Continuing the previous thread.

Exams, assessments, essays, etc.

Support, or lack of it.

Will they all get accommodation for next year and can they cook a balanced meal yet.

DD was planning to stay in Bristol and do bar work in a club with a friend, but I think she has been persuaded to come back to do some nannying for the family she worked with last summer. But she is going on holiday with friends first and then with us hopefully.i bet it will go by in a flash!

Students need to do internships during the summer holidays. It's crucial to build their CVs. These days, everyone has a degree - it's the work experience and the professional skill build up that makes them stand out when real life hits (which is very soon).

ErrolTheDragon · 26/05/2018 18:31

It's actually a requirement of DD's course that they do some sort of appropriate internship - I think it's a minimum of 8 weeks before the start of the 3rd year. I do wish hers wasn't 12 weeks on the far side of the country though. She's going straight there after the end of term. DH will go and help her move her stuff and bring home what she doesn't want; there probably wouldn't be room for me in the car too so not sure when I'll get to see her, though.

simbobs · 26/05/2018 21:21

That's tough Errol. The same happened when DD went up. I never did see where she has been living. DH will pick her up as he will be in the area for work. I hope she is ok as right in the middle of exams. She is home for a bit and then off to summer school for a month to help her get ahead for 2nd year. Her choice, not mine.

MorvahRising · 27/05/2018 09:02

Errol Sad

DS has a six week internship but he can live at home. I have missed our evening card games and shared jokes; we have an almost identical sense of humour which is very different from DH’s! I do think though that the independence of living away from home for a year will mean a few clashes when he’s back under the parental roof . . . . I can see Wine consumption increasing.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/05/2018 09:24

I'm not sad about it, exactly, because it should be a good opportunity for her - just wish it was 8 weeks and that it was day trip distance.

The good thing is, hopefully this will mean she can have a more relaxed summer next year before the tough 3rd year. One of the other options she was investigating was some (probably unpaid) work at the nearest good uni, she might be able to do that for a reasonable time based at home.

Eve · 27/05/2018 21:16

Has anyone else not finished yet, DS has another 3 weeks to go - exams start next Thurs.

Seems very late.

Had very cross phone call from him - his individual assignment 82% , the group one 50% as group he was in didn’t make a lot of effort!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 27/05/2018 22:12

DD has two more exams and finishes mid-June. Enjoying the Big Weekend in Swansea this weekend - pleased for them that the sun has been shining
Am looking forward to my few days there when it's pick up time.

Haffdonga · 27/05/2018 22:21

DS starts and finishes exams next week but I'm not sure when I get the privilege of picking up his manky belongings as he's got plans to spend a few days after exams with friends in one of their parents' holiday homes. Lucky them. Not so lucky parent home owners

ErrolTheDragon · 27/05/2018 22:39

I don't think DDs exams start till the week after next.

extinctspecies · 28/05/2018 08:44

DS came home for the summer yesterday.

He has a week's holiday booked with friends end-August, & is coming on the family holiday (we have a house abroad), about 10 days in July.

No internship - don't think he even applied for any. Says he is 'too tired' to think about getting a job now but might get one after we get back from holiday.

This is making me very anxious! I don't want him hanging around the house all day then staying up half the night playing Fortnite - I work from home. He needs to earn money, be independent! He has to pay for his Uni accommodation over the summer so could also work there (big city) if he wanted to.

How can I motivate him?!

And he also tucked into raw carrots & lettuce last night enthusiastically saying he ran out of veg at uni 2 weeks' ago.

Stopyourhavering64 · 28/05/2018 08:55

Ds is home!....put his stuff in storage for the summer, before heading 350 miles home .
He's got a job starting this week thankfully, so no lounging about as I'd once feared . No plans for a holiday yet, but early days as many of his friends not yet home to discuss ideas
Will get exam results next week!
Can't believe that's first year finished remembering back to this time last year
Shock

simbobs · 28/05/2018 08:56

Mine finishes in about 10 days. I hadn't realised that any had finished so early. I haven't seen any other DC around our way.

Horsemad · 28/05/2018 09:01

DS has exams this week & next. His contract on his halls runs to mid July but he hasn't mentioned when he's coming home.

He has said he'll look for a job for the summer.

LooseHipsWobbleShips · 28/05/2018 09:02

Interesting to read about the varied timetables of DC and that some are home already! DS hasn't started exams yet.

extinctspecies · 28/05/2018 09:40

Those of you whose DC have already sorted out summer jobs, can I ask what they are doing (roughly) as it might inspire DS?

bigTillyMint · 28/05/2018 09:43

DD finished exams/course on Fri but is staying for a bit. I'm actually on my way to visit herSmile

Stopyourhavering64 · 28/05/2018 09:49

Ds got a job in a naice supermarket which is never knowingly undersold Grin
I'd set up online alerts for jobs and as soon as I got one I naggedtold him to apply, otherwise he'd have 'forgotten'
He's working a minimum of 16 hrs/week with potential for lots of overtime during the summer
He'd also handed in an application to a local pub/ restaurant but not heard back from them

bigTillyMint · 28/05/2018 10:13

Ooh that sounds good - he might get a staff discount ' my DGodD did WinkSmile

HSMMaCM · 28/05/2018 10:42

Eve - DD hates the group work for that very reason. She's used to it from doing dance and drama at sixth form though.

She finished last week, but one of her friends is in college right up to near the end of July.

No summer job yet ...

PilarTernera · 28/05/2018 13:30

DD has another couple of weeks of exams. DP and I will go collect her and her (mountains of) stuff in 3 weeks.

She is planning on doing casual work for a catering company, serving at parties and events. She may also get a bit more work at a small business near here. Nothing related to her degree subject.

ono40 · 28/05/2018 16:50

DS is home for a few days. DH picked him up yesterday, luckily before all that flooding. Just hope his house for next year hasn't flooded (he showed me some videos online of people in dinghies in Selly Oak).

He came home wearing a thermal vest - literally the only piece of clean clothing left - so the washing machine has been on full time. Good job it is warm and sunny today.

He has booked his flights to China where he will be spending 6 weeks and he starts his job next Monday to earn some money to enable him to travel. No staff discount - it is at a camp for inner city kids and he gets to clean the toilets and tents every day. Definitely character forming!

MountainPeakGeek · 28/05/2018 19:40

DS finished in late April! He got his exam results a week later and has done really well.

He's now working full time at a local bakery/cafe and I'm turning into a complete blob from all the goodies he's bringing home. Everything they make is only sold on the same day, so he is allowed to grab anything that's left at the end of the day.

I'm assured that this is a temporary situation and once tourists pick up in numbers they are more likely to run out of stuff than have surplus...which is just as well, since I have no willpower!! Grin

www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being

One of the psychology profs at Bristol Uni has just posted this course link on his Twitter with the comment
Just binge-watched the fantastic online Yale course on the science of well-being from @lauriesantos - www.coursera.org/ - it's brilliant & something that should be mandatory for students as an antidote to current epidemic of student misery

brizzledrizzle · 28/05/2018 22:57

Mine doesn't have time for a job - she's off travelling and so on so will only be home for about 6 weeks. She worked all through her GCSEs and A levels to get a nest egg so she deserves a break now I think.
