A Level Anxiety

Toffee22 · 14/08/2011 22:42

Only 4 more "sleeps" until the A level results come out - not that I will be doing much sleeping...

Eldest son wants to study medicine. 3 "A's" required no slip ups allowed. Have just checked and most medical schools don't accept re-sits. How can I face looking at the cold hard facts at some point on Thursday. I'm sure it will be difficult for my son too! When I tried to talk to him about it today instead of a response he said he would do an "impression of a tree". It wasn't even a very good impression. What does this mean?

A little ditty to lighten the mood a bit:- DS received a text from his friend ..."Dude, you coming to the pub?" to which DS replied "Yeah Dude, let's go and celebrate!". Turns out "DUDE" was not in fact a salutation but said friend's grades!! Grin

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 13:59

Yes, there are lots of places at Kent and Essex, bith pretty good but not what he'd set his heart on. Still - there are far worse options. Also saw Liverpool as well but wondered if the grade requirements would be higher there?

Anway, he like Reading so perhaps all is not lost...

RoseC · 18/08/2011 13:59

He definitely has a place at Reading - congratulations! He has to manually accept this offer. If UEA say, at 4pm, that he has a place then he can stay at UEA. Leave the Reading offer hanging until you hear from UEA.

I'm not sure about the technicalities but he may have to do what I did and call Reading personally to decline as they may have to release him from their unconditional offer for UEA to claim him.

RoseC · 18/08/2011 14:02

Sorry, I mean 'you can' leave the Reading offer hanging. Didn't mean to get dictatorial, I was trying to type quickly Blush

lostmymind · 18/08/2011 14:03

jugglingwiththreeshoes - thanks Smile

BCBG - Specific to Cambridge, perhaps speak with one of the admissions tutors and see what their advice might be. I take it your DS is due to start his A2 year? I'd be inclined to agree with him re the value of Further Maths for Vetmed, have a search through the vet schools entry requirements to get an overview. And - with no disrespect to thos attending C'bridge, there are other excellent vetmeds out there - Edinburgh, Liverpool, RVC. Look here for more info www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/Veterinary_Medicine

Of God, tahnk you so much Rose. I've just tired to ring him but he's engaged - trying to speak to Essex and Kent. Confused

I need to lay down. I really need gin.

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 14:04

so many typos. Sorry I can't think straight for stress!

carpwidow · 18/08/2011 14:06

Fellatio How's his holiday going? I hope he thanks you for all this. Good luck this afternoon. Hope all works out. Here's a cuppa for you Brew

eatyourveg · 18/08/2011 14:10

Is resitting a unit really frowned upon? Is there some sort of list like the "preferred subjects" list where you can see which unis don't accept unit resits and which ones don't care?

Scarfmaker · 18/08/2011 14:12

My lovely 18 year old son has just passed his A levels - getting 3 A's.

Both myself and husband didn't go to college or uni so we are so proud of him!

He couldn't get his results until 10.30 at college this morning but received a letter in post early congratulating on a place at his uni - King's College, London. The letter didn't actually state his grades though and I was a bit nervous until he'd actually got those.

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 14:12

Ok, just spoken to him, and he is relieved and delighted to be in at Reading, but still wants to hang on for UEA. Will keep you posted.

Thank fuck I have another two years before I have to go through this again. Shock

(sorry for swearing and ranting too much on this thread. Especially sorry to the Quaker lady. Blush)

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 14:14

that's wonderful Scarf - you must be so proud! and the same goes to everyone else I haven't managed to mention upthread also - I am a bit distracted at the mo. Grin

He is finally sounding like he understands why I was a bit narked carpwidow Grin

jugglingwiththreeshoes · 18/08/2011 14:22

That's OK FellNel - We're not all as strict and serious as the guy on the Quaker Oats packet you know Grin
Very pleased for you that your DS has a good place ! Hope he has a wonderful time whichever of the two he ends up at by the end of today !

drcrab · 18/08/2011 14:22

Fellatio - he can wait till 4pm, and get them to say aye/nye ASAP. If yes, then great. If no, then get released from them, accept Reading.

MidnightHag · 18/08/2011 14:29

Toffee How did your DS do?

harbingerofdoom · 18/08/2011 14:30

Right,we've just managed to look at Track now UCAS is working but it has not been updated. What does this mean?
Worried now, they do have to stand by their offers don't they?

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 14:36

harbinger are you just looking at the first page or have you clicked to go onto 'choices'?

RoseC · 18/08/2011 14:36

harbinger - they do. If your DC got the grades required then they have a place. If the university have oversubscribed the course then that's their problem. They have to give places to everyone who met their offer and accepted. They may also have been having admin problems accessing track/getting UCAS to change track.

Ponders · 18/08/2011 14:37

blimey, what a rollercoaster today - can't keep track of all the results but congratulations to all who got what they needed & commiserations to those who didn't esp if not sorted out yet Smile

harbinger, I would guess it's just an IT overload at UCAS. are you waiting for allocation of a college? is there a general admissions number at Oxford you can ring?

harbingerofdoom · 18/08/2011 14:57

UCAS doesn't say 'congratulations bla bla bla'. I think it is probably a problem with UCAS as the Colleges have had the results since Monday I believe.
Just wanted to reassure myself and DD that the offer stands and that as she has met the offer will get a place.

Yellowstone · 18/08/2011 15:01

harbinger DD's track updated a while ago but hers was an offer from a specific college. Oxford has to honour all Open Offers but at the moment I imagine there are phone calls going on to finalise who best fits where. There have been some very strange results, especially that OCR Philosophy that mumoverseas was talking about. I'd leave it a while, it'll all work out.

Yellowstone · 18/08/2011 15:04

harbinger the university has had the results since Monday but today is when the schools make their case, which may alter the dynamics.

snorkie · 18/08/2011 15:06

harbinger, if it's an open offer they may want to wait until the last minute before allocating the college to be sure they know where the spaces are. But it will happen Smile.
