Now that they are back at school, working on Personal Statements, doing the final Open Day visits, I thought we could do with a new thread...

DD is applying for International Relations and French and was very impressed by what Exeter offers. She liked the campus and wasn't at all put off by the positively Alpine topology of the place. She was also enthused by the city, mainly the number of charity shops, and came away with a rather nice shirt from one of them.

I don't know about 'green wellies'; the young woman who showed us around one of the halls of residence was pretty down to earth and gave pretty short shrift to a particularly annoying Mummy in our group, who was getting worked up about the possibility of her precious DD having to share a kitchen with people who didn't share her food fads, sorry, particular dietary preferences.

I can recommend a nice Guest house near St David's stationSmile. And an Indian restaurant to avoidHmm.

Re Nottingham, my eldest spent four years there, graduating this summer in maths.

He’s not the most outgoing soul, fine with people he knows but not one to put himself out there. He was in catered halls in year one and loved it. Said the food was variable but it helped to know it was paid for and ‘there’. They got a swipe card for lunch at the food outlets on campus. His Hall always had stuff going on, like a season of 80s movies in the (cheap) halls bar. Buses from the campus into town are cheap and frequent. He had a shared study room, but didn’t see the other chap much as he was an international student with his own circle of friends, but son made friends in halls quite quickly. Freshers was busy and well run in this regard.

Years 2-4 he stated in shared houses, lots to be had within walking distance. Standard very variable and he learned to be more discerning in both house and housemates as the years passed, with year 2 being... interesting and year 4 being nice.

Course, he said the tutors were mostly good, his only moan was that in year three his contact time was very low, he had two busy days then three days of no classes. Lots of self directed stuff which is normal but fees are high. His dissertation supervisor was busy but hugely helpful and interesting/fun.

He loved his four years, for him it came to a choice between Notts and Exeter and he definitely feels he made the right choice for him. And dd has Nottingham in her top two, partly on what she’s seen but partly on getting ‘real’ answers from her brother rather than open day sales pitches.

2boys,I shall look forward to Lincoln....

That siad DS's attention span appears to be 28 minutes and he doesn't like show offs!

Anyone been to look at Sheffield or have a dc there already? Thinking of going to their open day next month as ds really only has 4 unis he wants to apply to do far (and he is not 100% about the course st one).

But it's a bit of a trek...

Several friends' dcs and one of ds friends are at Sheffield. Has a reputation of a party town.

Decorhate · 23/09/2018 09:52

He's not a party animal at all (at the moment anyway!)

MarchingFrogs Where else is your DD looking at for IR? Mine wants a campus. York and Lancaster are front runners. Exeter looks like she's love it but it's so far away. It'll probably make the list but we won't visit until offer day (if she gets one)! Being hilly won't bother her.... we're surrounded by them! Grin

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2018 10:27

We went to Open Day at Sheffield a couple of weeks ago and DS loved it, so it is now his second choice after Cambridge. It was helped by the fact that the Medicine Director of Admissions was great - witty, informative and engaging, but the whole experience was good. They are proud that it is the greenest city in the UK (number of trees/person) and the safest city (very low crime). The main accommodation is a bit of a trek from the campus (they ran buses, but probably 30 min walk), but accommodation is dotted around and private accom very cheap.

As a city it is small, but has everything including a great music scene (home of the Arctic Monkeys helped for DS). DD of a friend is there and loves it, she is now President of Rock Soc (music rather than geology) having been a bit of a loner at school. I was chatting to somebody at Leeds who said that her daughter went to Sheffield but found it a bit small, so not for everyone.

MarchingFrogs · 23/09/2018 10:50

eatinglesschocolate, DD is applying to Leeds (for the Languages, Cultures and International Relations programme), Warwick, Birmingham, Exeter and UEA.

She has also visited Kent, Bristol - which made the decision for her that she actually preferred campus to town, Reading - but not ReadingShock, KCL, LSE and Sussex. Plus a taster day at Greenwich, just because it was available, really.

LoniceraJaponica · 23/09/2018 10:51

Safest city - hollow laugh. There are more people carrying knives in Sheffield than anywhere else, even Croydon. There have been quite a few stabbings recently. We have had a couple of drive by shootings as well.

MarchingFrogs · 23/09/2018 10:57

Rock Soc (music rather than geology)

Yes, I was initially a bit confused by DS1's apparent sudden interest in things geological when he said he'd joined the one at Birmingham...

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2018 11:39

I thought Glasgow was the greenest city tbh (it means 'dear green place in Gaelic!) so Sheffield might need to fight that one out!

Sheffield is popular with students. It's a socially variable place, I am bemused that anyone would find it small. It's vast! We drove right past Meadowhall yesterday on the M1, past a sign that announced it was 13 miles to Sheffield...

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2018 11:42

Times Good University Guide out today!

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2018 12:18

Oh dear, is it neither the greenest nor the safest? Nor the most truthful, it would appear!

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2018 12:20

Although I don't think those made a difference to DS as long as it was not unsafe or lacking green spaces, which it wasn't.

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2018 12:26

You can find dubious safety stats anywhere large, I'm sure. Nottinghma has hugley popular and successful universities and yet is often named the capital of UK gun crime. I'm not sure where you could study if you wanted to be crime free?

On an Extere note, Exeter was mentioned in The ST today as the city selected by soem big company for its HQ as their criterion was the 'the most pleasnat city'. This seemed to be based on climate. Aberdeen came out as the gloomiest city, basically unable to use solar energy! Dreich and dour, as we say...

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2018 12:26

I wish one could edit one's posts for retrospectively noticed typos!!!

AtiaoftheJulii · 23/09/2018 15:30

Oh my goodness, ds's 6th form college have tomorrow as their internal deadline for early applicants. I've been saying to him that if he's not comfortable or not feeling ready, they'll just have to wait, because he needs to have it done properly. He's happily chosen all his courses and unis, and has just sent dh and me his PS. Think this is his 3rd draft - I saw the first one which was very very basic, and his tutor has seen at least one version. It's SO BAD!! Grin Just awful. May take more than a day to polish this turd, lol. I have no idea how he got good grades in his English GCSEs! The content is ok, but it's all just a stream of consciousness, and actually really hard to read. Might leave this to dh, he's a much better writer than me Grin

Monkey2001 · 23/09/2018 17:19

Atia I hope we were meant to be wryly amused! Lucky he has parental support. All our DCs are lucky enough to have tireless proof-readers. I really feel for ambitious kids who do not have parents with the ability or time to help them.

Good luck!

JennyWreny · 23/09/2018 17:27

Hi, can I join this thread? DD hoping to study maths. We seem to have been to about a dozen open days so far, hopefully coming to the end. Maybe Southampton in a couple of weeks. Her favourite so far is Bath, but she doesn't quite have the predicted grades for there. She has A (maths), A (computer science), B (further maths) and C (chemistry) and the entry requirement is AAA and they want her further maths to be A. I think York, Nottingham, Lancaster might also be on her form. She has to have her personal statement done by Wednesday for her form tutor to see. I think the college deadline for the form being completed is mid October.

AtiaoftheJulii · 23/09/2018 17:41

Monkey yes, wry amusement is pretty much it. I just want it to be good enough so admission people can easily extract the relevant information.

I'd hope his tutor wouldn't accept it as a final version, but yes, has really brought home to me how lucky he is to have good support here (he's #3 so plenty of accumulated knowledge).

Hi Jenny - one or two aspirational choices is worth a try I'm sure. That's been a lot of open days! I had to basically force ds to the 2 he went to Grin

JennyWreny · 23/09/2018 18:44

Atia We visited some London ones last year, then Exeter in May half term. The problem with visiting so many is that they all merge into one and it's tricky to remember which was which. We should have taken more photos to remind ourselves. Her college has suggested that she puts 2 choices above her predicted grades, 2 the same and 1 lower. I did see that the course that she wants at Bath was in clearing this year (before results day) - I presume that means that they didn't get enough applicants who had high enough grades to secure offers - or maybe some other obvious reason that I've overlooked. I'm sure I'm over thinking things!!!

JennyWreny · 23/09/2018 18:46

Sorry, that didn't make sense! I meant to say that the rest of the open days we've done in June/Sept.

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2018 19:07

My experience of two Open Days with DS has nearly broken me!

If I suggest any more, I might find my car up on blocks.

Decorhate · 23/09/2018 19:17

We've done 8 since this time last year. Certainly hadn't planned to do so many - ds didn't like some he had been thinking of applying to so we've had to keep going. He really wants to visit & hear the subject talks for each one, rather than do his research remotely
