Medicine 2019

Hi,

Does anyone here have a DC applying for medicine to start in 2019? It would be nice to meet others as we embark on uni visits, predicted grades, UKCAT etc

We’re in Kent, d is planning to visit kings, UCL, Nottingham, Sheffield and Newcastle at the moment. She really wanted to go look at Belfast but they want three A’s plus an A at AS level but won’t accept her additional qualification in place of this (despite it having a higher UCAS tarriff). We went to an open afternoon at BSMS which she liked more than she thought she would, so is pondering the BMAT.

I have two older kids (well, adults now), one of whom has just finished his masters, the other just completed his first year elsewhere, but medical applications are just so complicated in comparison to their experiences at this stage.

Hope to hear from others in the same boat :-)

Really pleased for your DCs @Tinkobell and @Hoodiemum, well done to them! Thanks all for encouragement, but I think today might be the last day of Sheffield offers as last year seemed to be done over 3-4 days. I think it may be no bad thing to have an enforced gap year to grow up a bit. It would also give him another chance at Cambridge, hopefully with a better prepared approach.

All 3 decisions he is waiting for (Sheffield, Newcastle, Leeds) will be in by the end of Feb.

Tinkobell · 15/02/2019 11:32

@Monkey2001....no news isn't actually bad news. Sit tight, get the wine in tonight and have faith it'll work out.

hoodiemum · 15/02/2019 11:40

I do think you're writing him off too soon, Monkey. Keep the faith! But I agree wholeheartedly that gap years are a marvellous thing. Experience of real daily grind adult workplace, plus all the resilience-building and encounters with diverse people on your travels. Plus having a little of your own hard-earned money in the bank before you start uni. My oldest (non-medic) DD reports the only downside is feeling a bit too 'grown up' hanging out with all the other freshers, but with medicine, so many will be post gap year and even post biomed degrees that that won't be the same issue.

ProfessorLayton1 · 15/02/2019 17:10

Dd has UCL offer, she is really happy and we are really pleased for her.

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2019 17:27

Great news ProfLayton, glad to hear she is no longer the only one of her friendship group without an offer!

HostessTrolley · 15/02/2019 18:09

Well done 😎

medicmom · 15/02/2019 18:26

Thanks everyone for the wishes.

@Monkey2001 - Ds didn't get a Leeds Interview . Last few weeks were very trying times in our household with Manchester rejection as well.
We have asked for a feedback from Leeds.
Well done to junior prof and ladsmum.

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2019 19:34

People with the Newcastle reduced offer, have you seen the comment by "PQ", TSR UCAS expert? Apparently giving a non-UCAS deadline is bad practice and probably can't be enforced, so anybody with an "exceptional" offer should be able to get the AAB conditions as long as they firm within the UCAS normal deadlines.

Nightowlpossibly · 15/02/2019 21:50

Congratulations to professors DD well done!

Congrats also to ladsmums DS that is great news especially after getting rejections. He must be really happy, and his confidence restored. 😀

Weaverspin · 15/02/2019 22:31

monkey2001 Yes, we saw this. My DD had contacted them and thanked them for the offer, but said she couldn't comply with their timescale because it would mean her having to make a choice before hearing back from all her unis. And UCAS doesn't allow you to firm your place until you've got all the responses back (or something like that, anyway - she's much more switched on to the nuances than I am!).

They never replied to her, but then she got a general message today saying they retracted the 4-week restriction, and as long as you put them first, the AAB stands.

Weaverspin · 15/02/2019 22:32

*them = Newcastle

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2019 23:05

Interesting. I wonder if this year was a one-off or they will continue to offer the strongest candidates reduced grades. Could have an implication for number of applicants in future as quite a few applicants have a weaker subject; usually chemistry.

hoodiemum · 16/02/2019 07:51

Did the offer allow chemistry to be the B, though? For a Bristol contextual offer, their website says you can get ABB or AAC, but you still need an A in chemistry Sad.

Weaverspin · 16/02/2019 09:35

It doesn't specify which subjects have to be A.

Monkey2001 · 16/02/2019 11:27

Newcastle does not require Chemistry - A levels must include Chemistry or Biology, so they cannot specify.

Tinkobell · 16/02/2019 13:50

Many congratulations to your DD @proflayton....glad she's got one in the bank. 😊

CrunchingNumber · 17/02/2019 09:03

Congratulations to your DD Proflayton that's amazing news.

ProfessorLayton1 · 17/02/2019 11:27

Thanks all..
Hope there is more good news in the following weeks

ProfessorLayton1 · 17/02/2019 11:27

For all the DCs waiting to hear

alreadytaken · 17/02/2019 13:11

congratulations to those with offers. Another reminder to those still waiting that offers can be made for months yet. Offers are sometimes made after results in August to those with good grades who ring around.

Monkey2001 · 18/02/2019 23:26

No news today? At least DS did not get a birthday rejection!

HostessTrolley · 19/02/2019 00:40

I was do hoping he’d get a birthday offer @monkey2001

HostessTrolley · 19/02/2019 00:40

So hoping - sorry x

Tinkobell · 19/02/2019 08:44

Hi! How's everyone enjoying half term? Do most DC's have mocks? We don't as DD did AS levels and school don't do both .....but family have all gone done like dominoes with a vile 24 hr bug 🤢....where's a doctor when you need them?!

Monkey2001 · 19/02/2019 08:57

Thanks @HostessTrolley, he was able to forget it all last night. Friends came back after a legal pub drink and they were singing, dancing and being carefree teenagers until after 2:30 (he was adamant he did not want a party)!

Revision for mocks next week starts tomorrow?.....
