circular · 22/06/2015 09:01

Carrying on from yr13 thread, here thought we could share our ideas for Uni preparation.

All welcome, not just those in above thread. Would especially appreciate contributions from those who have 'been there'

Topics that spring to mind, and a few recent threads on them are :

What to take What to take , What NOT to take, Shared accommodation

Clearing out rooms

How much to contribute What does it cost, How much needed weekly, How much are you subbing

Budgeting, cooking, and other life skills to learn Easy recipes for teens

Leaving friends, family, boy/girlfriends behind

Us coping without them - noted series of 'Empty Nest' threads.

Hope all the links correct!

Do parents just dump and run or stay to help unpack I'd say most stayed a while to help, an hour or two at most. DH set up DS's computer and printer and there were a couple of hiccups that DS couldn't sort out.

The really, really don't need all the stuff mentioned on here Shock.
Bedding, including a mattress cover will be provided. Also a bedside light.
DS was kitted out with old crockery and pans of mine. Two of everything is enough. One large and one small pan.
He ended up in a cooking rota so cooks once a week but for 8 people (works out extremely cheap) so needed a very large pan or casserole. However this doesn't happen in all flats.

I packed a small treats box to be opened after we left.
In there was
Chocolate
Some photos of family to pin on the pinboard
1 bottle of vodka
Shot Glasses
A framed photo of his GF

I recommend Littleham's list as she is HE / halls expert

Littleham · 24/06/2015 14:34

Thanks Secret Smile Enthusiastic amateur I think!

My list probably goes overboard, but at least you can cross off anything you think is completely bonkers.

GypsyFloss · 24/06/2015 14:36

Littleham please could I have your list?

I think that's what we will do Secretsquirrels assuming it all goes ahead.

Littleham · 24/06/2015 14:38

No problem. I will have to send it as an attachment (yes it is that long) so you will need to PM me with your e-mail address.

This is really useful link from last year

www.thestudentroom.co.uk/content.php?r=15855-what-to-take-to-university

I remember worrying and DS not really being bothered.
He's now about to start Yr2 and move into a house with 6 others ( will need to buy a biohazard suit for a visit Grin)

Horsemad · 24/06/2015 16:44

That link made me Grin - did you read the bit about what you don't need to take?!! Grin

I love the bit in that link about parents. " if they want to go to uni , they can apply through UCAS" Grin

I've decided I'll worry about it once the results are in. We have 3 options here, catered, non- catered and gap year and I think I might drive myself mad trying to cover all 3 before results day.

Having said that I have bought her a furry throw, a door stop and some battery fairy lights for her " bottom drawer" Smile

I'm doing nothing until 13th August Wink

NiceCardigan · 24/06/2015 17:30

I'm with the do nothings DS is of a minimalist persuasion anyway and so will probably be done in one shopping trip. DD2 manages to completely fill the car and usually has to sit on the bedding because it won't fit anywhere else.

MiffyMyKitty · 24/06/2015 18:14

Thanks for the link whatsinaname name wow that's one very comprehensive list! So much things we didn't think to take that are handy like door wedge! Grin So glad the list has reminded me to make sure dd jabs are up to date for uni. We've heard that bugs and sickness spread like wild fire when at uni.

Needmoresleep · 24/06/2015 18:53

Jabs. Isn't there a new meningitis jab, students are supposed to have. I seem to remember DS going to the GPs for it.

MiffyMyKitty · 24/06/2015 19:09

On the gov website it says recommended Meningitis C vaccine for students going to uni from 2014 onwards.

AtiaoftheJulii · 25/06/2015 08:37

I haven't even started thinking about this stuff, and I think I'm going to put it off to 13th August.

dd1 has bought a disposable camera so she can have some real photos to take with her and put on her wall!

fussychica · 25/06/2015 08:50

If you only have a small car , no car or coming from abroad consider using "send my bag" or similar company to transport their stuff. We used it for the yead abroad and though it wasn't flawless it was a life saver.

Horsemad · 25/06/2015 19:15

Yes, there's definitely a Meningitis jab they should have before going to Uni.

Studentfeast · 26/06/2015 09:06

Hi all, as a student at university myself (3rd year) I remember how hard it was to prepare everything for my first year when I was a fresher, and of course my parents were running around trying to get everything sorted! You can find plenty of forums around the web giving student tips, each one with even more information to remember! I have started a web page, for cheap and simple student recipes specifically - Feel free to submit your own recipes to help other students out! As well as articles, blogs and student discounts all to help students' transition from home to university. Of course the website is a fresher itself so it needs more content but bare with us: www.studentfeast.co.uk

Back to preparing for what to take, the main items I would say that I forgot to take were: playing cards, tin opener, shower mat, sponges for cleaning, tupperware boxes for bulk cooking (this comes in so handy), a flask for late library sessions and most of all - NAILCUTTERS!

while these may seem like small items, they are indeed fairly hard to live without: i would rather have some nail cutters than a rice cooker any day!

Also, don't worry too much (I told my parents the same thing) its easier said than done, but if there is anything left forgotten just post it over to them at their university address, simple!

Finally, it's also worth checking their accommodations web page, to see what is included and what is not... I remember buying a kettle and an iron, only to find out that my accommodation already provided these for us!

Sorry for the essay, but thank you for reading!

DC4 is off to uni this September and she is looking forward to planning most things herself. I'll help with the driving and I'll happily get her some things if she asks but I think it's more fun for her to do it. Its not a problem if she forgets something as there are supermarkets everywhere and she can order things on Amazon.

My three Older DCs are all at uni in shared houses - they really don't have much stuff, I think they are all minimalists.

i got them all good quality mattress toppers which they have all said are really useful. The other thing they have all ended up doing is having two sets of bed linen in a neutral colour that can be washed with darks or with lights. 99% of the clothes my boys have at uni are dark which makes laundry a lot simpler to organise.

Was wondering about mattress toppers, never used one before, only mattress covers.
So would a topper (presuming 4ft small double max size) fir in a washing machine?
Would you need a mattress cover / protector either above or below the topper as well?

OwlsEscapade · 27/06/2015 18:55

The toppers we get have removable covers.
