Here we go!

OP posts:

Thank you. How long until you usually hear something? She got the "thanks for your application" emails yesterday and is hearing of her friends getting a place at some places already, even from just yesterday.

Laniakea · 07/12/2018 12:50

it just depends Charlie - dd got one within 24 hours & two more within a couple of days. She's still waiting for the last two now (both at Southampton), a month later. Some places are notoriously slow generally but it also depends on the subject.

DD has a friend who got an offer from Southampton (ecology/conservation I think) very quickly but all the others who applied there are still waiting - 7 weeks for some (their website says 2-6 [eyeroll] ). It's taking 2+ weeks to get the offer after interview too.

DD's booked an offer holder day in Cardiff for February, I'm encouraged that that means she's considering going there! The other two are non starters.

Piggywaspushed · 07/12/2018 12:54

Yes, true that English unis are worse just as bad about recognising Scottish qualifications

I still ahev flashbacks about how appallingly I was spoken to and treated by an Oxford interviewer who sneered at me, essentailly and tole me he couldn't be expected to undersatnd Scottish qualification so told me to explain what they emant, in terms of A Levels (which , of course, I ahd no experience of!) I politley began to explain and he cut me off , saying' yes, well, that's quite enough of that' and yawned.

Fuckwit.

Piggywaspushed · 07/12/2018 12:54

Hahaha, Typos reflect rage!

Laniakea · 07/12/2018 12:59

the Cardiff vs Southampton thing is marine geography versus oceanography.

Both are MSci, both accredited by the same organisation, the modules are very similar - Soton has more physics & Cardiff does GIS. But Cardiff has a year abroad while Soton is heavier in physical sciences & maths. DD is worried that the Cardiff course might not be considered 'proper' science - it is such a specialised area that I have no idea how to advise her (school are clueless) & she's obviously not going to get an unbiased opinion from the departments themselves.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/12/2018 13:52

Monkey2001 thanks for prompting me. I was brought up never to make a fuss so I find it difficult being assertive in some situations, with teachers particularly! I've emailed school now so let's see if that gives them a kick up the proverbial....I now understand why the school was so laid back about students having until the deadline to apply (it clearly suits their rather lackadaisical approach!)...

CharlieandHannah if you read through the thread you will see that some DC are hearing back really quickly (within a matter of days)...Think it depends on predicted grades, course(s) applied for and some traditionally seem to be slower in giving offers than others (seem to have picked up that Durham is one such university?).

howabout · 07/12/2018 14:13

piggy one of my professors from my time at Glasgow is still down as a Professor at Oxford - he must be quite old (as am I) so not sure how much student contact he has. He would probably offer you a place on the spot if you called someone as you describe a fuckwit to their face. Literally ROFL imagining it.

ifonly4 · 07/12/2018 14:15

Charlie, it's a case of how long is a piece of string. Some get offers within 24 hours, others can be waiting months. My friend's son put his application in on 22 Oct and has four offers. DD's went in on 31 Oct and had her first offer 11 days later, but hasn't heard anything since. We now know one will be around Christmas and St Andrews likely to be Feb/Mar as they don't look at applications until after the deadline for many. It all depends on course, number of applicants and uni.

CharlieandHannah · 07/12/2018 14:22

Oh okay sorry. Thank you. She is just very on edge atm and thought I'd ask

Laniakea · 07/12/2018 14:49

hopefully something will come through quickly - waiting is horrible!

Piggywaspushed · 07/12/2018 15:33

Do you know what how, if I could time travel , I would. And that may have been what he was trying to provoke. But, being a (only just ) 17 year old, I allowed the earth to swallow me whole instead.

madmum5811 · 07/12/2018 18:08

Had a reply from Nottingham Trent, conditional offer, no wish to see his portfolio. DS is a bit disappointed.

LoniceraJaponica · 07/12/2018 18:10

Are the conditions achievable madmum?

madmum5811 · 07/12/2018 18:13

Should say it was via UCAS.

madmum5811 · 07/12/2018 18:15

Not sure really Loni. I do wish he had not picked Lincoln or Canterbury as choices because their bar was set so low, they are so hard to get to and from from here.

Question are his UCAS choices set in stone or can he change them?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/12/2018 18:42

The deed is now done after my chivvying email but the Head of Sixth did say that he thought it unlikely that offers will be forthcoming ahead of Christmas now Xmas Hmm...I despair!

I think the choices are set in stone if five universities/courses have been applied for, unless a candidate doesn't get any offers. If he does better than expected he could always upgrade post offers day (as long as there are places - and his grades meet/exceed requirements - where he wants to go).

Laniakea · 07/12/2018 18:50

I don't think you can change now.

They can use Extra (which opens in Feb I think ?) to apply for another course if they either have no offers or decline all the offers they have. Then there's clearing & adjustment after the results come out or applying again next year.

howabout · 07/12/2018 19:12

Just checked with DD1. I stand corrected. Edinburgh actually have details of offer holder dates publicly available on their website if you want info for possible dates etc - not checked elsewhere, but again recommend making sure DC are checking their emails.

Monkey2001 · 08/12/2018 09:57

Newmodelarmy -wow, that was a quick response to the chivying! Was DS happy with the ref? Judging by experiences here, depending on the course, there could well be a chance of offers before Christmas. Maybe they were trying to manage expectations.

Nerves and grumpiness here as DS thinks about his Cambridge Medicine interview next week without actually doing anything about it. They give you the names of your interviewers so I said he should read their college pages and have a brief look at their research interests, but no, I am stupid and have no idea. Sigh!

MarchingFrogs · 08/12/2018 10:18

The What?, when? and how? of changing things via UCAS is here

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/12/2018 12:54

Don't think DS has seen his reference - should he have done? He's applied to do Geography. Certainly, having logged into 'tracking' this morning, it doesn't look as if anything will happen from 24th December until the New Year (UCAS is closed for the week). However, there's a fortnight to go until Christmas Eve so anything is possible. It's difficult not to be impatient, isn't it?

Monkey2001 · 08/12/2018 14:24

Newmodel I guess it varies between schools, but at DS's he was shown the reference before it was submitted. Your DC can call UCAS and ask them to e-mail it to him - it is a free service. I would want to know what they were saying if it was my application!

Piggywaspushed · 08/12/2018 14:56

I discovered today that Southampton lowers its offers for politics if the applicants have politics A Level. This is pretty unusual! Worth knowing!

A RG uni with BBB is pretty good stuff!

NicoAndTheNiners · 08/12/2018 16:25

@madmum5811 which course was that for? Nottingham Trent didn't want to see dds portfolio for architecture which suprised me. Also got a conditional offer.

madmum5811 · 08/12/2018 17:25

Yes Nico conditional offer for Architecture. The other colleges want scanned copies etc. to be e mailed to them, which was why we wondered.
