History/joint Ancient History -where am I missing?

Notsureabouthis · 26/06/2019 18:46

I’m trying to help my son narrow down his choices for university. He wants to study history but his interest is in older periods not the modern periods. Not single honours Ancient but possibly joint honours Ancient and History.

We don’t have predictions yet but he just sat his AS(internal equivalent) and got B (just missed an A) History, C (Geology) and E Business (just off a D and completely misread a question which lost him 20%).

He will be going over Business and Geology over the summer to try and up his grades.

Anyway he wants a uni in England and a town campus. So far he’s visited:

Liverpool Uni (aspirational I think but he really liked it)
Liverpool John Moore’s -the course is too
modern
Kent - too rural/remote/not enough buzz

Next on the list are Lincoln, Manchester Met, Birmingham, Nottingham (foundation course), possibly Reading.

He’s said no to UEA- too remote.

What have we missed?! I should add that he is dyslexic so a decent support department is vital. He will be applying to defer as he wants to work and travel.

Thanks!

My DD has just graduated (with a first 🙌) from Reading. She did joint honours History & Ancient History.

@couldbeouting Congratulations to her! My DD has also just graduated from Reading with a First in history/ancient history! Wonder if they're friends...

TheFirstOHN · 04/07/2019 20:29

Norugratsatall Congratulations to your DD too!

CouldBeOuting · 04/07/2019 21:33

@Norugratsatall well it’s a small world so entirely possible! Congratulations to your DD. What are her plans now?

Norugratsatall · 04/07/2019 21:38

@CouldBeOuting she's doing an MA at UCL in Sept. what about your daughter?

Norugratsatall · 04/07/2019 21:38

@TheFirstOHN thank you!

CouldBeOuting · 04/07/2019 21:45

@Norugratsatall she has a few offers for MA so is now trying to decide which one to accept. More expense for the bank of mum & dad 🙄

Yep! 😁

@Notsureabouthis

You can now check the Clearing Lists for History to see which universities were unable to fill their places this year.

OKBobble · 06/07/2019 11:33

History at Exeter is A*AA www.exeter.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/history/historyexe/

It is History at their Penrhyn Campus in Cornwall that is only AAB. Do make sure you put the correct campus down and not be surprised/shocked!! www.exeter.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/history/bahistory/

They are different courses in different locations.

Notsureabouthis · 06/07/2019 16:18

Yes Exeter and Bristol definitely out due to too high requirements. We’re looking at ABB as maximum. No predictions yet but he got BCE in his end of year exams. The B just missed an A and the E just off a D (he is going to work hard on that last one over the summer- he also totally misread a question due to dyslexia, hopefully will get software to help avoid that happening again ). The B was his History.

Do you think ABB Unis realistic?

The clearing pages are a real eye opener! What kind of grades do they accept usually compared to their advertised ones?

Can't help with English unis as DS2 only applied for Scottish unis but my input is that DS has just finished first year and did modules in ancient, modern and medieval. Medieval turned out to be his favourite and what he plans to choose for honours. Just worth knowing that there may be even more choices than ancient/ history.
I too was a bit disappointed that DS has not chosen any archaeology modules, he can't really say why he doesn't fancy it either!

chipshopElvis · 06/07/2019 16:29

Keele. Campus based but good atmosphere, dual honours, good student support.

chipshopElvis · 06/07/2019 16:32

Although just had a quick look and maybe they've stopped offering Classics.

Piggywaspushed · 06/07/2019 17:51

Wondering where you are roughly. Don't dismiss UEA as 'remote'. It really isn't. Norwich is a lovely city.

My DS is going to Lincoln. It's really nice : as 'remote' as UEA, mind.

What about Nottingham Trent? Haven't checked it does the course your DS is after but, otherwise, it ticks his boxes, I'd have thought.

hobbema · 06/07/2019 18:06

@Notsureabouthis, Others will know much better than me and hopefully come in on this.. Exeter advertised grades for History : a friend’s DS has been told they will take him for History with I think BBC.. another going for Geography also told they were v prepared to be flexible on grades on results day. Exeter also gave my DS an easier grade offer than originally stated, by one grade if he firmed with them. I think it’s more fluid than we assume and our DC next year are right at the bottom of the demographic dip so worth bearing in mind

bigbluebus · 06/07/2019 19:01

DS is doing History at Hull Uni. He also loves early history and has been able to choose modules accordingly. Hull (as a city) is much maligned but DS loves it and we have been to visit a few times and love the city too. Don't know where you are based but DS can get a train direct from Manchester Pìccadilly so not difficult to get to.

Piggywaspushed · 06/07/2019 19:05

Oh I loved Hull on an Open Day. Lovely campus; fabulous (and cheap!) accommodation. DS was offered BBC for a hums type course so that's about right.

DOLLYDAYDREAMER · 06/07/2019 21:02

There is a difference between what they would like and what some Uni's will accept - loads ask for ABB which means you could get 5 offers all the same grades - but you need to work out which ones are more forgiving - on open day or offer holders day you can ask the tutors to get an idea - DD didnt get ABB and just missed her place at Southampton but got her insurance Leicester - so glad she went there and just graduated with a first

Xenia · 07/07/2019 10:42

My son read ancient history at Reading which worked out fine for him (he got in on clearing as missed his grades for his Exeter place and his siblings were/are at Bristol x 3 and Nottingham (1)).

OKBobble · 11/07/2019 11:37

Hobbema - the history students being offered lower grades at "Exeter" are offered it at Penrhyn rather than at the Exeter campuses. It requires an AAB initially. The Exeter campus asking for A*AA generally has no problem filling their course with students performing at that level or higher.

GidgetGirl · 11/07/2019 11:43

+1 for Leicester. I did my history undergrad degree there followed by an MA in York. It obviously stood me in good stead as historic research has been my career ever since.

Also, Leicester is just a really lovely city. Just the right size, handsome architecture, quite a lot of greenery, a great place for nights out, etc etc.

Ellmau · 14/07/2019 16:48

St Andrews offers Medieval History, either on its own or joint with Archaeology. But that might be too remote for your DS.

Birmingham does Ancient & Medieval www.birmingham.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/history/history-ancient-medieval.aspx

Offers are ABB, but ime unis below the very top level are more flexible than you might think, when it comes to Clearing.

Easier to get into - have a look at Winchester's Medieval History course: www.winchester.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/ba-hons-medieval-history/
They also do Ancient, Classicial and Medieval Studies, but that has archaeology as a component which may not suit.

Chichester: Medieval and Early Modern History - www.chi.ac.uk/humanities/undergraduate/ba-hons-medieval-and-early-modern-history

Swansea (OK, I know it's Wales): Ancient History, or Ancient History and History joint: www.swansea.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/artsandhumanities/classics-ancient-history-and-egyptology/ba-ancienthistory-v112/
