A level biology remark

Majaso12 · 22/08/2017 11:51

Is it worth remarking A level biology that's 7 marks off an A? Would have to lose 16 marks to go down to a C. Not sure whether to get 1 paper remarked or whether it's worth the risk. My ds was very shocked and did feel he did so much better though and definitely did well enough for an A and even even A* after seeing how low the grade boundaries were.

You're on a hiding to nothing disagreeing with the MS! I understand the frustration, but that is precisely what they will check against.

Majaso12 · 24/08/2017 21:17

It's just knowing when to be specific and when not to be that's difficult. There was 1 mark definitely that has been missed and we didn't look at the 6 markers as they're too difficult to mark. Head of science has said now that he'll get a teacher to look over his papers in September but to bear in mind none of his staff have had the experience in interpreting the new specification exams like the examiners have. Has anyone else had any remarks done for this year's exams?

Good that school are going to look at it for you.

Majaso12 · 24/08/2017 21:51

RedHelen have you got the maths papers back yet?

Probably going to get one of ds1 papers remarked

Again he doesnt need the B grade (but is still annoyed by the C)

He took four papers and got 3 Bs and a U!!!

He cant possibly get worse than a U so its probably worth a punt in his case

RedHelenB · 24/08/2017 21:59

Not yet but dd still on holiday so if she's had an an email from college we won't know yet. They said 15 days for it to come back and its only been 6 days. I just want to know now!

Different subjects, (but still new Linear A levels) but we have been in remark limbo this week. History paper went up 12 marks, unit grade went up, but not enough to push overall grade up (missed an A by 2 marks) but still a huge difference in marks! English lit has just come back, definitely a marking error first time, as 16 mark difference which was enough to get the predicted A, hurray! Very happy daughter 🙂Bloomin' essay subjects, so unpredictable sometimes. Uni place not affected as was lucky enough to have unconditional offer for her first choice uni, but for various reasons she really could have done with a gap year before going, hence priority remarks as she was hoping to get conditional offer grades (they won't defer an unconditional place, but will defer if you make usual conditional offer grades, if that makes sense!). Risky if you're near the lower grade boundary, but we had nothing to lose.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 24/08/2017 22:03

Glad i read that

I was getting paranoid that ds1 isnt being entered for a remark til September the 5th onwards

But his isnt urgent/important

Although 12/16 marks is giving me hope!!!

Majaso12 · 24/08/2017 22:09

We managed go get OCR papers back by the next day and Edexcel on the same day. Going up 12/16 marks just makes me nervous DS could go down 16 marks and to the grade below!

We asked for a priority remark for DDs English Literature papers on the 17th and still not heard. It is AQA. Maybe some boards are a bit quicker.

hugoagogo · 25/08/2017 08:38

Ds is still waiting as well, the deadline is the 31st, I think but he was told " a few days" last thursday. Angry

Lucysky2017 · 25/08/2017 09:05

Different papers and boards make this complex. One of my sons immediately I believe challenged his A in geog as there was no chance in going down to a B and everyone was surprised he didn't get A*. I hope he made the right decision. They are looking at papers coming back to decide on another subject. The other one is going to challenge a weird mark in one paper (he got AAAD in that subject which made it overall a B which was a bit strange and he thinks his As were so good a remark will not bring him down to C overall so hopefully he will be challenging that one.

It seems to be quite a complex issue best discussed with teachers. One of their friends has already had a D marked up to a C. Had he got the C orginally he might have got his first choice place which wanted a B but too late for that now.

Our are not urgent as they both got their first choice university.

IdaBiscuit · 25/08/2017 09:21

How is there no chance of the geography going to a B?

Majaso12 · 25/08/2017 09:48

My ds is now considering retaking his c3 maths exam next year while at university to bring his overall grade up. Not sure how that would work though because I don't think his maths would be cashed in this year, would have to see if it would be ok with the university to do that and then check there won't be any exam clashes.

Why?

goodbyestranger · 25/08/2017 09:56

Ida it's purely numerical. I assume all the other papers added together got him an A, so he could have gone to zero on the paper and still have the A. That's a no risk remark.

Lucysky2017 · 25/08/2017 10:08

"No chance" is wrong of course, sorry. There is always a chance but if all the papers have high marks it is probably unlikely.

It is his twins' B (different subject) I am more interested in being remarked but in both cases am leaving it to the boys and the school to decide as I don't understand enough about the interaction between marks and grade boundaries. I was just upstairs a minute ago with that one and we do think his B would not become a C, very unlikely but still there is always a small risk. He had fairly high As on 3 papers and then the whole class got D or lower on one paper (no one therefore got A or A overall). I think he has now seen that D marked paper and looking at the question and the answer he and his teacher think he should appeal that one so he is going into school to sign the form today I believe. he also got As all year or A 9and A in AS and year prize in that subject and it's his university subject) so to get As always and in all papers except 1 and get dragged down to a D and the whole class get that low grade in that one paper just seems a bit strange but it's possible - they might have all mucked up that question or not learned it.

goodbyestranger · 25/08/2017 10:13

It is perfectly possible to have enough marks accrued across three papers for a fourth to be irrelevant in terms of an A grade. So some students might appeal to try to move up to an A* but be completely certain that they couldn't sink below an A, even if every mark on the paper was taken away in the re-mark.

Lucysky2017 · 25/08/2017 13:01

He's applied. Apparently it is unlikely his B (D on this paper) will go down to a C as he had AAA in the other 3 papers (and A in AS last year) but his B may well end up staying as it is which is fair enough. I think he and I would always wonder whether he should have appealed it had he not done so.

He had a remark of his French at GCSE and that remanied a B (it was his only B at GCSE) and that went down one mark (but not down a grade) on the remark so he's been a bit reluctant to put in for this remark. Anyway it's done now so we shall see.

sadusername2 · 25/08/2017 18:37

Well, AQA English Literature remark results back and the low paper went up by 13 marks taking her overall grade to an A. I don't think the other one changed! Will I get the money back for both papers?

RedHelenB · 25/08/2017 20:32

Think so if the overall grade went up.

IdaBiscuit · 25/08/2017 20:44

Well done Sad, you won't have to pay for either as there's been a grade change

Lucysky2017 · 25/08/2017 22:22

I don't think it's likely the geography grade will change but I feel the other subject should but we will wait to see. It is fine either way.

Majaso12 · 04/09/2017 18:29

RedHelen what have you decided to do about your dad's maths?
