Anybody done one? Mine seems to want cake and that certainly doesn't survive the post.

Any other ideas? Think food!

Brownie and flapjack post well.

Lambstales · 28/05/2014 21:14

I did think of flapjack but I'd hate her to have to go to the dentist!
A softer one would crumble. (Probably wouldn't mind eating it with a spoon).
Brownie posts well? Could end up as a soggy choc ball, mind you that might appeal.

Tight pack them in a Tupperware and they will be fine.

ElizabethJennings · 28/05/2014 21:41

My Greek flatmate's mum used to send him spanakopita all the way from Greece!

Lambstales · 28/05/2014 21:50

Thank you.
BTW got a great one here.. a coconut and choc traybake by Bill Granger.
I cooked it yesterday, delicious, not enough left to post Blush.
It's like a giant guey bounty.... I digress
Doesn't want coconut..... phew...

Last year I had 24 cupcakes delivered to DS2 house in Nottingham (particularly as DS2 had had a particularly nasty exam in his finals).
I sourced a cupcake baker through the Internet & she delivered them to his house at the end of exams where the 7 boys scoffed them all.

Lambstales · 30/05/2014 20:50

Bearcatt what a great idea. I'm already looking into it!

Home cooking isn't always best (in this instance).

Would an Ocado order with lots of goodies not be special enough?

I've used Meg Rivers Cakes and The Brownie Post (for ummmm brownies by post) in the past to mail cakes, and both have been very well received.

Meg Rivers do a 'student box' I think - cake, biscuits, traybake.

Lambstales · 30/05/2014 21:57

I'm afraid Ocado doesn't hit the spot for this.

Onepottwopot Will have a look, sounds promising..

Not having much luck with the local bakers, Bearcatt. They've gone down the wedding and celebration cake road.

When I lived in the US my Mum used to post me Christmas cake and Christmas pudding every year. They survived the journey fine.

First Finals paper is tomorrow - one a day for six days, then two days off, then another three. I sent a carrot cake and sweet peas and stocks. Nothing I can do apart from that. Haven't wanted to phone today, I'd just be a nuisance. Younger brothers have A Level papers and ASs tomorrow too. Just horrible. I'm so glad my exam days are over.

chemenger · 02/06/2014 10:48

I am going to put my sensible hat on and say that cake etc is not the best thing to send. I remember living on treats during my finals, and to be honest I would have been better off eating good square meals. What about finding a service that will deliver good quality ready meals rather than cake? I know I feel the difference when I eat proper food instead of junk.

Molio · 02/06/2014 11:05

Come on chemenger - a good carrot cake with free range everything is marvellously healthy and a good lifter of spirits. Who needs broccoli at a time like this?

chemenger · 02/06/2014 12:41

Just being practical. I see students every day who probably have scarcely seen the light of day or eaten anything except mars bars, muffiins, lattes and red bull for weeks. They would appreciate a good meal and not having to think about where that meal was coming from. I would have appreciated not having to shop for food and cook it more than a sticky bun. There is no shortage of cake and chocolate for sale around this university.

Lambstales · 02/06/2014 18:44

chemenger thank you for your thoughtful post. I would agree with the awful student diet but she eats in hall :)

PS. whispers.... chem student!

chemenger this was a light hearted thread. In fact I got so concerned about DD the fact is I drove up la couple of hundred miles last week with a box of pasta/ pesto/ bread etc . A few days later, as an antidote, I provided frivolity with carrot cake and sweet peas. To be honest, by this stage, long term health concerns are out the window and messages of support (however subliminal, via carrot cake or whatever) are more important than a couple of weeks of winging it with food. To be honest the food is peripheral. It's just a nice to do as a mum.

Molio · 02/06/2014 21:50

drove up a (not la) couple of hundred miles. etc.

Anyhow, bottom line is I'm worried.

omletta · 02/06/2014 21:55

Even in Hall food is expensive - some carefully thought out treats will be very much appreciated - I'm sure a trip to Waitrose with an empty shoe box would be spot on - make sure she knows to check for post though, IMO they get so focused all basic functionality ceases.

MillyMollyMama · 03/06/2014 00:50

Hmmm. I just let mine get on with it!!!! Finished today!

chemenger · 03/06/2014 09:00

Actually I have a better idea - send the cake to your students' lecturers and put them in a good mood for marking!

omletta · 03/06/2014 09:54

I have to tell you that I have just taken two of my students who are finalists a cup cake and cookie each - and they were pretty blooming chuffed! The pressure these students are under - at this institution anyway, is immense and I think a little sugar goes a long way.

omletta too true about checking the post. It took her three days to find the 'good luck' card. probably the first one she's had from us.

That is sooo good of you to give your students a treat like that.

The whole idea is about relieving the pressure and lifting the spirits, not nutrition. They can sort the diet out in the summer.
