The University my son has chosen has one of the worst student satisfaction ratings but is traditionally very highly rated for both course and University - would you take it seriously?

It is not difficult to believe that the criteria have encouraged grade inflation

Or places like mine, where my department offers at AAB- ABB, and gets a lot of AAA* as well. We get hammered in value-added because there's not such a huge leap from A level grades to final Honours classes.

And we're pretty good teachers!!

I don't think I even looked at the league tables before I went to uni. I knew it was traditionally a 'good' uni, and I picked it because it reminded me of hogwarts / a private school near home that I wished I had gone to 😂
I think you get out what you put in (satisfaction-wise). Appreciate that if it's an awful lecturer it can have an impact, of course, but I don't think that's the be all and end all.

Xenia · 12/06/2019 20:49

Just make sure it is one that will enable you to get to where you want to be so you make an informed choice.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/06/2019 21:03

I don't see how 'value added' can possibly work in the context of uni courses where the content level and skills acquired may be vastly different.Confused

Upzadaizy · 12/06/2019 21:31

OMG. I have NO idea why that posted so many times.

Apologies

Agree that the Guardian League table is usually out of step with the others and I think less reliable because of that. Some of their subject rankings are bizarre. My son has just finished mech eng at Strathclyde which in Scotland is the most sought after mech eng course. It's 6 on the Times 2020 list but 34th on the Guardian despite being harder to get in to and having higher satisfaction levels for the course and teaching than Dundee. Dundee also only does a BEng not an M Eng. It makes no sense. Dundee was higher than Strathclyde 5 years ago as well but wasn't one of his 5 choices (but would have been if he'd done medicine)
