History/joint Ancient History -where am I missing?

I’m trying to help my son narrow down his choices for university. He wants to study history but his interest is in older periods not the modern periods. Not single honours Ancient but possibly joint honours Ancient and History.

We don’t have predictions yet but he just sat his AS(internal equivalent) and got B (just missed an A) History, C (Geology) and E Business (just off a D and completely misread a question which lost him 20%).

He will be going over Business and Geology over the summer to try and up his grades.

Anyway he wants a uni in England and a town campus. So far he’s visited:

Liverpool Uni (aspirational I think but he really liked it)
Liverpool John Moore’s -the course is too
modern
Kent - too rural/remote/not enough buzz

Next on the list are Lincoln, Manchester Met, Birmingham, Nottingham (foundation course), possibly Reading.

He’s said no to UEA- too remote.

What have we missed?! I should add that he is dyslexic so a decent support department is vital. He will be applying to defer as he wants to work and travel.

Thanks!

Birmingham, Exeter, Leeds, Leicester, Reading all offer history and ancient history joint courses.

My son wants to do History degree but is opposite to yours as prefers modern history I.e post 1900 ! Power and conflict , civil rights etc.

Have looked at Leeds - want 3 A,s
And Exeter AAB

Notsureabouthis · 26/06/2019 19:32

Thanks! Exeter and Leeds requirements will be too high I think.....

Leicester could be an option -it’s ABB... not sure that’s realistic though!

@checkoutno3please - yes straight History harder to get into. I’m surprised Exeter
only AAB actually!

Leicester accepted DS1 with BBC.
Not rural or remote; it's in a city.
Helpful disability / SpLD support team.
Good History department.

DS1 is doing the regular History course and is picking mostly modern history modules, so check what courses are available that include Ancient History.

Whichever universities he applies to, I suggest your son applies for DSA for the dyslexia. There is note-taking and audio capture software available and he would probably get funding for this.

TheFirstOHN · 26/06/2019 19:41

Ancient History and History at Leicester

If you scroll down, you can see which modules he would study.

dreichuplands · 26/06/2019 19:42

Has he considered a history/archaeology combination?
I found archaeology great as a dyslexic because it was a mixture of practical as well as essay based.

Notsureabouthis · 26/06/2019 20:06

@TheFirstOHN -Leicester looks interesting. Thanks! We’ll take a look at that, how does your son like it the town/Uni?

Notsureabouthis · 26/06/2019 20:07

@dreichuplands - he’s discounted Archeology for various reasons. A shame as I agree with you!

@MarchingFrogs - I’m sure he’d love Southampton as he wants somewhere sunny! 😆 I think those grades are a tall order and no EPQ unfortunately.

Derby does joint honours.. .

Some places are quite modular, so he can choose from different eras....

Invisimamma · 26/06/2019 20:14

Sorry I know you said England but what about University of Edinburgh?

Notsureabouthis · 26/06/2019 20:18

Thanks both! Edinburgh not an option for various reasons.

He likes the University of Leicester and the city.

The cost of living is low compared to a lot of university cities, which is a plus.

TheWoollybacksWife · 26/06/2019 21:34

My DD studied Ancient History (and Archaeology) at Leicester and loved it. She enjoyed the course and living in the city.

Sunndowne · 27/06/2019 08:33

Yes

CouldBeOuting · 27/06/2019 19:25

My DD has just graduated (with a first 🙌) from Reading. She did joint honours History & Ancient History.

She chose Reading because of the choice of modules available and loved it there.

Stardustmoon · 27/06/2019 20:01

Reading does joint and is a great uni with fantastic support for SEN. I agree that Archaeology is fab for dyslexic students. I was down to do Ancient history with History and changed last min to Ancient history and Archaeology and it was the best thing I did. I'm dyslexic too and I struggled with the Ancient history side. Luckily I did really well in archaeology and ended up with a 2:1. Happy to answer any questions you might have.

TheFirstOHN · 27/06/2019 21:02

CouldBeOuting congratulations to her!

DOLLYDAYDREAMER · 02/07/2019 23:08

DD just finished history degree at Leicester. Would recommend Uni and especially History dept. Supportive tutors. Enjoyed living there. It is a city but quite green and cheap compared to some other place . Good selection of topics / periods to choose from
