The old thread seems to have filled up!

Yes bravo Eve's ds! (and to you Eve for getting him to all those interviews Wink )

Malbec - good to hear your dd is doing well. Do you think the boy next door might be interested in dd for more than her football fanship?

Horsemad · 20/02/2019 06:59

Aww Eve, Well Done to your DS. 🙂

My DS has had his results from 'the worst exam EVER' and he got 70%. He did admit it couldn't have been as bad as he thought at the time!
He's still waiting for the other results but I know how down he felt after that one, so I am very pleased it turned out ok for him.

It's his birthday this week - 20 years has gone so quickly. Shock

Malbec, I've done that, it's really hard to not cheer when your team scores and you're sat with the opposition!! 😀

Malbecfan · 20/02/2019 15:58

Lol, I'm going to have to remind her. No idea if the boy next door is more than a football buddy. I think they want to just be friends for now.

I'm jealous of the football match though. DDs were organising a trip to the Etihad to see Man City play for my birthday. I took DD1 a couple of years ago and she loved it. My cousin is a season ticket holder so he was helping her to get tickets and she booked for all 4 of us to go at Easter. However, my cousin has texted her to say that the match will be postponed if City win their FA Cup quarter final. They will get a refund but I just wanted to go and see a game. We live in Devon so it's a right flog getting there. The semi-final will be in London so probably cost a bomb and we'd struggle to get tickets. It was also the only free weekend we had over Easter....

bigTillyMint · 20/02/2019 21:24

Congrats to your DC Eve and Hotsemad.

DD is doing a unit that links art (appreciation rather than actually doing it) with her subject. She is not impressed (despite loving and doing very well at art GCSE), especially with the forthcoming trip to a gallery in London (our home town)Grin

Horsemad · 22/02/2019 18:24

Thanks bTM 🙂 It's his birthday today, that's it - the teen years are no more!! 😮

Xenia · 23/02/2019 09:06

Glad it is all going well. One of mine called yesterday - he had his friends had a good game of tennis (they can use the courts at last year's hall free ) and work seemed to be going fine too.

Needmoresleep · 23/02/2019 09:37

My mother, though 90 and with virtually no memory, is still in sheltered housing. (Though the problems are growing and I am not sure that there are many solutions left, bar a home.)

This has been going on for a decade so DHs —self-interested— suggestion was that we could support the football team nearest her. He gets to see a match every couple of weeks and I would not have to flog down the motorway on my own to see someone who would not remember nor appreciate. To many people’s great surprise the team got promoted all the way to the premiership and has stayed there. So a ‘home’ match this weekend, though DD has joined us and will nab my ticket, and then some London games coming up. We have then been to a number of away matches as DH has wanted to visit the famous grounds, giving me the chance to catchup with people on my Christmas card list. We have even persuaded DD to switch allegiance, and DS has picked up a certain credibility amongst his Latin American course mates in the US by supporting a small but interesting team, with the American students not really understanding the commonality. It’s a sunny day, so cycle along the prom, nice lunch, they can go to the match, and I will shop.

I hope Malbec’s dd’s team do well.

bigTillyMint · 23/02/2019 10:21

LOL, sounds like what my DH would do! Though he wouldnt switch allegiances, he'd just watch any match he could Grin

So NMS, your DM doesn't need any nursing care yet? That's good going!

Needmoresleep · 23/02/2019 11:00

Yes. A dilemma is approaching as his heart still lies with the northern team he has supported since he was a child, and who may be promoted. He will probably wind up sitting at the wrong end trying not to cheer. Generally football is football and he will watch anyone.

No nursing care, but a raft of problems. Her heating system is leaking, she forgets to eat if food is not given to her, she now can’t find the loo if she gets up in the night so might go out the front door instead. Plus dental, medical, chiropodist, optician and more. I feel I am sinking, though thankful that she is in a nice part of the country and that DH is, with the lure of football, happy to come with me.

Horsemad · 23/02/2019 14:37

I am currently watching DS's village team, if they win today they'll win the league. Grass roots footy but still as exciting as the big boys imo. 🙂
Shame DS isn't here to play.

Xenia · 24/02/2019 11:02

Sounds good. I just found my daughter's 2003 rent for Wills Hall £3400. Applying inflation that would be about £5200 today but intsead it is over £7000 these days. i found the same a month or two ago for my 1980s university hall and that same hall today (it is unchanged but is £3000 a year more AFTER inflation).

bigTillyMint · 24/02/2019 13:22

Horsemad, the only footy I watch is DS's team Grin semi-pro, so not bad!

RedHelenB · 24/02/2019 17:52

Hello again! I ve dipped out because I've been concentrating on dd2 so grest to carp tchaikovsky please on everyone. Was prompted to look at this thread after the shock of dd1 phoning to tell me about the dentistry ball on the way to revise at the library on a Sunday. She's got exams in March so it's good that she finally realises the value of revision!

RedHelenB · 24/02/2019 17:53

Meant to read 'great to catch up on", not sure what tchaikovsky has to do with it!

AutumnCrow · 24/02/2019 17:59

DS came home for the weekend and has just left. He has changed so much, 20 now and a lot more mature. Talking about third year focus on molecular medicine. This from a kid who used to have to wear his house keys on a lanyard round his neck to stop him losing them. 😃

Horsemad · 24/02/2019 18:20

Hahahaha, it's funny looking back to when they were younger isn't it? 🙂

@RedHelenB, is your DD2 starting uni this year?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2019 18:36

grest to carp tchaikovsky

Absolutely!Grin

Just had a nice phone chat with DD. Talking about them changing, somewhat amazed to hear she's running for a JCR position - logistics officer I think she said, which apparently means complaining to the accommodation office on behalf of the students. She doesn't think she'll get elected because her manifesto (My DD has a manifesto?ConfusedGrin) is about achievable objectives whereas the other candidate promises things which everyone would like but don't sound feasible.

This may explain, in miniature, a lot about politics...

RedHelenB · 24/02/2019 19:14

Horsemad yes. she's going to offer holder days at Durham and Liverpool next month.

readsalotgirl63 · 24/02/2019 19:16

Hi - I have been a long time lurker and occasional poster . I ( rather sadly perhaps) really enjoy this thread - it's great to hear how other dcs are doing and to know that others have similar worries/concerns.

I'm struggling to believe that dd is now almost finished her second year - term ends on March 22 and that she will then be halfway through her degree ( Scottish uni so 4 years here) .

I also remember recognise BTM from the elderly parents thread - which I used to be on. It was enormously helpful to me when my dm was beginning to fail and I am in awe of those who continue to cope with elderly parents and teenagers.

Absolutely love carping Tchaikovsky Grin

AutumnCrow · 24/02/2019 19:21

carping tchaikovsky is a superb phrase for catching up. I carped tchaikovsky with DS for hours and he showed me how to play online poker for a massive 12 cents pot Smile

Horsemad · 24/02/2019 19:30

Lol at carping tchaikovsky! It does have a certain ring to it 🙂

Durham would be handy RedHelenB 😉 What does she want to study?

latedecember1963 · 25/02/2019 17:11

Hello everyone, DH and I had a few days in London last week so I'm also carping Tchaikovsky Smile.
Good news about your son's placement, Eve and at least all your car milage was worthwhile.

RedHelenB · 25/02/2019 18:14

She's wanting to do history. You're right, Durham would be handy but I think she'll go for Liverpool as it's a bigger city .She's got an offer for Newcastle too but doesn't want to "follow" her sister. Mock results for her tomorrow, not sure I can take another real results day, I was a ball of nerves the night before although dd1 was as cool as a cucumber!

Xenia · 25/02/2019 18:20

One wanted a recording of him playing the French horn sent today which his friends wanted to see and it is in the same file as the twins aged 12 singing their grade 7 pieces, with me accompanying them at the piano, boy trebles singing Handel at their then best. I ended up listening to loads of it.

So different now with lower voices, beards etc.

AutumnCrow · 25/02/2019 19:09

My son has metamorphosed from Fotherington-Thomas into Richard Osman with stubble.
