Anyone else got DCs going through finals ?

BasiliskStare · 27/05/2018 21:04

I think I am more nervous about DC's than I was with mine.
Oh well fingers crossed for all DCs doing this this year.

Mixed bag so far with DS - But , I mean how bad can it be ? The sky will not fall in .

Oh hello Goodbye - might have to look that one up. What I have done ( given I seem to be the one mum who has sent nothing ) have sent Ds a gift card / token thing for the whisky shop on turl street. He likes a little nip of single malt every so often. ( but he is 21 going on 22 so allowed) & also not card arriving for a few days yet. Right, off to google and Ds may be getting similar chocolates to your DCs Grin

Fenton is fabulous - my little one when he slipped his collar and went after the fox - well just thank goodness there was no-one nearby with a camera. I would not have been portrayed in my best light.

Blush Ds has chocolate fish and chips en route. Thank you Goodbye

The fish and chips are seriously good Basilisk! I'm trying very hard (and failing) not to think about DS about to go into the exam hall for this particularly bad exam. He has the last embers of a medium sized selection box to help him on his way.

Completely disregarding the buggering off on the beach and up the cliff which is a regular occurrence, my dogs also slip out of the gate at the slightest whiff of human error in not closing it. The most recent occasion saw them sighted at the village church and then (around half an hour later) down at the pub (the latter is a frequent haunt but seeking out God was a new one). The pub is very good at bringing them home for me (usually extremely well fed on gastro food).

Very good luck to all DCs doing exams today.

Finals all finished for us! DC is back home and interviewing for internships. If he doesn't get what he wants, he has a Masters lined up for next year, but he is very young for year and we think that a year at home, going to work but with few domestic responsibilities, might re-civilise him. His upbringing seems all undone after 3 years of student life...

BasiliskStare · 29/05/2018 14:23

Oh well done user ! Good luck to him. with internships et al.

So in further news from Lake Basilisk - Ds is up again at 2.30 this afternoon.

This morning's displacement activity was keeping the dogs in the bedroom whilst painters with ladders were propping the front door open ( small terraced house - no side access) otherwise aforementioned Little Dog would have been down the road before you could have said "Reynard"

I wonder Goodbye if your dog made for the church to claim sanctuary. A friend of mine who had two Jack Russells , if one went missing she just went round to the local takeaway and invariably she would find the dog rooting through the bins.

Needmore Dh manages to send stuff to nieces in Japan - not sure if he has a special Amazon account - or knowing him - he probably just sends vouchers. I do know his brother has had to talk him through the Japanese language Amazon website. ( DH has many talents but speaking Japanese is not one of them ! )

Good luck to all
I shall be mainly practising crossing fingers this afternoon & also mopping up workmens' massive footprint prints. I am not very particular about housework as a rule , but it will keep my mind off things Grin

We are now waiting for the outcome of the internship interviews (he had three big ones today) and the results of his finals. I’d quite like to know whether he has firm plans to be usefully occupied from September 😂

goodbyestranger · 29/05/2018 14:35

Gosh Basilisk no sooner does my DS exit the building to lick his wounds (and hopefully look at a book or two for tomorrow 9.30am) than your DS enters to start the process all over again. It's like a weather house! I'll cross my fingers too for your DS since they're locked in position from this morning anyhow.

Yes, quite possibly sanctuary since the pair of dogs have committed so many team crimes. One is a Parsons Jack Russell and the other a younger, very, very empty headed and easily led chocolate Cocker. Absolutely dead stupid - the wind whistles through one ear and out the other.

BasiliskStare · 29/05/2018 14:35

User I am spending the afternoon crossing fingers anyway so consider your son in receipt of some of that crossing Smile Good luck to him .

Thank you Basilisk

goodbyestranger · 29/05/2018 14:38

Three big ones! Impressive. Especially managing the timing and logistics all on one day. Good luck to him too!

BasiliskStare · 29/05/2018 14:58

Goodbye my friend's dogs are Parsons Jack Russells. Unfortunately the elder girl was deaf before she died ( at 17 which is a good innings) deaf - but made for more comedy moments in the park. New little dog is - shall we say - "feisty"

My hugely sage advice to DS was " just turn up at the right time and answer the right number of questions in the time allotted to you - once all exams finished you can schedule some time in your diary for worrying about results"

Anyone want to invest in my brilliant business model for advising students Grin

OP posts:
GnomeDePlume · 29/05/2018 17:18

BasiliskStare actually that is brilliant!

You could add helpful tips like 'read the question and answer it rather than the question you wish it had been'

BasiliskStare · 29/05/2018 21:14

Gnome

Care to become a business partner ?

DS does remember a tutorial in his early days where the tutor said to DS's Tutorial partner (TP) , "TP that was an absolutely brilliant essay and answer. Unfortunately , it wasn't the answer to the question I actually asked you. "

In Ds's 1st exam he saw a question about Topic A ( at which point metaphorically rubbing his hands with glee ) but on reading the rest of the question it then said - and discuss with relation to Topic B. At which point Ds said he ( metaphorically) put his head in his hands and tried to make it the question he wanted. Having realised he could at best answer 51% of the question , he moved on. He doesn't think the paper went well but I take heart that he answered The Right Number Of Questions. And he is dyslexic so owing to slowness of getting stuff down - that's a good thing. Grin

No news from DS - no surprise there - not sure if good or bad - but displacement activity - here is Little Dog - arch Fox Chaser in chief

BasiliskStare I think there is a gap in the market for basic exam technique. I didnt get proper advice on it until I was sitting professional exams.

I am now debating whether to ask DD1 when results come out. She is busy deep cleaning her flat so dont want to distract her from cleaning therapy/packing as there is 'only' a few weeks before we have to move her out.

goodbyestranger · 30/05/2018 09:22

Incredibly innocent (and lovely) little face. Are you absolutely positive this little fellow could cause any problems at all?

DS up again in eight minutes. Fingers tightly crossed, again.

BasiliskStare · 30/05/2018 19:32

Goodbye I hope all went well for DS this morning. Very much fingers crossed. My Ds I think , last exam on Saturday. & yes Friday's he won't be looking forward to .

Re Little Dog - foxes and pigeons are his natural enemies - do not be deceived by the innocent teddy bear face. He has now decided helicopters are his natural enemy as well ( never mind that our little back garden is smaller than most balconies so a helicopter could not land. ) He still barks at them to ward them off and then goes and lies in the kitchen with a sigh , which sort of says "I've done my job"

@GnomeDePlume all best wishes to your daughter. - I do hope she does well. Basilisk x

Not such a good morning today no Basilisk but thanks for asking, but they have to soldier on and forget about it - so I said all the sensible stuff which they all know already. Not that I really ever followed my own advice I've just become a total hypocrite in dishing it out. I can't remember any of the DC sailing through Finals without at least one utterly ghastly paper, so I said that too, and meant it. And it might pale after Friday's treat after all (but I only thought that, didn't say it - unusually restrained).

Now as for Alleged Arch Fox Chaser I can see in the second photo that he might indeed have the potential to be AFC. He looks rather like a Greek Colonel I think. Quite substantial and with an aim (you clearly feed him excellently and what a pose).

My Parsons Jack Russell has a list of hate objects. In order: postmen, all visitors who are not yet known quantities, babies in prams, bicyclists, runners, helicopters, fireworks, his brother dog possessing toys.

I think your dogs and mine would have a lot to talk about if they ever met up in the pub or for dinner or even at church.

BasiliskStare · 30/05/2018 23:13

Well , when Goodbye you say we clearly feed him ( Little Dog) excellently - I assume that is code for what the vet calls Chubby. He is a scavenger. . Another comedy moment was when he found a box of discarded Krispy Kreme donuts in the park & Dh took the strategically worse line of chasing the dog rather than just picking up the box. Little Dog does not know he is a little dog. He stands four square and just faces up to things without realising he just can't do it. Pigeons , scaffolders , postmen , helicopters and people with big sports bags. Inter alia .

I hope this morning will have not have gone so badly for your son - DS - yesterday afternoon said "OK" - 1 question quite standard , answered , 2 not too bad , not brilliant but answered . 3rd question he reckons he needs a benign examiner for . So Exam 1 - not great , Exam 2 ( which he was dreading ) not as bad as he feared - and for context that means actually answering all the questions -so that's good Exam 3 - Er not sure might need a bit of luck on my side. 2 more and then done !

So thus far - answered all questions but not feeling particularly chipper.

On the up side - chocolate fish and chips have arrived , & whilst I said he should share them with the house , they appear to have been squirrelled away into his room. We shall see. DS not looking forward to Friday Grin - but then will be finished on Saturday so that's good.

Oh I do know they have to do this for themselves , but , my fault I know , I can't help vicarious nervousness.

OP posts:
GnomeDePlume · 31/05/2018 05:35

Thank you @BasiliskStare and the same to you and yours.

Well I asked the question and apparently results are due by 23rd June but DD is going to start checking from next week as that will be 2 weeks after the final final. Graduation day is 23rd July. Perhaps they could wait until the day! It would add a bit of drama and excitement to the event with graduates either cheering or sobbing on the stage!

goodbyestranger · 01/06/2018 09:16

Basilisk what an outrageously direct vet you have. He looks a fabulous dog and all to the good that there's a reasonable amount of him.

Time for joint vicarious nervousness, with fifteen minutes to go. Best of luck both DSs.

boys3 · 01/06/2018 18:46

DS1 finally got underway today, and just to add to my fun we have another DC starting A level exams on Monday. Best wishes to both all your DCs with Finals. :)

goodbyestranger · 01/06/2018 19:09

Ah very good luck to boys DS! Another History Boy I think? (have I got the right DS?(I assume you have three :))). My DS has e-mailed to say he's in the pub, having finished his final Final. He seems in incredibly jovial spirits - judging by the timing of the email he's had a few hours to drown any sorrows, and they do seem well and truly drowned :) His girlfriend made a surprise appearance (from Paris) to greet him as he came out, before he was not sprayed with things (note to proctors) by other friends also waiting to celebrate. All he said about the exam was that it was ok, he seems to have moved on rapidly Grin.
