Uni Freshers parents 2016?

hi

I've just been reading recent threads on weekly living costs and what to take to uni and found loads of useful info. I'm certainly finding that there was so much focus on getting the results/not tempting fate that it all feels a bit of a panic now. I have a dd going to warwick and a ds going to bath.

Wondered if there is already a thread for other general tips for those with dd/s starting uni this September?

That's useful LIZS. If it was me I'd be handing him a kitchen utensils/pans etc list by now and asking him to dish the search for required items out between them. Sadly I don't think my ds will be anything like that organised. Maybe it's one of those you "don't do"?

NoHaudinMaWheest · 08/09/2016 13:18

Hi all. Ds starting at the end of September in Swansea.
He got his accommodation ages ago within days of his place. I would be really worried if we had had to wait this long so sympathies.

Dunlurking ds kept the same account number etc. (Lloyds)

Any recommendations for basic cookbooks , using only a microwave and/or kettle! Saw one in the Works for meals in a mug.

dreamingofsun · 08/09/2016 13:39

lizs - i'm not bothering this year - i bought the older 2 ones and they never used them - they just go online.

bruiser1 · 08/09/2016 14:07

My DC is just about to start his second year at uni and here are my top tips:

  1. Make sure they have some Gaviscon for Freshers week or they will think they have a chest problem and are about to die.
  2. Take clothes of a similar colour they only do one wash.(include bedding and towels in this)
  3. Amazon is great for delivering items they might have forgotten.
  4. On line shopping for groceries is the best.
  5. A small fridge in their room is useful.
  6. Whats app is a great for making calls on the uni wifi.
  7. Don't bother with an iron it just collects dust.

and lastly don't worry they do survive!!

Dunlurking · 08/09/2016 16:17

NoHaudin thank you - very helpful - he has a Lloyds account!

bruiser thanks for the tips.

Yippee, DS got first choice hall at Warwick! So now he'll be able to eat, drink and be merry and won't need to get a term time job because it's really cheap! Someone said maths students at Warwick don't have time to work part-time as the course is pretty intense.

Smallish room with sink, shared bathroom between 6, shared kitchen between 12 or so, nearest laundry 2 minute walk, 34 week let, so has to move out at Easter with some limited storage. But as Warwick is only an hour or so away, driving up there to fetch stuff is easy. It has a common room as well in each block so should be pretty sociable.

DS has sorted his student bank account with Nationwide, just waiting for his card to pop through the door.

We were thinking of keeping his old bank account going in parallel, so if he got very overdrawn on the student account I could top up his old account and he'd still have access to food money, without it just paying off his overdraft. May not be necessary now his cheap accommodation has been confirmed. Grin

I was really worried when he chose Exeter as his insurance as the accommodation wasn't guaranteed as insurance, and he may have ended up with only really expensive or distant options, neither of which would have been great. Their cheapest accommodation was around £5k. But he wouldn't be told! Just as well he got Warwick.

I may be rambling a bit...

Dunlurking · 08/09/2016 17:20

Oh good news Ellen I'm so pleased for your ds. Yes we had the same concerns about Exeter as insurance. Anyway it's all worked out!

EllenJanethickerknickers · 08/09/2016 17:45

Our DSs are obviously destined to meet! Wink

BethanKate · 08/09/2016 17:56

Really pleased Ellen.

Useful tips bruiser.

NoHaudin my niece's boyfriend just finished at Swansea - had a great time.

I saw these types of wall stickers recommended as an easily removable decoration on the Student Room.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 08/09/2016 18:09

Thanks Bethan. Smile

Leeds2 · 08/09/2016 19:13

Pleased for you/your DS Ellen.

NapoleonsNose · 08/09/2016 19:22

DD has been allocated her room number today so is busy in a group Facebook chat finding flatmates. Packing is underway, although how it is all going to fit in the car is yet to be addressed!

EllenJanethickerknickers · 08/09/2016 19:33

Didn't your DD go to an American University, Leeds2? How is she doing? Are you coping with the long distance?

DS1 has joined a couple of FB chats, subject and now hall. Smile They don't seem to get room numbers yet, though.

Leeds2 · 08/09/2016 21:15

Thanks, Ellen. She has been there a couple of weeks now. Spent a night in hospital during orientation week, luckily OH and I were there doing parents' orientation (don't ask!) so were on hand to help. All fine now though, and lectures underway.

OH and I get to visit at the end of September when they have a Parents' Weekend.

Leeds2 · 08/09/2016 21:19

Not the same system here, I know, but my DD got talking to lots of fellow students through the FB page Selected her roommate that way, and has booked to go to roommate's family for Thanksgiving (with roommate's consent, lol) so I am pleased that seems to be working out.

Would encourage from my limited experience that DC use social media to chat to as many people as possible, particularly those they know they are going to be living with.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 08/09/2016 22:37

Wow, parents' orientation! It truly is a different world.

My friend (a Morman) has her daughter studying in university in Utah for a year but I think that's quite a 'safe' environment. She staying there over Christmas with family friends so won't be back until Easter. Can't imagine it!

Glad you get the opportunity to visit again soon. Smile I hope she's quite recovered, must have been a stressful time for all concerned.

DS1 is now on a huge FB hall chat, but as no one knows where in the hall they'll be staying yet, it's not entirely useful.

Leeds2 · 08/09/2016 22:51

Our parents' orientation lasted two days. I gather from someone OH works with that the Harvard one lasted 45 mins! I think it is just a means of tapping you up for money, if I'm honest.

Hope your DS finds out what room he is in soon. I also think it becomes "real" for them, once they have an actual address.

a7mints · 09/09/2016 11:14

Oh dear DS feeling very poorly today have meningititis vac yesterday.Sick, fever and headache .Good job nothing planned for the day!

lin4 · 09/09/2016 12:01

Ds still hasn't heard anything about his accommodation. He going to Warwick and got his place through Adjustment so we were expecting things to be late but not this late.

Dunlurking · 09/09/2016 15:18

a7mints sorry to hear about the Meng vac reaction. Hope your dd is better soon. lin4 as far as I can see there are still a couple of halls that haven't sent out yet - Lakeside and Heronfield, I think, so maybe a chance he'll hear today. Fingers crossed. What's he going to study?

Ellen and Leeds2 I think our parents' orientation is the Vice Chancellor's talk at midday the day we take them! Leeds2 glad she's settling in. Nice to have another trip over quite soon to see her.

lin4 · 09/09/2016 15:31

Thanks Dunlurking - Lakeside was one of his choices I think. He is studying Psychology. He is keen to know so he can join group chats as he is quite shy and wants to throw himself into things at the start which is good I suppose. We are also just an hour or so away although getting lost through Coventry on our way home after a visit, took a while longer.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 09/09/2016 16:52

Oh, good luck lin. I know I was feeling a little anxious when DS hadn't heard. I think Warwick are good at arranging off campus accommodation as well and putting like minded people together, even if things don't work out on campus.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 09/09/2016 16:58

Looks like Sherborne and Heronbank are just now sending out offers. You heard anything yet, lin?
