OK, I know I'm a bit early, but let the hand-holding begin...

Come and join us if you (and your DC) are about to start the UCAS process in September - applying for a place in 2018.

I've got DS1, who wants to do Computer Science in 2018. Looking at various Russell Group unis and maybe Oxbridge.

dd got her first offer in, from her least favourite uni. All very anti climatic as it was just a standard offer.

Risotto301 · 16/10/2017 17:16

Thank you!

Glad that DS just got interview invite from Imperial!

marmiteloversunite · 16/10/2017 17:19

Hi All. My DD got an offer last week from Nottingham but we haven't heard from any others yet. She was just relieved that somebody wanted her! She got an email telling her to check the tracking system when she got the offer. She is now trying to get her essays together for Oxford because she is applying for music and needs to send examples of her work rather than an aptitude test. When will all the stress end? Always something to do or sort out at the moment!

voilets · 16/10/2017 18:53

We had an offer from Nott. Too. Very flattered, but not in her top 3. Would be nice to hear from them. Feel sure though, a long wait yet.

Still nice to get offers.Smile

Fifthtimelucky · 16/10/2017 21:43

Marmitelover, I have a daughter doing music at Oxford if you have any questions. She’s loving it.

marmiteloversunite · 16/10/2017 21:59

Fifthtime I am sure I will have loads of questions!! She is sending off the essays and composition later this week so fingers crossed they will want to interview her. Is your daughter enjoying it?

marmiteloversunite · 16/10/2017 22:00

Doh I see you said she loves it. Is she a performer or more composition/ history of music? What instrument does she play and to what level? See questions already! Fifthtime

Fifthtimelucky · 16/10/2017 22:02

Yes. She has been really happy there. This is her final year and she will be very sad to leave.

Fifthtimelucky · 16/10/2017 22:10

She is a bit of a multi-instrumentalist: piano main one, but also violin, viola, voice and a rarer instrument that I won’t mention as it could identify her. She is not interested in a career as a performer. She used to like composing and arranging at school but hasn’t done much of it since (her choice). Her main interests and strengths are in analysis and musicology. How about yours?

marmiteloversunite · 16/10/2017 23:04

Main instrument is voice but she also plays violin and piano. She just has a true love of music and enjoys learning about it. Half the time we don't understand what she is talking about! We know that Oxford is a long shot but are supporting her in trying for it. Will be a long few weeks waiting to find out if she has an interview!

Fifthtimelucky · 16/10/2017 23:11

Good luck to her. Where else (other than Nottingham) did she apply? Mine applied to Nottingham too, and also to Durham, Birmingham, and York.

marmiteloversunite · 17/10/2017 04:15

She applied for York, Bristol and Kings college, London. We are in the South West so she decided Durham was too far. She likes York best after Oxford. I like Bristol for geographical reasons and Kings has excellent links to the music industry in London so I'm not sure which she will go for if she gets offers for all.

OnlyTeaForMe · 17/10/2017 16:08

Oh dear, still no offers here and I daren't ask DS anything as last time he said 'they clearly don't want me'. Although I think he was half-joking I know he would like to have at least a couple in the bag by the end of half term.
He is predicted 1-2 grades above the standard offer and had excellent GCSEs, so I can't see why he would get some! (fingers crossed!)

They seem to be waiting for all or more offers in seems to me. DD has higher predicted than some courses and maybe they are not sure if such students will firm them. I'm presuming eventually they'll offer if they like PS but who knows? Nervous wait.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/10/2017 20:48

it is interesting that it is dds insurance insurance places that have offered and just with standard offers that look c/p from their website. I think they must know that it’s unlikely that dd will firm on them.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2017 21:04

Most offers are 'standard offers' nowadays, unless the applicant has something like a relevant EPQ which sometimes makes a grade or so difference. TBH I think for a lot its pretty much 'computer says yes' if the predicted grades are at the right level.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/10/2017 21:06

it’s so different from when I was a student! that’s useful to know Errol. All that work she did on the PS.

For Maths offers are indeed transparent and do not differ from what is described on the websites. Not sure why you would expect anything different?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/10/2017 21:22

it was different in my day user, granted that was about a hundred years ago! Wink

Also a friend of a friends son apparently was offered an unconditional offer in maths. But that’s grape vine stuff and may of course not actually be accurate.

good grief, it’s only in typing stuff that I realise Ive been an arrogant arse.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2017 21:36

It was different back in the day!

Some unis do give unconditional offers for some courses, for strong candidates , if they make it the firm choice. Birmingham, for instance, seems to have made it a key part of their recruitment strategy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/10/2017 21:44

thanks errol :)

Littledrummergirl · 17/10/2017 23:11

I've been on the othe thread mainly but there seems to be a lot more parents here.
Any other dc going for veterinary medicine or just mine?

roisin · 17/10/2017 23:12

Unis that look at the maths pre-test results, do then offer differentiated grades Ohyoubadkitten and sometimes faster/slower offers once the results are out.

Good luck with the year: ds2 went through the process last year. If you do have any questions, do send me a message.

ShanghaiDiva · 18/10/2017 03:13

Ds has applied for accounting and finance and has two offers so far:
Bath 36 points
Warwick 38 points.
He is taking the IB and is predicted 44/45.
Warwick is his joint favourite with Leeds so waiting to hear from them.

fairyofallthings · 18/10/2017 04:03

Birmingham have a tool on their website which shows if you are likely to get an unconditional, they don't do it for all subjects though. There is a list somewhere on their site but psychology was one that didn't.
