Leeds University accommodation

Just wondering how many of your DC have had accommodation confirmed at Leeds. DD had her offer confirmed on Thursday, she surpassed the entry requirements and is now on tenterhooks waiting to hear about Halls. One of her friends who is also going to Leeds heard on Friday. Getting nervous that she won't get the Halls she wants (Henry Price which we know is over subscribed)

Hope it goes well and isn't too hectic hellsbells Dh, ds and dn have had a lovely day, by all accounts. Very relaxed, lots of friendly helpful people pointing them to useful places (like Wilkos - full of students buying toasters etc!).

Kettles and toasters are only 5 quid each at wilkos, DD bought one for her Lupton flat last year, five students shared it every day, it still works and they took it with them to their lovely second year house in Hyde Park.

Glad to hear the Wilko stuff lasts Catnip Ds hoping it will survive 4 years of student life at least.

Good luck for tomorrow and Saturday hellsbells. That's going to be a bit tough emotionally, isn't it? Enjoy the Sunday lie-in!

For anyone going to Liberty Dock - apparently everything was brand new or freshly painted, except the fridge freezer. No need to be taking photos of stained mattresses/carpet stains/chipped paint, for the inventory!

Glad the move went well Feltcarrot. We left DD2 in Leeds yesterday as well. I have seen a couple of snapchats and she was obviously out enjoying herself in the union last night. I met 4 of her flat mates and they were lovely. Fingers crossed for them all.

Another flat mate has moved in today who happens to come from our small town!
MB seems to have a nice feel to it, hope they'll all be happy there, less than a 5 minute walk to the Chemistry block for Dd too!

How are those in Liberty Dock managing with the buses? Dn says they are sparse - often not turning up or very late. During freshers she has been sharing Uber taxis with flatmates but once lectures etc start she's worried about relying on them. Apparently there are supposed to be 3 an hour but one is often missing/cancelled and the other 2 run v late. Have your dcs had any better experiences? Also finding the area very unstudent like......Luckily she likes her flatmates who are all International students there for the same period.

Not great Dunlurking. The buses stop running at 7pm, so it is really inconvenient! She hasn't been too bad on nights out as, so far has always found someone to share a taxi with. It will be expensive when she starts to do sports training as it is a ÂŁ10 cab from Headingly back to LD. She thinks she may have found one other person to share that with, but it will still be expensive.

In the morning/evening she takes the number 70 to the train station, which takes 10 mins and then walks from there to the university, which takes her 15 mins. She has also hired a bike but there are far too few bike racks at LD and can never find anywhere to park it! She says the 28 takes forever to get there and is not very reliable.

She has made good friends with a couple of girls staying in Charles Morris and her 'sibling' stays in central village, so she has an open invitation to stay overnight with them any time she wants.

I think she will also go back to theirs for dinner on the nights she is training for hockey and netball as going home to LD and then back to the training venue just won't work, time wise.

DD was also horrified that it cost ÂŁ5 to do one load of washing and drying!

Report
Dunlurking · 27/09/2016 17:48

Yes dn is horrified by the washing costs as well soapybox. Thanks for the tip about the number 70. I don't know if she has worked that one out.

It must be the 28 she has been complaining about. It sounds horrendous for your dd if she wants to do her sports training. What a shame. I think dn will head home most days before 7 and socialise with her flatmates after that.

The bikes don't sound practical solutions either, do they. Universities sell themselves with all their facilities but are let down now by having halls so far out. One of ds's friends at Birmingham also 40 minutes away in a new hall - so much for how wonderful their campus etc is - what does that matter if you can't get there without a lot of trouble. (Actually I've just remembered I cycled 40 minutes from hall to university when I was a student. Oh well Halo)

Reading this with interest, my DD is not at leeds but is at Bristol. I thought the hall fees were steep but perhsps not so really. Her ensuite room is ÂŁ149 pw but they have a bus pass thrown in and the busses run every 10 mins from 8.00am to 4.00am and it costs less to do washing. I am counting my DDs blessings.

DD is at Leeds but luckily on campus - I can see next year being more difficult though. I think with nearly all universities, unfortunately some of the accommodation is further out than desirable

I hope the bus issue gets resolved

Dunlurking - I also remember being a trek away in the first year! And even further in subsequent years

hellsbells I'm glad your dd is OK. As regards halls in our day I guess it was my fault for choosing a city centre university rather than a campus one - it's a bit obvious really Blush.
Peace the Bristol halls ds and I looked round were fab (but the prices )

hellsbells99 · 27/09/2016 20:32

Sorry Dunlurking, I hope I didn't come across as " I'm alright Jack" Blush
DD got campus accommodation (although not 1st choice) due to medical issues.

Peaceandl0ve · 27/09/2016 20:34

I know the fees look steep but if students in other locations might be paying upto ÂŁ20 per week, if you include taxis after nights out, it becomes more reasonable. DDs room is indeed fab, they also have small, but perfectly formed gym free to use on site. This is another saving for DD.

I balked when she made her accomodation choice but i am pleased now. Being out of town also means more green space which was again important to my country bumpkin!
