Here we go!

@hannahsaunt

Which universities has your DC applied for in Scotland?

English students should hear back before Scottish as Scottish students have strict funding caps due to the fee status.

Good luck with the offers.....

eatinglesschocolate · 13/11/2018 06:31

hannahsaunt I agree with Aurea (fellow Scot). Only one that seems to be anecdotally quick for Scots is Glasgow. Not necessarily for all courses but DD's cohort pretty much heard back by return. If you're now technically not a Scottish student though, that might speed things up.

Decorhate · 13/11/2018 07:16

Laniakea Bath is his favourite at the moment but that's on the basis is a brief open day visit months ago. He will probably go to an offer holder day as visiting many, many (!) others since then will have given him a better insight into what he wants from the course etc.

Article in the Guardian today on personal statements

Nice touch from Lancaster in their 'Congrats you got an offer ' letter. They've given DD the email of a current student in her department. Any questions, just ask him. He'll then meet with her on applicant day.
Decorhate Interesting article. DD's PS was very 'personal'. Otherwise known in our house as her 'angry rant'. It seems to have worked so far. There was no mention of DofE or instruments. I would say 'show not tell' is important.

Laniakea · 13/11/2018 10:48

Dd’s at the doctor - tonsillitis again - there goes her >90% attendance Sad

Piggywaspushed · 13/11/2018 10:50

Thanks OP . Will read later!

My DS has now locked me out of Unifrog. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

ifonly4 · 13/11/2018 11:35

DD's application submitted 11 days ago, acknowledges from all within give days. Second PS has gone into Durham and she has info from Birmingham on an essay to prepare and a second PS for Warwick, so I guess we're making progress. It's going to be slow though.

PancakeMum6 · 13/11/2018 13:22

Personal statement article is interesting. I remember DD’s form tutor being very stressed out that she wasn’t following the recommended ‘formula’ - she didn’t mention her clarinet, or that she was netball captain, or her deputy head girl role, or her street dance. She was quite affronted when DD didn’t change it after her recommendation, but DD’s stance was that she just didn’t have space and her love for the subjects she’d be studying had to take precedence. As far as the universities are aware her sole extra curricular is her waitressing job (which she filled in the details for in the ‘employment’ section...) it obviously didn’t impact their decision.

KeyboardplayerXXX · 13/11/2018 13:36

Oh my word, my DD just got an unconditional offer from Birmingham. Her top choice. Cue lots of joyous screaming down the phone. She's absolutely delighted. Good luck to everyone who's waiting and well done to all those with offers. It sure is an emotional rollercoaster!!

Laniakea · 13/11/2018 13:42

DD put one sentence about a single extra curricular thing at the end - it was in the context of a particular skill she gained from it that she hoped would help with part of the course she was interested in. The rest was technical stuff she's read & courses she's done.

She's got 10 days of penicillin, has had a nap & is doing biology homework.

Laniakea · 13/11/2018 13:56

yay! That's great Keyboard Grin

KeyboardplayerXXX · 13/11/2018 14:01

Thank you. She's been so stressed and anxious recently that I really hope this gives her a confidence boost !

dancingdirty · 13/11/2018 14:25

DD's application has now been to UCAS. So its just a waiting game now is it?

ifonly4 · 13/11/2018 14:43

DD has an offer from Edinburgh - ABB (predicted A*AA) Smile . It's her only insurance so a relief. She's equally happy to go to all unis she's applied for, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if no other offers come. As posted earlier, she's got extra work for a couple of applications still and we know we're in for a long wait for some.

Aurea · 13/11/2018 14:56

Fantastic news ifonly4!

What subject does she have an offer for?

My son is waiting for Law but is Scottish which puts him to the back of the queue.

ifonly4 · 13/11/2018 15:21

Sustainable Development. Under the Scottish system, you can take modules from other subjects in first two years so can incorporate her interest in philosophy, music and human geography. Not sure, if it applies to Edinburgh, but St Andrews have the same system and you can change your final degree as long as you've taken modules in that subject in the early years.

As with Laniakea's DD the only thing not linked to the course was the mention of her music scholarship which showed she can manage her time well with many commitments.

Piggywaspushed · 13/11/2018 15:32

My DS doesn't actually have any extra curricular (or curricular really!) interests so it's just as well they don't expect them to be mentioned! The only thing we included is his coaching badge as apparently FA coaching is not worhy of the qualifications drop down menu.

PancakeMum6 · 13/11/2018 15:43

Great news keyboard and ifonly4!! Well done to both your DC.

ifonly4 · 13/11/2018 16:06

Thanks Pancake

Piggy I did wonder if lack of extra curricular would go against her. It was all about the course, even twisting around her year 10 work experience (nothing to do with sustainability) into it.

hanahsaunt · 13/11/2018 16:23

@aurea - he has applied to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee (his order of preference), holding the fifth slot for further consideration. For some reason Edinburgh has assessed him as home/EU for fees despite his usual residency being England which is worrying in terms of getting an offer. He had noted on his form that he technically has one EU parent as his dad is from Northern Ireland and holds an Irish passport per the GFA. We both find this quite bizarre and would rather pay fees than have him overlooked. We have raised it with admissions...

madmum5811 · 13/11/2018 16:29

Are year 13 supposed to be applying now? Our bloody school asked for the personal statements to be in at beginning of term in September, then the teacher in charge went off sick.

Piggywaspushed · 13/11/2018 16:32

They must have put in a replacement madmum !?

LIZS · 13/11/2018 16:32

Main Deadline for 2019 entry is in January so yes most are completing applications now.

madmum5811 · 13/11/2018 16:38

No they have not put in a replacement, they really are bloody useless. I chased them a month ago and was just told teacher off sick. I feel sick now. Will speak to son. They did not even advise them to go to the open days. The head said oh parents will have organised that themselves. So I asked around the parents I spoke to did not know what was going on either.

I feel sick with worry now.
