Here we go!

She just needs to phone them and they will send it to her. Somebody did it right at the beginning of this thread (maybe p2?)

ifonly4 · 09/11/2018 14:39

Laniakea - DD's school ask for comments from all teachers and supposedly take the best bits. They also ask students if there's anything in particular they want mentioned. It'd still be interesting to see though.

Aurea · 09/11/2018 15:32

You (if you have permission on their UCAS application) or your child can phone up UCAS and ask for their school reference.

We did so, they gave us a password on the phone and within 20 minutes they had sent an email with the password protected document of the reference.

Its very easy to do and costs nothing.

Monkey2001 · 09/11/2018 15:47

I think it may have to be the DC. I called them before DS told me he did not want it (as I thought he should make sure he remembered what it said for interviews), but they told me it had to be him although he put my details as a contact.

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2018 16:43

monkey yes, indeed: but in theory he could get two achievable offers (NTU and Lincoln or Portsmouth which are all BCC ish) and he wouldn't accept them all.

If Hull or Aber give him an offer , I'll obviously be encouraging him to take that as firm.

As of taody, I now know two of his PGs which are a B and a C. Politics (the key one) apparently have not entered one yet.

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2018 16:46

I found actual grades (or typical ones) on Which ? and Unifrog, but not unistats? Whereabouts does it show that?

Monkey2001 · 09/11/2018 17:08

Unistats show actual UCAS points. You can create a comparison table with all the courses under consideration and look at the Admissions Info tab.

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2018 17:23

I tried that and it didn't do it... will look again.

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2018 17:35

Found it! Didn't see the drop down arrow. You can also work out how many places they have, which is useful. Aber's students have nowhere near what they have as their entrance requirements, seemingly. But there do seem to be only12 places (ish)

twosoups1972 · 09/11/2018 17:41

Can I join?

I've posted on another thread about the problems my dd is having. She's really struggling writing the PS among other things.

How important is the PS?

Also, will she be at a disadvantage applying later ie in a few weeks' time when so many people have already received offers?

VanCleefArpels · 09/11/2018 18:24

twosoups honestly don’t worry - those of us whose DC’s have got offers already will have been early entrants (Oxbridge, medicine etc) or in schools where they encourage early application to get it off the to do list.

Re the importance of the PS, it will differ depending on course and institutions but my personal view is that for most courses at most places as long as the predicted grades match or are better than the usual offer you will get an offer. However where the PS may come into play is if the results don’t quite go to plan and the Uni has to reconsider. So worth spending a bit of time on,but not to the extent that it causes angst

twosoups1972 · 09/11/2018 18:27

Thank you vancleef I will tell my dd that.

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2018 20:30

The work of fiction otherwise known as DS's personal statement is finished!!!

Halleluia!!!!!!

eatinglesschocolate · 09/11/2018 20:38

piggy Grin Enjoy that glass of wine!

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2018 20:41

hahah! It may even be gin!

He is begging me for a glass of beer as a reward. I gave him prawn crackers. Grin

Decorhate · 09/11/2018 20:42

Hurrah Piggy!

VanCleefArpels · 09/11/2018 23:31

piggy well done. Love “work of fiction” 😂. The phrase most used in respect of my older child’s PS was “polished turd”

PancakeMum6 · 10/11/2018 01:23

Great news piggy!! Well done to your DS. That’s a huge weight off your shoulders.

Piggywaspushed · 10/11/2018 06:34

Serin · 10/11/2018 09:15

DS submitted his nursing application on Tues to school and had 3 interview offers in by yesterday. Am amazed by the swift turnaround at school. They are usually quite slow to respond to anything. They are all quite soon as well. Sheffield’s is next week Shock

Monkey2001 · 10/11/2018 10:35

Serin that was quick! Is it right that a nursing degree is free in Wales? Various health related degrees seem to be free in Wales if you are prepared to work in the Welsh NHS for a few years after graduating.

ifonly4 · 10/11/2018 11:01

piggy, that's a relief.

*twosoups" - as said before, it depends on the course. There are many who don't believe PSs are even looked at. However, we do know from speaking to Heads of Departments that Warwick and St Andrews will look at them closely. In fact, for her course if her grades slip, Warwick go back and look at PS again before making a final yes/no.

Laniakea · 10/11/2018 11:38

thanks Aurea & Monkey she's going to call them on Monday.

Piggy ... congratulations :D relief!

Blimey Serin that's fast!

DD was feeling a bit glum about life this morning & went out for a walk but she just phoned me to say she has an offer. Bangor - 128 points with two A levels - physics at A or B and either chemistry or biology for the other one. She's got 44 points already ... she could get in with BB.

Chucknology · 10/11/2018 15:39

New on this thread. Hello Smile

Has anyone heard from Warwick yet?

bigTillyMint · 10/11/2018 16:31

Pancakemum, I don't know the backstory, but could your DD apply for both Newcastle and Durham then she stands a good chance of getting into one or the other? They are only about half an hour apart so I guess it's a question of big lively city or quieter more countrified small city.
