Medicine 2019

Hi,

Does anyone here have a DC applying for medicine to start in 2019? It would be nice to meet others as we embark on uni visits, predicted grades, UKCAT etc

We’re in Kent, d is planning to visit kings, UCL, Nottingham, Sheffield and Newcastle at the moment. She really wanted to go look at Belfast but they want three A’s plus an A at AS level but won’t accept her additional qualification in place of this (despite it having a higher UCAS tarriff). We went to an open afternoon at BSMS which she liked more than she thought she would, so is pondering the BMAT.

I have two older kids (well, adults now), one of whom has just finished his masters, the other just completed his first year elsewhere, but medical applications are just so complicated in comparison to their experiences at this stage.

Hope to hear from others in the same boat :-)

CrunchingNumber, with regard to when to confirm, there is a post slightly upthread taking about the Nottingham Foundation and the Lincoln offers having a four week acceptance criteria attached (I'm assuming it means they've said that the choice must be firmed within four weeks as per the earlier post re Newcastle)...however, my DD has a Lincoln offer and there was no obvious time limit on it. I've messaged her to check!

MarchingFrogs · 06/02/2019 16:39

Leaving out any extra conditions re responding (the medical schools' version of the terrible 'unconditional if firmed', but with time pressure?) that individual universities may impose, the UCAS relevant dates are here:
www.ucas.com/ucas/events/find/type/key-date?keywords=

e.g. if all your universities have responded by March 31st, you must make your decision by May 1st or all your offers will be withdrawn; if by May 2nd, you have until June 6th, etc. (Don't get sidetracked by the dayes marked 'Conservatoires', only the 'Undergraduate' ones are relevant).

You have to have have received all your offers / rejections (or to have withdrawn from any you haven't heard from but no longer wish to pursue) in order to enter your Firm and Insurance into Track.

WellIDontKnow · 06/02/2019 19:12

DD has checked and there is no extra time limit imposed for her Lincoln offer.

Monkey2001 · 06/02/2019 22:23

CrunchingNumber, we have not got direct experience, but my understanding is that you can't firm and insure whilst waiting for results.

If you have offers you want to firm and insure, you have to withdraw from any pending applications. At some universities that means you can then get in early on accommodation choices, so worth doing if DC has made their decision.

Otherwise you wait until all the decisions are in and there is a final date in May (I think).

Offer from Nottingham in. Dead surprised! Thought she'd completely fluffed 2 stations, but there you go. Nice to hear your DD's happy yr1 experience there @Mumsneedwine.

mumsneedwine · 07/02/2019 12:31

Well done mini Tinkobell. DD v happy there and it's a lovely campus. If yours wants to know anything I can ask DD - if she goes there mine could be yours parent !!!

CrunchingNumber · 07/02/2019 12:37

Well done Mini Tinkobell, Thank you all , now have a fair idea how the system work

Nightowlpossibly · 07/02/2019 17:13

Tinkobell- Many congratulations to your DD! Great news.

Monkey2001 · 07/02/2019 22:24

Great news , well done Tinkobell Junior! Hope the others waiting for Nottingham are also getting the right answer.

Weaverspin · 07/02/2019 22:39

Congrats to Tinkobell Junior!
Offer from Nottingham here too :) Thrilled, because it was DD's favourite.

Tinkobell · 08/02/2019 07:09

Thanks for warm thanks and to @Weaverspin....super that it's her favourite, she much be dead chuffed. DD is pleased but a bit meh as it's not Sheffield which is the one she really wants. Very best of luck to all......!

HostessTrolley · 08/02/2019 09:51

Congratulations @tinkobell and @weaverspin juniors!

Dd hasn’t heard from Nottingham but is completely not stressed about it - as much as she loved Nottingham, on balance she’d prefer to be in London and has the imperial offer. She said now she has an offer the most important thing is to get the grades. She’s a bit shocked by the high quality applicants at her school who have got very fast offers from other unis being put on hold by imperial, I said it just goes to show that different unis are looking for different things.

Nightowlpossibly · 08/02/2019 11:16

Weaverspin - congrats to your DD on her offer, and from her favourite too. She must be very happy right now.

Monkey2001 · 08/02/2019 11:31

Congratulations Weaverspin, that takes the pressure off the Newcastle early firming decision!

mimiasovitch · 08/02/2019 18:27

Well done to those with offers. We're still waiting here. All nail biting and angst😁. As everyone has said they only need one offer, but at this stage I'm sure dd isn't convinced any will be forthcoming.

ProfessorLayton1 · 08/02/2019 19:15

Well done and congratulations to all the DCs who have had offer..

Monkey2001 · 08/02/2019 20:54

Yes, mimiasovitch, same here. Although we do see a golden lining to getting no offers as it would make the decision about whether to have another go at getting into Cambridge!

Sheffield has given an update - offers to home students will start coming out next week - www.sheffield.ac.uk/medicine/prospective_ug/applying/whathappens I think Sheffield has the most applicants on this thread of all the med schools, so should be a news-filled week ahead.

Needmoresleep · 08/02/2019 21:50

DD had her first interview in March. Not untypical and horrid at the time, but now long forgotten.

Good luck...and patience!

Weaverspin · 10/02/2019 17:42

monkey2001 - yes, waiting keenly to hear from Sheffield! It was her first interview, and seems like so long ago! Do you know what order they're sending out results?

Monkey2001 · 11/02/2019 07:55

@Weaverspin other than saying that internationals and A101 are first, I have not seen anything specific about order, but I assume it is random. I thnk that last year offers came out over 3 or 4 days and the "processing" takes a few days so I am guessing Internatonals/A101 may come tomorrow and home students start in he second half of the week.

Decisions come through UCAS Track.

HostessTrolley · 11/02/2019 08:14

My d said that at school they’re told that track updates just after 6pm so there’s no point checking it during the day if the uni you’re waiting to hear from sends out their offers that way x

4catsham · 11/02/2019 09:23

Great news Weaverspin and Tinkobell and fingers crossed for those of you awaiting news from Sheffield.I noticed on TSR Liverpool thread that some of the applicants have had emails encouragung them to apply tor accommodation although no offers of a place at Med School have been sent yet. It all seems a bit strange, people applying for accommodation before they even get an offer, Checked with my Dd she hasnt heard anything since interview last week. Now interviews are over she s struggling with the mundanity of getting on with her school work and getting those grades. These last few months feel like they are going to be tough going ..the reality of it all sets in after the roller coaster ride of interviews. Just wondering about and hoping for that 1 offer...

Dreamgirl1000 · 11/02/2019 13:07

One question regarding the WE and UKAS application.
Does My DD need to attach references from her WE like a letter from her sponsor or her volunteering supervisor? She will be applying in October.

Needmoresleep · 11/02/2019 13:53

Dreamgirl, I think that depends on Medschool. DD had to fill out something extra for Bristol, but their recruitment has changed since.

Monkey2001 · 11/02/2019 14:01

Dreamgirl you definitely don't attach them to the UCAS application. Different med schools have different approaches on what they want to see - Leeds wanted all exam certificates and last year asked for proof of volunteering and WE but only after offers. DS's others (Newcastle, Sheffield, Cambridge) did not seem to want anything.

A course we attended about applying advised people to create a file with all the evidence supporting your PS so that if anybody wants it, you have it easily to hand and you are not trying to get a hospital to confirm WE months after it happened.
