A level Results - 18 days - anxiety rising....anyone else??

Poppledopple · 31/07/2016 13:31

Maybe because it is August tomorrow - but seems to have come round quickly. Had a nice break not thinking about anything since last exam and after full on year choosing, applying, getting rejected, getting offers etc....

Might as well switch off and try and get distracted for the next 18 days....as either way it will be v busy few days/weeks after results to get started on next phase of his life.

PFB -- any old hands out there want to give me a slap?

What are the general plans re parent presence when picking up results? I'm thinking I'll skulk in a road near the school so if it all goes horribly wrong I'm nearby to console DS2 - I don't think I can cope with just staying at home and waiting.

homebythesea · 11/08/2016 08:30

hassled will your DC really not know before going to school? How will they resist looking online and/or may already have received a "welcome to Scumbag Uni" type email (which I gather is very common)

poppledopple · 11/08/2016 09:57

Be wary of the welcome emails from accommodation etc before anything is confirmed on track - as PP has told the horrific story of her DD last year who got an accommodation email and assumed (why wouldn't she) that she was in to her firm - but later track showed she wasn't .... Apparently the marketing dept and accommodation dept are not coordinated with track at all.

hassled - alas i have to pick the results up by myself as DS will be on holiday abroad. I just hope he gets the right grades. Previously I've asked them if they'd prefer me to wait outside or go in

Peebles1 · 11/08/2016 10:06

Mission, I should imagine it depends on the uni and course. However, DS1 also deferred to do a gap year and also needed AAA, like your DD. He got AAC and they took him.* A star was in his chosen subject. Eng lit, so possibly different to science based subjects.

One week to go - argghh!

Peebles1 · 11/08/2016 10:10

Hassled we were away on hols with DS left at home (with 2 siblings) on results day. How bad is that?! Total mistake - we booked it without realising, doh.

Other years we drove them in and waited in the car.

This year I'll leave it up to DD. She drives, but last year she wanted me to be around (in the car).

I went on the bus when I was 18, and rang my parents from a phone box! Never thought of taking my parents. No one did - times change!

Peebles1 · 11/08/2016 10:11

Mission that should say A star A C. App being weird.

homebythesea · 11/08/2016 10:37

DS has already had accom allocated subject to acceptance (first come first served system after offers made) so no fears on that front for us poppledopple

Cocolepew · 11/08/2016 10:44

Well done to your DD Dot Star.
Im hoping DD knows before we go to school, she knew her AS ones.
At GCSE she was determined me and, DH wait outside. After 15 minutes we started to walk in and she had been showing her grades to other parents who asked her. She was to shy to say no. I was a bit hurt Blush.
My brother and nephew are coming over on Saturday so next week might not seem so long.
DD suffers from anxiety, she had very poor mental health in first year. She got beta blockers for her exams. I was on them yesterday HmmBlush

Hassled · 11/08/2016 10:53

It hadn't really occurred to me that we could get the results without leaving the house - I have been through all this before with older DCs but there's an age gap of a decade and back then I'm sure they could only find out when they were physically at school. And I've certainly managed to forget the levels of stress involved over the years - I'm in such a bloody state about it all and need to get a massive grip.

homebythesea · 11/08/2016 10:56

hassled can I suggest you look
At your school/college info about what happens on results day? We had screeds of notes from DS school about logging in to school portal/UCAS and what to do in various scenarios and what info to have to hand in the event that things have gone not quite to plan. Forewarned is forearmed and all that!

Cocolepew · 11/08/2016 10:58

I'm in a state too, I just don't want DD to be disappointed. I am managing to hide it from her though.
Her university choice doesn't do ucas points I have no idea what that means

dotdotdotmustdash · 11/08/2016 11:21

Our system in Scotland is much more straightforward for receiving results and doesn't involved the Dc going into school. They can sign up online to receive their results by text/email or they can choose not to and get them by post. Most of our Dc got a text by between 8-8.15am on Tuesday.

poppledopple · 11/08/2016 11:21

I have talked myself down into a negative spiral which is probably unrealistic and catastrophising .... Just spoken to DS to talk thru the various scenarios and he was shocked that I would consider he could get such low grades as he reminded me he has most if the marks in the bag theu AS and coursework....so I need to chill as much as he is.....

I've seen nothing from the school but it's highly likely DS2 has the information but hasn't bothered to read it. You're right that we need to be way more prepared than we are - but the news that he could be released from the insurance offer so he can go through Clearing has helped enormously - I've told him to have a look at Clearing and see what appeals. The AAA we're holding out for is Oxbridge and he's so hell bent on that he's not really thinking beyond it, but he just has to.

poppledopple · 11/08/2016 11:36

Same here - ours just log into school website at 8am for their results - same time as track updates - told NOT to come to school but staff will be on the phone or can be seen face to face by appt from 9-11 if issues.

Anyone know what time you can start calling uni's to beg .... will there not be anytime in until 9am. And do they tell you there and then on the phone their decision or does it usually not get decided until the following week....?

OP posts:
titchy · 11/08/2016 11:53

The clearing phone lines will be manned well before 9! Offers made there and then. Acceptances expected within 24 hours.

homebythesea · 11/08/2016 11:57

hassled I feel for you! Arm yourself with the College admissions dept for pleasing purposes if they don't outright reject (this will show on UCAS) but beware they may take time to come to a decision (a million years ago my Cantab College took 24 hours to consider my application after missed grades) in which time you can't apply for clearing places which will be frustrating

homebythesea · 11/08/2016 11:58

Of course should say "arm yourself with the phone number...."

sassymuffin · 11/08/2016 12:54

Just popping my head in to wish all DC's good luck, DD was here last year and the support on here kept me sane.
A few tips for the big day...

hellsbells99 · 11/08/2016 13:39

DD's school is open from 7am for results and advice. DD will probably not go in until she has been able to check Track (7.30am last year, officially 8am). I am not bothered about her actual grades, just whether she get a place at either of her 2 choices. DD will be disappointed though if she doesn't get her grades - and is quite certain that her physics will be lower and has fingers crossed for maths and chemistry.

poppledopple · 11/08/2016 13:52

OMG.....that Telegraph article has a live count down clock ..... Currently reading :
6 days : 11 hours : 7 mins : 15 secs

OP posts:
BaconAndAvocado · 11/08/2016 13:52

hellsbells haha my DS1 is in almost exactly the same position re his subjects!

Good luck to everyone Smile

poppledopple · 11/08/2016 13:57

hellbells - I am the same - ready dont care about the grades - just as long as he gets where he wants (or somewhere else good enough that he is happy with) - lowest his course has taken on clearing over the last few years is BBB on results day when standard offers are AAA - so plenty of slack. He said he would be gutted if he got BBB -- but I said that he needs to focus on the bigger picture and if that gets him onto is course then happy days....and he should nt look back.

Sorry poppledopple I didn't mean to panic anyone with the countdown clock at the bottom of that article Blush
