/08/2019 21:01

DS has ASD, incredibly secretive, won't accept any help or advice. So we have had no input into his A level results or Uni application, apart from transport and support to open days and student loan application. It's very hard to be supportive under these conditions

BackforGood · 08/08/2019 23:31

Another who has 2 older ones who knew they had their places by 8am, long before they could go in to school.
dc1 hadn't got the offer grades, and was still offered place on his course.

Re going in with them - depends on the dc.
dc1 went on his own
dc2 wanted us to go with her.

Sunndowne · 09/08/2019 05:44

Greengrower, that's hard if you want to help. Have you tried talking through his choices of how to get results or how to proceed if he does not get his firm? Can you look up clearing now and write down a few uni admissions numbers?
Would he be annoyed if you wrote down for him the different ways students proceed on results day.
Being organised might make results and necessary actions smoother for all of you. Flowers

MarchingFrogs · 09/08/2019 07:28

Greengrower, if your DS has handled everything to do with UCAS unaided so far, (hopefully) he may already have had a good read of the information and advice about results day section of the website.

ArtisanPopcorn · 09/08/2019 08:17

I work in admissions, we get the results Friday, process most of them over the weekend then the academics have until Wednesday to make decisions on ones that don't meet requirements so nearly all should have decisions on UCAS track by Thursday morning.

DearDeirdre · 09/08/2019 08:35

DD got her results by Email and track updated at around the same time. She has a near miss (one raw mark) for her firm and was accepted by her insurance.

She contacted the college that rejected her (complicated because it was Cambridge and she was also placed in the pool) and they said they would honour the offer if the grade went up. She got the extra mark and has now graduated.

I still feel sick thinking about those few days, DD was so down, it's a horribly stressful time Flowers and more importantly Wine for you for next week.

Weaverspin · 09/08/2019 08:44

DearDeirdre - so she went for a re-mark? How long did that take? It's a horrible time, this waiting...

Purplepooch · 09/08/2019 08:54

I feel sick waiting. Dc is my 3rd and it feels so much harder with no AS to go on. Also he is very very focused on his firm !
My older two both found out by 7.30/ 8 on track. One got their firm and one their insurance but both very happy where they went.

DearDeirdre · 09/08/2019 09:02

@Weaverspin she got the remark on the Monday morning, four days after we applied for it. It was emailed as we were driving to her insurance uni to check out accommodation options.

DD2 also went up on review (we don't do happy, champagne fuelled results days at Deirdre Towers!) but was taking a gap year, so all a bit more relaxed!
