Now that they are back at school, working on Personal Statements, doing the final Open Day visits, I thought we could do with a new thread...

2nd last open day done today. We were looking at Surrey as a possibility if things don't go well & Ds has to go through clearing. Felt it would be good to have visited a couple of ones that should have clearing spaces rather than making a rushed decision later. However he really liked it so it may become one of his 5 choices!

Manchester Met today.. looking at that for the insurance option. It was okay.
So far we are liking Leeds and really hoping for an offer from there. DD's predicted grades have just been adjusted up so we are now looking at some options that weren't open to her before such as Nottingham.
Did someone say there was an UCAS tool that you could enter predictions into and it gives a list of courses?
Thanks 🙏

eatinglesschocolate · 13/10/2018 20:13

Think if you Google 'ucas offer converter' you might get it ? If you can get access to Unifrog that gives average grades on the course. DC will need to set up account though I think. DD's school started using it this year and it's quite useful. Don't know if you can sign up as individual or if school have to do it though.

Monkey2001 · 13/10/2018 22:48

FrameyMcframe - go to UCAS website, search courses, then set the points equivalent of DD predictions in the filter

sky111 · 13/10/2018 23:04

Loghborough uni have good reputation for sports degrees

GoldenRuby · 14/10/2018 09:59

They do @sky111 . They don't accept BTecs without an A Level though, so was t an option for my DS.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/10/2018 14:46

DD's personal statement is nearly finished now. She is just waiting to start at the hospital for her voluntary work so she can add it into her statement. She can email school with it and then take it from there.

Laniakea · 15/10/2018 15:38

dd still hasn't made any progress with her ps - she was supposedly doing it this weekend but hasn't. I just want it done, I'm fed up with talking about it now.

Piggywaspushed · 15/10/2018 16:28

my DS has drawn up a 'list of every job that exists' : not really sure what this is supposed to achieve. He doesn't want to do any of them Confused

RedHelenB · 15/10/2018 17:42

Dds application went in on Friday. Decided to put Liverpool down even though we're not going to open day until next week. Really hoping she gets some quick offer!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/10/2018 17:47

Did you manage to get DS to Oxford Brookes t'other week Piggy? Hope so...

eatinglesschocolate · 15/10/2018 18:02

Offer in!! What a relief. It's one of her favourites. Now she can just get her head down and get in with it.

Witchend · 15/10/2018 18:35

Piggy that made me laugh. Grin

My ds is 11yo and currently his idea is:
Join the RAF and get his pilot licence. Move to the Antarctic to study the wildlife while using a team of Huskies to get about and a Harrier Jump Jet to fly there and back.
While he's there he's also going to be a youtuber...

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 15/10/2018 18:40

Went to Manchester on Saturday - loved the place but not the course. So Liverpool is still the current favourite. Final visit is Cardiff on 27 then she can complete PS. Did anyone go to Cardiff for the open day in September? Dd has high hopes for Cardiff.

Piggywaspushed · 15/10/2018 18:42

We did get to Oxford Brookes... unfortunately it pissed it down which did dampen the spirits. It is a lovely place though and he did show a passing interest in Applied languages, although that seems out again now and we are back to something political/hisotrical.

He keeps saying he wants to do history but doesn't have history A level. his GCSE is a C ... partly down to bad coursework/ supervision.

I have now been tasked with drawing him up anotherlist.

Piggywaspushed · 15/10/2018 18:43

I like your DS's style witchend !

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/10/2018 19:56

Applications finally done and dusted and sent in on Thurs.

Acknowledgements from Cambridge, York and Nottingham Sat.

York conditional offer of A, A, A given. As expected.

She doesn't actually know what her predicted grades are that the sixth form college have given, but they can't be dire if York haven't turned her away.

ifonly4 · 16/10/2018 11:20

eatinglesschocolate - what a relief and congratulations to your DD. I don't suppose it was St Andrews who've made the early offer? Just asking as DD has decided to apply there and just trying to gauge how quick they come back.

Spaceman67 · 16/10/2018 12:46

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help, please?

Daughter hoping to do a fashion design course in 2019. The course she has her heart set on states 'Subject to validation, this programme will be opened for 2019 entry applications very soon'.

What does that mean?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/10/2018 12:49

Spaceman67, hi and welcome. It sounds as if the degree course is new to the university and needs proper official approval (which it's not yet got).

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/10/2018 12:52

Anyone know anything about whether costs for field trips (Geography) have to be paid for over and above annual university fees? I know that for Newcastle they're included (only because DH and DS met one of the former's friend there - who is an academic in a related discipline - confirmed this) but it's not made clear (not to me anyway) on other university websites I've looked at. That could potentially make it a very expensive course if those fees have to be found too.

glitterbiscuits · 16/10/2018 14:03

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 My DS is probably applying for geography. ( he is having a last minute wobble). On the Open Days we went to it seemed to vary. Most were free in the first year ( usually UK), then the field work abroad was subsidised in the following years. A week would cost a few hundred or the price of the flights.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/10/2018 14:29

Thanks, glitterbiscuits. I am trying to encourage DS to consider doing a course that includes spending time abroad (if he doesn't go for one that includes a year in industry.

howabout · 16/10/2018 14:48

Ifonly delurking to say St Andrews hardly ever make any offers before January. They have a policy of waiting until the deadline to give everyone the same chance - function of being a small Uni in high demand.

GoldenRuby · 16/10/2018 16:11

DS has a conditional offer for Birmingham (their standard BTec offer for the course of D* x 3) and an interview for the teacher training course at Brighton. Yippee! No room for slippage for Birmingham though if he does decide that that is the one.
