DS’s Rental for next year was through a uni recommended agent and was also on rightmove. Am assuming all paperwork and certificates are In place. DS did tell me that his room has a “big window like yours that opens so I can jump out “! So at least he was looking at fire safety.

In other news he’s had his first short film marked and was graded a 2:1 which he’s very chuffed about.

bigTillyMint · 30/11/2017 07:40

Well done AuntP's DS!

Liney, is your DD doing an art-type subject? Poor you - sounds horrid.

NMS, thanks, that is v useful - have sent your advice to DD.

15 sleeps till DD comes home!

extinctspecies · 30/11/2017 07:50

I'm another one counting the days until DS gets home. 8 more days to go for us (if he decides not to go to a football match ...)!

HSMMaCM · 30/11/2017 08:32

DD has asked us to take a suitcase next week and then when we pick her up the following week, we are bringing one of her housemates back with us, to drop her at a local station.

She has started sending web links for things she might like for Christmas.

RedHelenB · 30/11/2017 12:32

D.C. the same Horsemad . We 're trimming up so I need to get all the housework done before Saturday!

ono40 · 30/11/2017 14:43

9/10 sleeps until DS is home (depending on whether he goes to various end of term shindigs). We are going to drive up to Birmingham to fetch him and all his stuff and combine this with a trip to the German Christmas market.

Anyone got any bright ideas for Christmas student gifts? DS is getting some skiwear as he is off skiing with his gf on Boxing Day but otherwise I am stumped.

NMS I checked that DS' house for next year is registered as a HMO (it is) so thanks for that. Birmingham City Council list all registered properties on a spreadsheet viewable by the public.

BestIsWest · 30/11/2017 14:55

DS (and DD, working away) were home at the weekend for DM’s 80th birthday party. They insisted on putting the Christmas tree up on Sunday. I’ve never put the tree up in November in all my life.

DS will next be home around the 14th, can’t wait.

Needmoresleep · 30/11/2017 16:18

Ono, We got DD some noise cancelling headphones as an early Christmas present. Useful presumably should a DC's exam timetable finishes after those of neighbours. Her GPs will buy a stethoscope.

We are also paying for her University ski trip. She has been really good at living within her budget, despite the fact the term has been really long, she has needed to pay for sports kit and subscriptions and buy expensive text books. Essentially she has stayed away from taxis, take aways and cappuccinos, done lots of cooking from scratch, and even prepared packed lunches. She gets this in lieu of bail-outs!

Glad to hear that the HMO information is so easily accessible. It covers gas and electric certs, alarms, etc but also I think you need to get some sort of report from fire authorities. The advantage is if you hit h&s problems and the landlord is unresponsive, you can go to the Council.

As a parent I would also double check that there is a carbon monoxide alarm. If not you can buy one for about £30.00 and simply leave it on top of a unit a couple of meters from the boiler.

I would also download advice about preventing condensation. It is a real problem in many properties, especially modern ones. Landlords will expect tenants to do what they can to minimise any problems, as it is really hard to do much to a property. Leave bathroom doors open if you are not using them (especially if seven people have showered one after another!) and, if safe, the window slightly ajar. Make sure there is no water left standing on the floor and use a bathmat and hang it is to dry. (Bathmat = Christmas present?) Open bedroom windows and air rooms. For some reason boys seem to be the worst. Damp from breath can condense on cold walls and cause a damp patch in a corner. Dry clothes in as large a room as possible and make sure the room is aired. And so on.

Next years house finding was causing real stress. The two girls DD is closest to in her flat will be sharing with course-mates, and the rest are finding somewhere together, leaving her alone. This was only a couple of days ago, but by telling others that she was along has already yielded dividends, with a couple of girls she knows from sport suggesting she get together with them. Its hard, isn't it, to know who will be fun to live with. Her assumption is even if that does not work out, and they are searching for a couple more people, there will be someone who needs to fill a room sometime between now and September.

LineysRunner · 30/11/2017 17:58

@bigTillymint, yes DD is très arty & rock bohemian Smile

Student Christmas presents = money / food hampers incl chocolate / earphones or headphones / more money.

extinctspecies · 30/11/2017 18:28

I'm getting DS a hot water bottle, & new laptop.

BackforGood · 01/12/2017 00:27

dd phoned me today, all excited because they've settled on a house for next year, and it made me realise I'd not seen this thread for about 3 weeks! Must have dropped off 'Threads I'm on'.
Hope everyone is ok - no sure I've got time to read 611 posts Grin

JugglingFromHereToThere · 02/12/2017 10:22

Ooh, that's good news BackForGood! I'm hoping my DD might find a flat with her two friends ( current flatmates) before they break up for the Christmas hols, but realising that they only have a couple of weeks now! It seems like they are away for ages and then suddenly you are into December and realise they'll be home again very soon now! Yay! Will be so nice to have DD home for a decent amount of time over XMas, although was also great that she made it home for one weekend this term too - even though she chose a Uni on the other side of the country - well technically in another country (Wales)

Horsemad · 02/12/2017 17:44

DS is home for the weekend. I woke up this morning and could smell his footy boots!!! Grin

BehindTheBlueDoor · 02/12/2017 17:53

14 more sleeps Smile

lazydog · 02/12/2017 19:09

Picking DS up on the 13th. He has his last final exam of the semester the evening before. Very odd exam schedule (seems that this uni has form for that - he's the one who had a ridiculously long midterm exam paper to complete in a 50 minute lecture slot.) For these exams, they're allocated a normal length of time, but one is from 6-9pm on a Saturday??

HSMMaCM · 02/12/2017 21:48

Ah Horse. I'm so looking forward to those smelly shoes Grin

HSMMaCM · 02/12/2017 21:49

Lazy DD would not be impressed with an exam on a Saturday evening!

ono40 · 02/12/2017 22:54

One week until DS comes home. I saw some of his friends in town today so I think some unis like Durham and Oxford might have finished already. We all have stinking colds and DS2 has tonsillitis so we are feeling less than festive here.

lazydog · 03/12/2017 00:01

HSMMaCM - Neither was he when he first saw, but now I think he's not too bothered because it does mean that these finals are over and done with a day sooner than if they'd had to schedule them only on weekdays instead.

ono40 - Hope you're all feeling better soon Sad

Reallycantbebothered · 03/12/2017 10:09

Ds has finished for term ( ie finished all lectures/assignments/exams) but term doesn't officially end till next weekend.....so he's off on 6 hr train journey to Oxford for the week to see his gf and a Christmas Ball!...then returning to Uni for end of the week and hall parties
.will eventually be home with us on 12th and is immediately going out to see his mates
Will need to remember to stock up fridge!

RedHelenB · 03/12/2017 15:40

Had a lovely weekend with dd1, fed her a Sunday roast as she's not been eating well and trimmed up. Also signed the guarantor forms for next year's house. Not long till she's back for Christmas!

Blogwoman · 03/12/2017 23:18

Hi all, I’d also dropped off the thread. Hope everyone’s ok. Also counting days til DD comes home. She’s had a knock today though - best friend from home is at the same uni & having her there has helped DD so very much. Friend has decided to drop out & apply elsewhere for next year...

HSMMaCM · 03/12/2017 23:32

Oh shame about the friend. Hopefully she's settled enough to go it alone now?

DD has sent pics of 2 new tattoos, so we're prepared before she comes home.

Blogwoman · 04/12/2017 07:03

I hope so HSMM but she is reeling rather. Good job the end of term is in sight.
Your DD was sensible to prepare you for the tattoos!

extinctspecies · 04/12/2017 07:11

Lots of people picking their DC up at the end of term.

I thought DS could get the train home - after all, the bulky stuff will all stay in his room during the holidays, all he'll be bringing home is laundry!

Is that fair? It's a less than 2 hour train journey. About the same by car.
