OK, I know I'm a bit early, but let the hand-holding begin...

Come and join us if you (and your DC) are about to start the UCAS process in September - applying for a place in 2018.

I've got DS1, who wants to do Computer Science in 2018. Looking at various Russell Group unis and maybe Oxbridge.

Thanks Lobster, appreciated. DD is Y11. £700 is a massive expense though - I can't quite square that with access. I suppose schools can help through the 16-19 bursary to an extent.

Ds has a 3 B offer from Cardiff, he is really pleased. I have the feeling that Cardiff gets a lot of A predicted applicants so they are giving him a leg up by offering him B's when he is only predicted B or under.. So I've told him he did well in the audition considering. May be wrong of course..(and they are trying to exclude him because he didn't do well enough in his audition)

aroundincircles21 · 15/03/2018 15:23

My DS has offers for History & Politics at Birmingham & Reading, however, Birmingham is a conditional AAA offer & Reading is Unconditional if firmed. Typically he’d prefer Birmingham but only predicted AAB and only confident of ABB! Readings offer reverts to AAB if insurance & they don’t guarantee halls if not firm. So, does he firm B’ham and risk losing out totally or firm Reading and accept that he’ll never know whether he could have made it to B’ham?! Does anyone know whether, if you firm an unconditional, you can go into Adjustment should you exceed expectations?

doistayordoigo · 15/03/2018 17:53

aroundincircles we have a similar dilemma, but ours is an unconditional if firm from Birmingham for Chemistry, or ABB for Warwick. My understanding (although I'm by no means an expert) is that if you firm an unconditional you can't enter clearing or adjustment, unless you can persuade them to release you.

Nettleskeins · 15/03/2018 18:38

around I know someone who got into Reading to read something historical/politicky but not giving you exact title, and his offer was ABB and he got in with BBC (however that was his first choice, but it still was not an unconditional) I suspect you can get away with putting Bmg first choice and still get into Reading as an insurance if he gets ABB. Reading is meant to be most enjoyable btw, I now k now two people who are doing/have done History type subjects there.

aroundincircles21 · 17/03/2018 10:51

Thanks Doistay, glad we aren’t the only ones! I have since been told that some Uni’s will often offer you an alternative course requiring lower grades if you don’t hit your target. Not sure whether Birmingham or Warwick do this though.

aroundincircles21 · 17/03/2018 10:53

That’s interesting Nettkeskeins. Sounds like it might be worth going for B’ham and hoping Reading will be flexible if he fails to get the grades. At least he really likes Reading so maybe not such a problem!

JumpingFrogs · 18/03/2018 17:41

I know someone who got an unconditional offer. However it wasn't her first choice so she rang and asked them to withdraw it and make her a (low) offer instead. They agreed and she has chosen them as her back up with a really low offer but is still aiming for another uni if her exams go well

1nutcracker · 27/03/2018 13:27

Have any Scottish students received a Maths offer that any of you are aware of?

marmiteloversunite · 28/03/2018 08:50

So DD presses the button for Bristol Uni yesterday. It is a relief to make a decision for all of us. She has no insurance as Nottingham wouldn't lower their offer but Bristol have given her BBC which should be doable. Going to do finance over the Easter holidays.

Just got to get through Violin grade 7 today and she can tick that off the stressful list too.

Nettleskeins · 28/03/2018 21:00

That is a low offer marmite she must be a fantastic musician Smile

Ds just got his rejection from Glasgow without even an interview. I'm assuming it is because he is on their EU quota pile Hmm he has an Irish passport and no UK passport. They said it was his grades...hrmph anyway problem of how to fit in a trip to Glasgow and inevitably not meeting their offer solved!! Hurray, I think ds is actually relieved, although he did love the place - at least the decision has been made for him. [and he could always try again next year if he wants to try with grades in hand]

GnomeDePlume · 28/03/2018 21:10

DD has all her offers in now. I think she is probably going to go for Sheffield as her firm (AAB) with UEA (BBB) as insurance.

She has an offer from Bristol also AAB but was a bit put off by the pressure of the course and by cost of accommodation.

marmiteloversunite · 28/03/2018 22:08

Nettle Yes we were surprised and pleased with the offer. I think it might have something to do with living in the South West and links to Bristol. Might be wrong.

Gnome I thought the Bristol accommodation was cheap compared to the London uni she looked at!! That started at £250 a week! Confused

Littledrummergirl · 28/03/2018 22:21

Ds1 still hasn't heard from Bristol. Hopefully he will hear soon.

GnomeDePlume · 28/03/2018 22:33

marmitelover it probably is cheap compared to London but DD wrote off London units early in the process on grounds of cost. The Bank of Mum & Dad is going to be stretched pretty thin from September as DD1 will be doing her Masters year and DD2 will be in her first year. The loans system seemingly takes no account of parents supporting two students at the same time.

marmiteloversunite · 28/03/2018 22:55

Yes Gnome I didn't even think about accommodation costs in my naivety! Just presumed they would all be roughly the same. Dreading the cost of it all. Then just as DD1 finishes DD2 will be starting probably!

bruffin · 28/03/2018 23:52

Dd still not made her mind up. We are in Catdiff for a few days to get a feel for the city.

Lolimax · 29/03/2018 07:40

Morning all. I don’t know if you remember me but I’m the (very) mature student who was applying and was accepted for Adult Nursing.
Anyway I start on the 9th April. I’m like a child at Christmas I’m that excited!

bruffin · 29/03/2018 09:26

Congrats for your course Lolimax

MollyHuaCha · 29/03/2018 14:40

Brilliant, Lolimax. Good luck as you start your course!

Littledrummergirl · 30/03/2018 00:22

Well done Lolimax. Ds1 heard from Bristol so is almost ready to hit go. Laying out the options for him tonight was 6 years in London (loves the idea), 5 years in Bristol (not keen) or a totally different course through clearing.
I'm 99. 9% sure he's going to London. He just has to confirm now and wait for the accommodation pack.

HesMyLobster · 30/03/2018 01:11

I remember you Lolimax! Congratulations, and a huge good luck for the start of your course! What an achievement!

Good news for your DS Drummer - it sounds like he knows what he wants but it's always good to have options.

Fifthtimelucky · 30/03/2018 11:00

Marmite: what a great offer for your daughter. It looks like they have given her their standard contextual offer. Bristol will be great. Hope the violin exam went well!

bruffin · 30/03/2018 19:19

Dd's pushed the button, She has chosen CardiffSmile

Nettleskeins · 30/03/2018 21:13

I want ds1 to choose Cardiff Smile. However, I've left all three prospectuses on his bed and will leave the decision (informed of courseWink) to him. The truth is that it is HIS decision not mine.
