I thought I would start a new one, as the last one went a bit 'off topic'! How's everyone getting on? Am so excited, and a bit nervous, as DS has two interviews coming up! How is everyone else's DCs preparing? Also, any tips from anyone who's been there?

It's long and tedious isn't it! Well done to your DD with her favourites! Would she be tempted to withdraw from the other two, so she can get on with the process?

OP posts:
Decorhate · 04/03/2015 17:08

If she hasn't heard by the end of the month she probably will withdraw. I think she just wants to see if they were going to offer or reject! Only natural I suppose after jumping through all the hoops

Mindgone · 04/03/2015 17:40

So many hoops! Grin I understand, it would be a massive feather in her cap to get 4 offers!

My friends dd just got an email from Cardiff about accommodation, but no offer or rejection- anyone else? DS has firmed Leeds!

Mindgone · 04/03/2015 22:38

That's great news Carriemac, well done to your son for firming Leeds! It's a fab place to be a student, he'll love it!

QueenQueenie · 04/03/2015 23:20

Ds withdrew from his 3rd and 4th choices (had offers of interviews but withdrew pre interview iyswim) once he'd received offers from the other two.
Just the small matter of those grades now...

Carriemac · 05/03/2015 07:55

Thanks mindgons, I hope he has a nice cohort, his alopecia has progressed and he has lost all his body hair so not the handsome confident boy he used to be. I really feel for him, his mates have been great but a new crown will never have known him as he was.

QueenQueenie · 05/03/2015 10:37

That sounds very hard for him (and you) Carrie. Has anyone been able to tell you whether this is a permanent thing for him or something that might change with time / any relevant treatment?

Carriemac · 05/03/2015 12:26

In his case, he has a 1 in 10 change of it growing back. I'm optimistic there are new treatments in the pipeline, but a few years away. He is being an absolute star though.

Mindgone · 08/03/2015 23:15

Gosh Carrie, that's so tough for you all, obv especially your DS. I'm sure he'll be fine making new friends on his course, after all, we know how picky they are choosing the most compassionate and caring candidates. I only have sons, and I know that it really doesn't matter to them at all what friends look like, if they are a decent person, and good fun, they're friends. I'm sure it's hard coping with something like this, especially when it's so new, but if your son can act like it hasn't happened, and everything is the same, then his old self will shine through, and new friends will only see that, his great personality. I'm sure I'm not putting this the right way at all, but what I'm trying to say is that confidence really helps, and "faking it 'till you make it" is to be recommended!

That's so nice to hear mind gone. He is carrying on as normal.i am still so,excited for him , assuming he gets the grades, that he has is first choice firmed.

Mindgone · 17/03/2015 11:17

Well, I'm finding all this waiting a bit tiresome now! We keep expecting news 'any day now' but then still nothing! Nottingham have started giving out offers, but at least no rejection, yet! And Durham haven't started giving out any to home students yet, or so it seems from tsr. I think we'd just like to know now so we can move on, yes, me too! ;)

OP posts:
Decorhate · 17/03/2015 18:06

Yes it would be nice to just get on with it. I heard that Cardiff are still interviewing!!

Carriemac · 22/03/2015 09:16

Any further news anyone? DS is finishing his EPQ this weekend thankfully. And choosing leeds accomodation if anyone had any advice? Self catering .

Pipsqueak11 · 22/03/2015 09:43

DD in year 2 at leeds and loves it - she spent her first year in Charles Morris Hall. It is very close to the med school / gym/ union etc modern and got a A good feel to it. It is catered during the week and self catering at the weekend. DD became fed up of the catered because the choice seems to be very carb based. But having said that she lived her year there and made great friends that she now house shares with. I Think it is one of the more expensive halls but the students who were there seem to really like it so maybe worth it for the first year / has a good social scene too x

Mindgone · 22/03/2015 14:56

STILL waiting on the last two! Durham have said that they will start their offers on Tue and they'll last a week, and Nottingham have said that we'll hear nothing before April! At least that information is better than expecting news any minute for weeks!

Carrie, DS1 is in Lupton and has been very happy there. Mind you, it wasn't his first choice, even though he was unconditional! Looking back, his first choice had less places available, so I guess more chance of not getting it, iyswim! Lupton is a good walk or a bus from uni, but it has great supermarkets on the doorstep. My advice would be to think about what's most important to him, and then choose a place which ticks the boxes, and has lots of places available.

Waiting on Cardiff here. Apparently it will be the end of the month at earliest.

EPQ presentation here next week too. I am not allowed to go!

angethomp190 · 22/03/2015 21:42

DD got an offer from Brighton and Sussex on Friday. It's her only offer but she only needs one really. I am so pleased for her - just need to get the grades now and apply for some accomm.

I hope those who are still waiting hear soon.

Mindgone · 23/03/2015 12:09

Congratulations to your DD Ange, that's great news! Grin

Carrie, DS1 came home from Leeds for Easter yesterday, and just added that he likes Lupton so much because it's very down to earth and unpretentious. It's cheaper than others, but the bus costs £1 each way.

OP posts:
Decorhate · 23/03/2015 17:22

Fantastic news Ange! Think we will all have nerves of steel after this year

angethomp190 · 24/03/2015 07:48

Yes we certainly will. I can't say I'm looking forward to the exam season but I want them over with too.

My DS is doing GCSEs and DD is doing 4 A levels so things will be a little tense. I'm a private tutor and so have all my students to prepare and worry about too!

Carriemac · 24/03/2015 12:10

I have DTs doing GCSEs and DS doing A levels !

Mindgone · 26/03/2015 23:12

Rejection from Durham! Sad I really could have seen him there! But I have to remind myself that he is in the minority to have an offer, and at least his offer is from his second favourite! I know we are all warned that this is a tough process, but it really is!
On a happier note, we had a really good last ever (!) parents' evening Smile he should get his grades, but no room for complacency!

OP posts:
Decorhate · 27/03/2015 06:23

Oh that's a shame Mindgone. But as you say, you only need one offer.

Carriemac · 27/03/2015 11:01

Thats a shame. At least he has an offer. is he keen on nottingham?
