I've been a long time lurker to this post having a much younger DD who wants to study Medicine, but haven't felt the need to comment until today for obvious reasons.
Congratulations to all your DC's who have made the grade and my heartfelt commiserations to those who didn't. I know how you feel ☹️.
I applied for Medicine in 1994, got offers from Liverpool (AAB) and The Royal London Medical School (as it was known then BBB), but stupidly put down Liverpool as my first choice.
Results day was bittersweet - A in maths, B in Chemistry but a bloomin D in Human Biology! Devastated was an under statement.
I was stubborn, decided Medicine wasn't for me, didn't retake Biology, went to Bristol to study Chemistry ( had a blast and got a great result) and am now an Accountant 🙄🙄!
Biggest mistake of my life. Every results day I pine for my missed career, wishing I had re-sat Biology. Every time I visit my GP or hospital I sit there envious of the Doctors.
I suppose what I am trying to say is don't let your kids give up on their dream if they really want to be a Doctor. Med schools do consider retakes. Make the most of a GAP year, but re-apply.
My Daughter has made her own mind up about Medicine - I have never swayed her opinions - she's far too strong minded for that! I'm looking forward to taking onboard all the advice on this forum on the near future but guess it will all be out of date when it's my time to be a worried Mum.
Congrats again to all - A levels are tough!
