Pharmacy degree - any advice welcome re: unis etc!

hellsbells99 · 12/03/2014 11:54

DD is planning to apply for a pharmacy degree course. She is obviously starting to look at what unis do it etc. and looking at which open days to go to.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice/information from their DC's experiences?
Thanks very much!

My friend's DD is at Aston and having a great time.

Small campus but in the middle of Birmingham, so suits quiet students and party ones!

hellsbells99 · 12/03/2014 17:58

Thanks Creamteas - that is on our list!

School of Pharmacy at UCL? All my friends who went loved it and got good jobs in the fields they were interested in afterwards.

leosdad · 16/03/2014 18:54

UCL King Nottingham Bath Brighton and Manchester have all got good reputations amongst the employers for afterwards. Jobs not as easy to get as five years ago as there are too many new schools opening.
Most courses are similar as they have to be approved by the General pharmaceutical council.

Thanks very much for all the information.
We don't know much about the London ones as we are 'up North' - are any of them campus unis?
Nottingham, Bath and Manchester are definitely on our list and DD is also wanting to go and look at Brighton as she thinks that living there would be great.

None of the London colleges are campus ones, however, UCL is fairly compact in the Bloomsbury area all walkable no need for tube journeys.

hellsbells99 · 17/03/2014 10:41

Hi Lonecat.
Is it mega expensive to live around there do you know?
Also do they still get a good 'student experience' in London?
Any information gratefully received!

I don't know current prices, I am also not certain you mean by good student experience. I found it a great area to be a student so many things in walking distance.

hellsbells99 · 17/03/2014 12:28

Hi Lonecat.
I just meant is DD more likely to feel isolated if not on a campus or are the Halls very sociable anyway?
DD is not an extrovert and has not been brought up in a large city, hence I think she may enjoy a campus environment more.
She is booking open days at a variety of unis so she can have a look for herself.
Did you study at UCL?
thanks for all advice/info.

I studied near UCL. I moved from a farm in the middle of nowhere quickly made friends and had a fab time, maybe going home once a term.
My sister went to Loughborough (some campus Uni) and would say survived her time at Uni by going home most weekends.
So campus not necessarily better.

Thanks!

UCL has higher proportion of students who live at home. Accommodation great in first year in halls (ucl halls plus general university of london halls) all in walking distance of lectures and practicals (and museums, theatres, tourist attractions, euston and kings cross) Subsequent years not so good as students tend to find accommodation in holloway, kilburn, finsbury park etc which will still involve a substantial amount on the oyster card especially as pharmacy lectures tend to start at 9am so peak fares.
Rents probably about £120 per week per person plus £30 per week on travel, halls about £180 or so including most meals.
Summer jobs in bars and shops help a lot and are easier to get than most other towns very difficult although not impossible to get pharmacy related work.
I studied at UCL and DD is currently at UCL (she is not studying pharmacy)

assandun · 21/03/2014 16:32

If she is looking for a campus uni, I suggest she looks at Keele. I'm currently studying pharmacy there. For a supportive campus feel, I haven't experienced any better and I went to lots of open days!

kritur · 24/03/2014 19:37

Bradford has a strong reputation for pharmacy (although the Head of the school of pharmacy recently moved to Manchester) plus it is dirt cheap to live in and the city is small buy diverse so offers a range of clinical and community experiences.

mindgone · 25/03/2014 15:32

DS applied for pharmacy last year and I did a few open days with him. His 5 were Durham, Manchester, Sunderland, Huddersfield and Reading. He firmed Manchester and insured Sunderland. In the end though, he changed his mind, has had a gap year, and is off to study chemical engineering in September.
My best advice would be to encourage your DD to go to some other related talks whilst at open days, to test her commitment to pharmacy. DS refused to do this as he knew his own mind!! Wink

hellsbells99 · 26/03/2014 09:55

Thank you very much for all your replies - most helpful!
Assandun - what do you think of Keele? I think the only thing that puts DD off is it seems a bit in the middle of nowhere. We have booked an open day to have a look round in June. I believe it is a lovely campus?

mindgone - what made your DS change his mind if you don't mind me asking? We have booked on to the chemistry and biochemistry talks at a couple of open days. Also, what did you think of Manchester and Sunderland (and the others you visited/chose)? Thanks for any help/advice :)

A friend of mine used to teach on the Bradford one - I think it is pretty good.

My niece is in her final year at Bath and has loved it, like your DD she comes from a small village and is not hugely extrovert but has made lots of friends and had a great time. She has also had no problem getting a pre reg year.

hellsbells99 · 26/03/2014 11:54

NCISaddict - we have Bath on our list I fancy a couple of days there It is reassuring to hear your niece got a pre-reg year as that will be a worry nowadays. Thanks.

I studied pharmacy at UEA in Norwich, excellent university

hellsbells99 · 26/03/2014 13:06

Thanks Pschic - this is one DD is particularly interested in but it is a long way from us. We have booked to go and have a look.

Hi Hellsbells, DS changed his mind on results day when he did a lot better than expected. We suggested that he took his time, because he suddenly had a lot more options available to him. A few of his friends were applying for chemical engineering, and he thought it sounded really good, but beyond him at the time.
We also had our concerns about pharmacy, but of course supported him all the way if that's what he really wanted to do. The concerns are mainly to do with an over supply of pharmacists, both now and in the future, esp with new schools of pharmacy opening. Jobs seem to be harder to get, and locum rates have gone down significantly. Sorry if that's too much honesty! It's just the information we have gathered from past and present pharmacists. I would encourage your daughter to speak to several pharmacists if she can, and get some work experience too. And if it's still her dream, then of course she should go for it! DS was highly excited about it until his last minute re think.
As far as the unis go, he really liked all the ones he chose (he didn't visit Durham though). I think Manchester won for him because of its impressive facilities, and vibrant city campus. Also geography, not too near or too far.
The choice also came down to their offers, Durham AAB, Manchester ABB, Huddersfield ABB and Sunderland BBB, he withdrew from Reading because it was a long way for the interview, and he had their standard offer from Manchester, which he loved.
He loved UEA, but it was just too far away, and no easy way home. Cardiff was very nice, don't know what put him off that, maybe because it was our first open day, and a lot to take in. Liked Nottingham, but didn't think he would get an offer as his AS grades weren't that great. Also liked Keele very much, if it wasn't so close to home!
I think this has been by far my longest ever post! I hope it's of some help to you, please feel free to ask anything else :)

hellsbells99 · 27/03/2014 12:55

Hi mindgone. Thanks for some excellent information. We know there are concerns about pharmacy but at the moment this is what she wants to do - hospital/clinical pharmacy. She has got some work experience and is hoping to get more this summer. Manchester would be a good one for us - your DS did well to get that offer as it is normally higher than that I believe. DD says if she goes to UEA she can get a flight back to Manchester (just down the motorway from us)! I don't think she fancies going as far 'up North' as Sunderland - but she needs to sort out an insurance choice. Planning on looking at DMU as I believe that has a good reputation and may accept lower grades than offered. I don't think chemical engineering would suit her - although DD2 may look at this. We are going to go to other talks and look at other courses as well. Thanks again for info and good luck to your DS!
