DS is doing DoE this week-end, in the heat of the SE. Parents lobbied for it to be cancelled to be told that the all point of DoE is to deal with tough conditions! I think they also suspected that kids had begged their parents to cancel it so they could watch the football game :) Last time he did it, it rained hard the entire time, so quite a contract. I'm surprised that he didn't moan much at all although he did say that they might happen to get lost just as they get near a pub in a village that happens to have no telephone signal. I told him that the teachers were likely to have the same thought :)

specialted · 07/07/2018 12:12

DS back yesterday from his d of e, sporting attractive tan lines. He was surprisingly chirpy about the whole thing, but gutted to have missed the England game on Tuesday. He managed to listen to some if it on a radio apparently. DD still in Tenerife, back on Monday. Has been a quiet week in our house!

SomersetS · 09/07/2018 12:11

Must be getting closer, Leicester asking for DBS to be done!

OP posts:
Katisha · 09/07/2018 18:21

Yes DS has just done DBS for Nottingham. Although I'm slightly confused by the vaccinations - not sure whether he has to organise his own Hep B and TB immunity etc now or whether that all happens when he gets there.

mumsneedwine · 09/07/2018 19:01

I called Notts as DD is away. They said not to worry too much about vaccinations now - kids have a meeting in first few weeks and if they are missing any jabs then they'll stab them there and then. I was confused how they could show immunity to chicken pox but she said they'd sort that out to. They were v lovely

SomersetS · 09/07/2018 20:23

Leicester not asking about jabs yet as far as I know.
Finally applied for Student Loan too.
Anything I've forgotten ladies?

Thanks mumsneediwne - I'll try and get him to call them before we arrange anything ourselves - it's not crystal clear what they want you to do from the email...

Movingmountains · 09/07/2018 20:44

We’ve not heard anything from Sheffield about health stuff. Just the DBS form

2B1Gmum · 11/07/2018 14:54

Not expecting to hear because of gap year, but we did discover she needs some sort of statement for eye sight issues. My mother knows someone in her village who got an offer on waiting list for UEA and is thrilled, will be a potential useful source of info for DD and any other UEA potentials. Fingers crossed at all times.

watfordmummy · 14/07/2018 15:50

St Andrews medical forms (completed and sent back) and link for DBS sent out.

Also a list of books and equipment, but we can't bring ourselves to open that one. Will wait until after 16 Smile

SomersetS · 14/07/2018 21:30

Watfordmummy interested to hear what books in the list. Leicester offer letter said lab coat & stethoscope required.

OP posts:
watfordmummy · 15/07/2018 16:50

Yes I know lab coat and stethoscope, call me/us superstitious but can't bring self to look any further.Grin

Minikew · 15/07/2018 18:44

It's all so real now ! 🤞 for everyone for 16 August.

muddlethro · 16/07/2018 17:39

Mumsneedwine, I am so sorry to hear about your dad, that is such sad news, for him, and for you all. I hope that over the weeks and months he will get the very best care that the NHS has to offer.... 💕

muddlethro · 16/07/2018 17:57

Watfordmummy, I’m so excited to hear that your DS has chosen St Andrews 😀. I can relate to holding off buying the stethoscope (although did regret leaving this purchase till later, as it cost more and we couldn’t get it engraved by the supplier!). Several months before my DS sat his A levels, my daughter (at St A’s) had bought my DS a University of St Andrews sweatshirt with the intention of giving it to him on results day, she was that confident he’d get the grades! I couldn’t bear to look at it and had convinced myself she’d likely wasted her money....oh me of little faith!!! 😝

alreadytaken · 16/07/2018 21:01

There are sometimes stethoscope offers arranged by student societies - and some lucky students may even be provided with one by their medical school. Check before you buy but if you do buy dont go over the top. More may be expected of the student with the fancy stethoscope Smile

For students with glasses/ a lot of medical needs now is the time to get your free prescriptions form but dont fill it in until paying for accommodation. If they have savings that will rule them out of low income exemption from charges than arrange sight tests/ new glasses/ dental care now. www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/nhs-low-income-scheme

watfordmummy · 17/07/2018 17:12

@muddlethro thank you, had the chance to book a celebration lunch for next month and can't bring myself to do it.

Gosh didn't even know you got them engraved!! (Stethoscopes!)

DS wears glasses but would he be able to claim for them free as we are above any threshold as a family?

SomersetS · 17/07/2018 17:13

Good shout remember prescriptions. I have a form ready.

Dentist they can come until 19 if in education so squash one in on the holiday nearest their birthday. I have!

Gosh, want the stethoscope engraved. Should I tempt fate? It's like babies & cribs/ peaks all over again.

OP posts:
SomersetS · 17/07/2018 17:15

Any experienced Mums - what stethoscope should we look at? Say the "John Lewis" of standard stethoscopes??

OP posts:
muddlethro · 17/07/2018 17:35

Watfordmummy, I totally get why you’re holding off booking that celebratory lunch, it’s an incredibly nerve wracking time, the waiting! With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I’d taken the leap of faith and bought the stethoscope when they were in the sale! But because my DS had come out of his Physics paper (paper 1, I think it was) saying, with emphasis, “that was horrendous “...I somewhat pessimistically thought, “oh well, that’s a D then...!”
And yes, the stethoscopes can be engraved, which I’d definitely recommend... 👍.
Not sure re the glasses, especially if you’re over the financial threshold, but might be worth checking out the link that alreadytaken has posted above...🤗
What accommodation has your DS applied for...🤔

Decorhate · 17/07/2018 18:25

SomersetS I think Littman is the most popular brand. Depending on how much clinical contact there is in first year it might be worth holding off till Christmas or the next Birthday - there may be a particular model which is recommended which might not be revealed till they are there

muddlethro · 17/07/2018 18:32

Re stethoscopes, St A’s recommended the Littmann Classic ll, but when we got around to ordering, this had been discontinued and replaced by the Littmann Classic lll (cost £84)! We were told that the main difference between the ll & the lll is the chest piece, something to do with the lll having an adult side and a paediatric rim on the reverse, whereas the ll is single sided....🤔.

Woodenhillmum · 17/07/2018 18:54

Littman classic lll was the one BSMS recommended
