I think it's comfort eating more than Wine at the moment!

Is everyone's children here doing a Levels? Do they get a response from unis quicker?

twosoups1972 · 12/12/2018 11:48

Thank you newmodelarmy

If you're applying to somewhere that has its typical offer expressed in terms of A level grades, then yes it can be quicker as admissions is usually centralised for the 'bog standard' applicants. Where qualifications are outside the normal expected ones for that university they'll be sent on to the department which delays things a little.

A university that expresses its typical offer in terms of tariff should be as quick though.

DS finally got his UCAS sent off after waiting for his teacher to do the references for a few weeks.

I can't help but wonder if time when replies/ offers will be slow as Unis finish early for Xmas. I think he may not hear until mid January.

Anyone have any experience?

glitterbiscuits that's what we were told by DS's Head of Sixth Form when the former's application went in late Friday pm. He has since got an offer from Exeter and according to 'track' the other four others are all considering his appication (it was only one of the four yesterday). So who knows? Prepare for a longish wait but you/your DS may be pleasantly surprised...

titchy · 12/12/2018 15:15

Admissions offices are open till next Friday at most if not all universities so offers will continue to be made although not on office Christmas lunch day!

ifonly4 · 12/12/2018 15:17

Charlie DD is at a school that does IB and A levels. Her friends taking the IB have had more offers than her, but I think this is purely down to the courses she's chosen and the fact she's had to provide additional PSs for two and an essay for one). However, the one offer she's had is from Edinburgh (apparently she's the only so far and some felt quite envious as it's their first choice). From this, I don't think it makes a difference as long as the unis accept whatever exams have been taken.

glitter DD has applied for a course where they required an essay. Apparently they reject/offer within 25 days of receipt (which takes her up to 26/12) so hoping uni make an early decision, otherwise it'll be sat with UCAS for the week. The uni concerned are only open two days between xmas and new year but I think UCAS it closed over the xmas period.

MarchingFrogs · 12/12/2018 15:45

The students may finish early fpr Christmas, but not necessarily academics / admin staff.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/12/2018 15:49

I agree but bow to the superior insights of a SLT teacher with years of knowledge of the UCAS application process.

ifonly4 · 12/12/2018 15:55

Second offer just in from St AndrewsGrin! DD thought she'd have to wait until Feb/Mar as they don't consider the majority of applications until 15 Jan so this was unexpected.

ifonly4 · 12/12/2018 17:08

sorry, me again. Ive just checked the website again of the uni DD is expecting to hear from close to Christmas - it's been changed - whole uni is closed from 21st Dec and admissions opens 4th Jan pm only, so it does look like some unis go for complete closure.

titchy · 12/12/2018 17:20

21st is next Friday as I said! So still open for a week and a bit.

twosoups1972 · 12/12/2018 18:55

Well done to your dd ifonly4

We had a surprise today - 24 hours after applying, dd received an offer from Swansea! Low offer of 120 UCAS points. It's not really where she wants to go but boy, has it given her a boost! She's away at boarding school and phoned to tell me, I could tell by her voice she was very happy. I haven't heard her sound like that for a long time.

Hopefully other offers will start coming in.

CharlieandHannah · 12/12/2018 19:13

Well DD is now happy and I can stop asking stuff! She has just received an offer for Kent.

Piggywaspushed · 12/12/2018 19:17

NEWSFLASH! It has been sent!

All the language and declarations are very scary, aren't they?
To be fair to the school, the lady had spotted a typing error and that he had missed off his science GCSEs (duh). She showed him his reference (he won't tell me what it says, but he says it's 'all lies' , which proabbly means it was nice...)

On the UCAS site, it says you can't log in to track unitl you have received a welome letter. How long did that take for you guys?

Danglingmod · 12/12/2018 19:36

Think we paid and submitted about 7pm one night, school did their bit next morning and ds had track email by 5pm that day and offers the next morning!

Danglingmod · 12/12/2018 19:37

Ps. Amazing news!

glitterbiscuits · 12/12/2018 19:54

Newmodelarmy I think you and I both have DSs looking at Geography.

He's had 4 acknowledgements out of 5. All 4 of these have the same entry requirements.
I'd like him to be offered an unconditional. But then I'd have liked him to apply to different places and mix up the grade requirements.

AtiaoftheJulii · 12/12/2018 19:57

Piggy - hooray!!! So bloody pleased! Finally Grin

And congrats to all those with offers today, fantastic news Smile

Piggywaspushed · 12/12/2018 20:12

Oh, so the letter in the post bit is not right, then? Well, that's probably just as well since our postie steals our post

Danglingmod · 12/12/2018 20:15

Tell him to check his email (ds wouldn't know about his offers now if I hadn't... He never ever looks at his phone!)

Piggywaspushed · 12/12/2018 20:18

haha! I check his emails, too! I have them on my laptop. Mwahahaha.

Maybe I should just cut out the middle man and go to university for him? Grin

Danglingmod · 12/12/2018 20:20

I was thinking of starting a masters at the same time at the same place Grin

GoldenRuby · 12/12/2018 22:29

Final offer in for DS tonight from Brighton. Had to have an assessment day for this one as it was a teacher training degree. It was probably his third choice behind UEA and Birmingham. He is going to the Birmingham offer holder day in Jan; it is his highest offer, so if he doesn't like it as much as UEA he will reject Birmingham and firm UEA. As the Brighton offer is the same as UEAs he probably won't put it as his insurance and probably go for NTU instead. Hopefully very academic by this stage as the UEA grades are well below predictions (he is doing a Btec so coursework based, hopefully less room for shocks on results day). He is very happy that he has a full house, does wonders for his self esteem.
