A Level Anxiety

Toffee22 · 14/08/2011 22:42

Only 4 more "sleeps" until the A level results come out - not that I will be doing much sleeping...

Eldest son wants to study medicine. 3 "A's" required no slip ups allowed. Have just checked and most medical schools don't accept re-sits. How can I face looking at the cold hard facts at some point on Thursday. I'm sure it will be difficult for my son too! When I tried to talk to him about it today instead of a response he said he would do an "impression of a tree". It wasn't even a very good impression. What does this mean?

Fellatio DD2's insurance choice updated on track at about 7am this morning to unconditional but her first choice only changed at 1.30pm. She needed AAA and got AAB but they've accepted her now. I wouldn't jump too quickly as UEA may have made a decision and it hasn't been updated yet in the IT mess.

CafeZero · 18/08/2011 15:30

Is anyone else desperate for 4pm so we can find out where Fells lad has got in? The suspense is killing me. My DD has gone out to celebrate by having a ring in her nose....after such fantastic results there really is nothing I could say!

harbingerofdoom · 18/08/2011 15:37

Thanks for the replies. We will just wait and see what happens. What a day!
I'm not really feeling very patient and would just like everything finalised. Frayed nerves I'm afraid.

Yellowstone · 18/08/2011 15:49

harbinger does your DD mind very much which college it is? Is it for a college based subject? We've now heard of a few people who didn't make the grade and haven't been tweaked a place, so my DD is increasingly grateful.

harbingerofdoom · 18/08/2011 15:55

She really liked the college that she stayed in for the interviews. Probably doesn't mind too much. It's the not knowing that seems to be the main problem.
Insignificant,I know, when you look at the bigger picture ie IN.

mumoverseas · 18/08/2011 15:56

webwiz fab news Grin
yes, I'm clock watching for fellatio's ds. I'd still beat the living daylights out of him when he got back from holiday though.

Still trying to find out how my nephew got on. His school told him he got AAB which he needed for his firm so he posted on FB he was in and then apparently they said, oh, sorry, got it wrong, it was AAC! Angry

harbinger people seem to get into almost every college with Open Offers, including their original first choice. Try and see it as exciting! Whichever way they get into a college they always seem to end up loving it. DD3 is even looking forward to her classy first year accomodation built above the downtown Sainsbury's on the main road out of town.. Hope your DD hears soon. As you say, she's in. I feel so sorry for those who haven't yet heard back from places they're desperate to go to. Hope he gets the thumbs up from UEA any moment FN.

CrosswordAddict · 18/08/2011 16:20

toffee22 Please don't leave us all in suspense!

funnyperson · 18/08/2011 16:42

Dear all

DD is in to her first choice ie Oxford - GrinGrinGrin she got 3 A as required by the offerShock

DD didn't get up in time to access UCAS before it crashed so she rang them at 7.30 am and her voice was really sweet when she said 'really??' when they said she had gone unconditional. Then her phone/computer didnt stop till we went to school and hasn't stopped since. The three generations have danced around the houses and been to the celebration meal (which grandad had said he wasnt going to unless DD got in as he is very frail and can hardly walk now even with sticks so its a big deal a very big deal, but for years he drove DD to school everyday, and gave her her tea).

We have all and toasted DD health in water !!!! There was the most lovely welcome email from Wadham welcoming her to Oxford!!!!!!

DS has passed his driving test just now so thats a good day all round.

At DD school all her friends have made their Oxford offers including her Magdalen College friend going to study English.

But one very sad highly intelligent hardworking girl who had a three A star offer from Cambridge ( I kid you not) 'only' got 1A star and 3 A and was in tears as she didn't make her offer. Cambridge lost another that way in DD year too. Their loss. I think 3 A star offers should be banned.

Anyway my nephew and my neighbour's cleaners son both got 3 A star 1A and are in to Imperial College London to read physics!

Anyway we have now accessed track and it is really true and we are so relieved I cannot tell you and I am sorry to say that I have been in tears with relief and also - happiness! DD is growing up and has a good start in life and I can ask for nothing more.

Also we went through an hour or so of tears at about 9 ish because DD though maybe we were treating her like an object - only loved her because she did what was expected etc but now she has settled down and knows thats not so and is enjoying the moment and her welcome pack !!!!!!!!!

Trying to work out what happened to everyone else on here

fishtankbrain · 18/08/2011 16:46

funnyperson your DD is going to have a great time - I went to Wadham and it is a fantastic place. Very happy memories and plenty of lifetime friends from my three years there. And a DH!

mumofsoontobelawstudent · 18/08/2011 16:47

funnyperson well done to your dd.
I agree, 3 x A* is so unfair Sad

fellatio update? can't keep fingers crossed all day Grin

Yellowstone · 18/08/2011 16:49

funnyperson I'm so glad to hear your DD is in, I've been quietly rooting for her but I'm biased!

My DD is into Magdalen for Law.

webwiz · 18/08/2011 16:54

Its been an emotional day for all funnyperson - well done to your DD.

DD2 was in tears at missing her offer which was awful to watch and then in tears again when she found out she was actually in. Is it time for Wine yet?

deloreshunchfront · 18/08/2011 16:55

Just wanted to say how useful I've found this thread, my DD has just done her AS so another year to go, but shall have better understanding of system then.

Results not as good as she thought, but OK, needs to get her act together now for A2.
She's gone off to inbetweeners, I'm counting down till pointless whilst eyeing the sherry bottle.

mumofsoontobelawstudent · 18/08/2011 16:57

yes Wine all round! cheers! x

adamschic · 18/08/2011 16:57

I haven't had chance to read the thread but will do so when I am at work less busy. Just been out for a fabulously expensive lunch. Not exactly celebrating DD's As results, they weren't great but they weren't that bad. She will be going into year 13 but will need a couple of resits and lots of hard work and the option of repeating 13, if necessary.

Well done to all your DC's. Scanning the thread I can see that most got what/where they wanted.

funnyperson · 18/08/2011 17:00

Have read through now- well done Ponders/missdisorganised /yellowstone harbinger/mumoverseas/mumofsoontobelawstudent

Fellatio- Reading is a really really nice university and town to live in with excellent student accommodation and nice looking students and a great campus -I know as I have driven past it everyday for the last three months and I looked it up last week- it had no places in clearing and has an excellent employment outcome- so is a very good choice indeed to have confirmed. Relax. Better than Essex or Kent.

Pag what happened to yours?

MABS · 18/08/2011 17:02

so pleased Funnyperson

funnyperson · 18/08/2011 17:09

Thank you fishtankbrain, webwiz, yellowstone. Mumsnet threads have really really helped me through all this-keeping a sane perspective

Fellatio- I mean it about Reading- I am not just saying it to make you feel good- The academics there are solid and your DS will be happy there- it is much much better than say all the midland universities though I would say that as I am a Southerner- there is a lot of IT and business relocation to Reading, so a lot of families and it is a very pleasant safe town and the university has an excellent name and good research and sandwich partnerships. It is forward looking.

mumofsoontobelawstudent · 18/08/2011 17:11

funnyperson think I read that Pag's DS got into Exeter, same as my DS Wink

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 17:14

Right then.Have just got off the phone to DS. UEA had him phone back twice in the end, but sadly it is a no-go. Sad

I'm not that surprised TBH, they have virtually nothing on clearing, and certainly nothing that was in arts and humanities. Those departments for his subject choices are very strong, so I guess they had lots of straight A students on insurance places who didn't quite make Warwick or Durham!

I can hear in his voice that he is really gutted. But I don't want him to be - he has a very credible set of results, and a firm place at Reading which is a good strong well-established uni. Once he gets his head around being somewhere other than where he visualised himself, it will all be fine, and he will love it. I am very proud of him.

Well done everyone, however it turned out for you, things usually work out for the best one way or another. Thank you for keeping me sane today and all the great advice. Pour yourselves a drink now!

webwiz · 18/08/2011 17:15

This was my second time through as well Corvax and two years ago with DD1 was nowhere near as bad. I'm glad DS is only 14 so we have a bit of a breather before the exam treadmill starts again.

RustyBear · 18/08/2011 17:16

Yes, Pag's DS is going to Exeter 'probably the best university in the world' as they say.

mos - I asked DD if she had any tips for Exeter students. and she said tell them to make sure they start looking for their second year accommodation early enough! Sounds daft, but she booked hers by November in order to get a decent house, and it's going to be tougher in future as Exeter Council are trying to put a block on new multiple-occupancy lettings in areas where there are large numbers of students - ie those near the university.
