DS DOES need a clothes airer in Halls, doesn't he?

Got two weeks to go! I'm being fairly relaxed about what DS takes, having carefully read what others say about the amount of loving sourced, personally hand-selected gear that gets stolen, 'borrowed' and trashed in halls- so a fair bit of stuff will be second hand- but our camping clothes airer is really too big and cumbersome, so I'm thinking about a narrow, smaller one- but he will need it, won't he? If only for wet towels!

It was one of the things my DS raised his eyebrows at last year and argued vociferously with me about including. After a few weeks he admitted that it was one of the most useful things he had packed and it saved him a fortune on tumble drying. Persevere!

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 30/08/2018 12:32

My dd is refusing to take one. She says she'll be using the dryer for everything Hmm

RowenaDedalus · 30/08/2018 12:32

He will definitely need it. And it will be in his room so he’ll keep it. Whereas all his plates and pans won’t return at the end of the year.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 30/08/2018 12:33

Uncool as this kind of thing first appears to them, some kind of folding, concertina type airer he can shove under the bed or somewhere not using it would be useful.

PUGaLUGS · 30/08/2018 12:33

DS has just graduated.

We bought a clothes airer from B&M 3 year someone ago - cost about a fiver. He used it constantly for stuff that couldn’t go in the drier.

I would say it is an essential item.

Wet towels?

Are you the one parent who's discovered how to get teens to always air a damp towel, and not leave in a heap, snuggled up to their floordrobe?
If so, kudos, and please share the secret.

I assumed going off to Uni was where some hard facts of life (eg no towel fairy) would finally penetrate.

I did buy elegantly slimline airer for first DC who went. Not used.
Cause apparently you can wash and tumble dry everything in the launderette, and if you don't leave the bunched up wet towel for too long, it doesn't grow the green stuff, DS solemnly informed me.

Don't listen to me, I'm self-employed evidently a failure at parenting.

But there are buses, and shops where they're going. Some stuff can be left for them to sort if they find a need.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/08/2018 12:36

My DD used hers constantly in halls. She was happy to do her washing but the driers:
a) were expensive

b) were rubbish/broken a lot

c) sucked up time that would be better used working ( AKA socialising!!)

DD had a small one that could easily be stored under her bed. She still uses it in her flat. A great buy.

SueDunome · 30/08/2018 12:37

He probably will need one, but don't fret if he leaves home without it. It's part of the bonding process in the hall flats for them to go to Ikea shopping together to get the things they forgot/didn't think they needed.

frenchfancy · 30/08/2018 12:39

DD1 doesn't have one, but tends to save up her washing and bring it home.

DD2 leaves on Sunday - an airer is not on the list. There is a laundrette round the corner.

They both have one of those little peg things for drying smalls after they have been hand washed in the sink.

Miljah · 30/08/2018 12:41

Thanks, all!

we are discussing these over on NAPM. The consensus is that they are essential if doing sport/dance with limited kit or have clothes where a tumble drier will ruin things.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/08/2018 12:51

DD didn't need one last year, there was a towel rail in her bathroom and she preferred to spend her money on tumble drying rather than cluttering up her room with an airer. This year she'll be in a shared house and said she might need one.

Lexilooo · 30/08/2018 13:35

I am still using the clothes airer I got for uni now. I am nearly 40!

LIZS · 30/08/2018 13:36

Definitely. Laundry driers if they work take an age and cost ££.

mintich · 30/08/2018 13:37

Yes! I bought one as driers took so long and lots of my clothes would be ruined in the dryer.

Maverick66 · 30/08/2018 13:38

If space is a problem Sainsbury's have one that extends.

catherinedevalois · 30/08/2018 13:45

The most useful item declared my three dds! Get a folding one that when opened out has a flat top. This doubles as an extra surface for books, cases, shopping etc. When folded just goes under bed. A fiver well spent! Another item that was a godsend was a tower of 4 plastic drawers for accumulated toiletries, stationery etc.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/08/2018 15:28

I'm not sure I've seen one which matches that description- could someone link to one please?

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 30/08/2018 15:48

Errol like this a ne I think. We have one that I'm going to try to get mine to take. They hold loads and don't take up much room.

Dd goes on Saturday and I didn't think about one. Feck!

catherinedevalois · 30/08/2018 15:54

This is the style I meant. Although this one is electric the cheap ones that we had aren't.

Please tell me why he can't just buy one when he gets there if he decides he needs it 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 30/08/2018 16:35

Thanks!

Some halls aren't near the sort of shops which sell home wares, and transporting a large awkward thing like an airer may not be easy by foot. It's worth checking for the whereabouts of wilko, supermarkets etc relative to where they'll be living.

Hoozz · 30/08/2018 16:43

Yes. Both of mine used them constantly. I bought slightly smaller than normal ones from Dunhelm because rooms in halls are small.

DS2 is going back into halls for his third year. It's a campus and there isn't a shop for miles, not even a supermarket let alone a homeware shop.
