Thought we might need a new thread for the results...

there was an article in the sunday times yesterday though saying that the exam boards were going to lower the grade boundaries to soften the effect of the changes which seems not to make sense to me - either they are volatile or they have taken measures to prevent the volatility Confused

Littleham · 04/08/2014 10:23

Let hope by top grades they mean A*. I guess that journalists will spin the story both ways. Also saw an article about fees at Oxford and Cambridge (& other universities in due course no doubt) being raised to £16,000. Shock

£16K Now there is a disincentive to higher education if £9k wasn't already.

Have the feeling that the next ten days are going to be the longest 10 days !! I think I feel worse waiting for DDs results than I did for my own A level results. It's that awful stomach churning angst that you want their hard work to be rewarded with a place at their chosen Uni. My DD has Southampton has her firm and Bath as her insurance and we were chatting tonight and I said that some students would be thrilled at a place at Bath so she shouldn't be disappointed if that's where she ends up. Then, my own words came back to haunt me - I had told her when we were doing the mad round of open days across Britain that she would go to one and just feel that was where she wanted to be and she says that's how she feels about Southampton and that it is where she pictures herself when she thinks of Uni. Is anyone else getting that awful knotty feeling inside this far ahead or am I just neurotic mother of the year?

popcornpaws · 04/08/2014 23:51

I should be going to bed but i have the knotty feeling as well tracey
My dd will receive her results by email, then text sometime between 1am and 9am, (Scotland) I've been feeling ill all day whilst she is roaring with laughter at some comedy!!

traceyinrosso70 · 04/08/2014 23:56

Popcorn paws - I feel your knottiness! At least this time tomorrow you will know for sure what's happening. I just feel now that we need to know good or bad and just get on with it !

traceyinrosso70 · 04/08/2014 23:56

My DD did A level languages so her oral exams were back in May too :(

popcornpaws · 05/08/2014 00:09

Im hoping she'l get an email soon so i can go to bed, and still not sleep!!

popcornpaws · 05/08/2014 00:13

Right, I'm off to bed, sod this, hope your dc is happy with their results!

BeckAndCall · 05/08/2014 07:17

tracey this is the thread for feeling knotty - we've been feeling knotty for weeks and it's not getting any better!

If I'm understanding popcorn's post correctly - very best of luck for today

traceyinrosso70 · 05/08/2014 07:25

popcornpaws - any news yet ?

Littleham · 05/08/2014 10:58

I think that I am a very good contender for the title of 'Neurotic Mother of the Year'. Can't sleep, can't eat (apart from chocolate), can't think straight & every worst case scenario spins around my head.

Have just had to reassure DD1 that she is not a failure if she doesn't get her choices & that there are plenty of second opportunities in life. So I know now she is worrying a lot too - she just bottles it all up.

Good luck popcornpaws. At least you will know soon.

Yeeha! DD passed all her exams, we have been busy all morning flat hunting (on the internet) and the deposit is paid and she leaves on 7th sept.
I have a nervous rash all over my face and neck, still feel sick and have been blabbing all morning because aim so proud of her!

Littleham · 05/08/2014 12:41

Congratulations! Smile

Thankyou, and good luck to everyone still waiting on results!

So pleased for popcornpaws keep your fingers crossed for the rest of us !!

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 05/08/2014 17:38

Had my first knotty moment today for DS2. I remembered the butterflies waiting for the UCAS site to say whether DS1 had got in or not last August. He did get in and we were jumping about with joy and relief. It was strange later that day to find he had missed his offer by quite some distance. I'm so glad we did things that way round and that he's really pulled his finger out in the first year

DS 2 needs mega grades so here goes!

traceyinrosso70 · 05/08/2014 20:07

That's interesting. School opens at 8am for DD and as UCAS goes live at 8am we were debating which way round to do it ie stay at home until Uni place confirmed/in clearing or go to school first ???

Littleham · 05/08/2014 20:37

There is an 'Exams Results Helpline' - 0808 100 8000.

It opens on August 14th, in case of any panic questions on the day. (Free from landlines, but not mobiles).

You've got stronger nerves than me if you could let her go off to school before finding out whether she's in. Smile

BeckAndCall · 06/08/2014 07:37

tracey the UCAS site often becomes available early - with my eldest it was about 6am - but with my next one it didn't upload until 12 noon(!) as it was overloaded that year ( that was horrible!).

I heard it said that one year it updated at just after midnight - but others with older DC from that year might confirm.

I'd be very surprised if it's not available at least a couple of hours before 8am - so most people will do that first then go into school in the knowledge that they have their uni place

eatyourveg · 06/08/2014 07:40

Ucas nearly always goes live before the scheduled 8am. It was 7.30 ish last year and very slightly earlier the year before. Ds was so much more relaxed going into school knowing he had got his firm. The grades themselves were to some extent irrelevant. Had he not got his firm or insurance then at least he would have gone to school knowing he had to see the ucas coordinator to discuss his plan B. I do feel for you ladies with tummy knots. Its much easier (and less stressful - though not a complete cure for tummy knots) if they have a plan B and C, one for not so good grades and one for better than expected grades, .

traceyinrosso70 · 06/08/2014 07:47

Plan A is AAA and to firm and plan B is ABB to Bath and we are hopeful not to need plan C but as she is wanting to do languages she should get a good Uni through clearing as language students in decline.

traceyinrosso70 · 06/08/2014 09:30

Does anyone know whether you have to have a paper copy of the confirmation letter from UCAS to open a bank account or will a copy of the confirmation email suffice ? DD isn't around much post results and was thinking of trying to open her account on the Saturday after results day.

secretsquirrels · 06/08/2014 10:59

traceyinrosso70 Opening a bank account, let alone a student bank account requires mountains of paperwork to prove you are not a money laundering criminal. Passports, proof of address etc. I doubt it is something you can do on her behalf.
Having said that, DS has a Lloyds under 19 account and they have written to him telling him he can convert it to a student account. Of course this was after DH spent hours sorting him out a good, interest paying current account
