A Level Anxiety

Toffee22 · 14/08/2011 22:42

Only 4 more "sleeps" until the A level results come out - not that I will be doing much sleeping...

Eldest son wants to study medicine. 3 "A's" required no slip ups allowed. Have just checked and most medical schools don't accept re-sits. How can I face looking at the cold hard facts at some point on Thursday. I'm sure it will be difficult for my son too! When I tried to talk to him about it today instead of a response he said he would do an "impression of a tree". It wasn't even a very good impression. What does this mean?

OP posts:
ellisbell · 18/08/2011 11:02

pretty happy with the results, everything they needed and a bit more :)

larry5 · 18/08/2011 11:11

congratulations and best wishes to all who got what they wanted and particularly to misdisorganised. I have read your story on here and know how hard it has been for you.

To those who haven't yet had places confirmed dd dropped a grade last year and it took 36 hours for her first choice uni to consider her case but she did end up at her first choice. It was the longest 36 hours in her life.

Don't give up hope.

duchesse · 18/08/2011 11:14

Thanks for the words of reassurance Larry but it's less likely to happen this year of all years...

missmiss · 18/08/2011 11:14

Wow, stressedmum, that's brilliant! Well done your DD. where's she off to?

sieglinde · 18/08/2011 11:44

Lots of love to all and hugs for any enduring delays but especially yippees to stressedmum and misdisorganised :). Aye, any word?

mumoverseas · 18/08/2011 11:51

congratulations everyone, particularly missdisorganised, well done, your parents would be so proud of you x

Just back from DS's college, he got AAAB and and A in his extended project (whatever that is) but he is miffed as he missed an A* by 1 mark I think he should just be relieved he is in his first choice, quite a few of his friends didn't get it

Anyone's DC do philosophy? Apparently DC's school is asking for everyone's paper to be remarked as they all did really badly. Some of DS's friends predicted A* but got B's and lost places Sad

mrswoodentop · 18/08/2011 12:02

Well done to all ,MOS whish board is the philosophy,ds1 has done the AS and I am not confident,he has gone to get the result now

mumoverseas · 18/08/2011 12:07

mrswoodentop sorry not entirely sure although DS says 'maybe' OCR. A bit odd that they are asking for all to be re-marked.

MidnightHag · 18/08/2011 12:08

What happened to the OP's son? Did I miss her post?

Theas18 · 18/08/2011 12:12

Missdisorganised- hugest congratulations and a big hug from me! Your parents would have been so proud - they can't be here so you have collective mumsnet proundness instead. A poor substitute I know but we are all so proud of you- I'm a recent MN member but I've read a bit about you.

Biggest girl did extremely well A A A plus A* in EPQ and 120/120 in the performance part of her music.

She's off to Nottingham :-). will miss her dreadfully.

duchesse · 18/08/2011 12:12

bugger

duchesse · 18/08/2011 12:13

BCD- won't even make 2nd choice. oh dear oh dear.

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 12:14

Confused OK I'm back. God, what a bloody nightmare!

Track still down.

Picked up his results for him and he has missed one subject by one grade.

He has spoken to the admissions people who have said they may still take him but they cannot say for sure until they have heard from anyone who wants to take up their insurance place at UEA and has hit their grades, as they are obliged to offer to them first. He has to phone back after 4pm.

Overall he has done pretty well, but not well enough to put an end to my stress yet!

RoseC · 18/08/2011 12:18

How far off his second choice was he duchesse? It's always worth ringing the university. I'd also suggest, if he's still at school, speaking to his head of year/other teacher who may be able to recommend a university or be able to stand behind him when he calls the second choice in case a word from them about how hard he's worked/how able he is would help?

Whilst he's doing that you could look through clearing - it's worth asking which course he feels he could compromise on, e.g. if he was doing English, would he consider English + something? Then he might be able to transfer to 'pure' English during his first year, grades permitting, as I explained up thread to Fellatio.

RoseC · 18/08/2011 12:20

Fingers crossed for you Fellatio. They may offer him a place on a similar course instead - DSis, for example, was offered Maths+Education when she had her first stab at UCAS. She decided to hold out for Maths only and resat modules whilst working. I appreciate that she didn't have fee increases to worry about.

duchesse · 18/08/2011 12:20

The school say it's worth ringing but I'm not hopeful this year with the fees increase. He was predicted ABC, has dropped a grade in each. His 1st choice was Cardiff (ABB offer), 2nd Loughborough (BBB) so he's quite some way even for Loughborough.

GnomeDePlume · 18/08/2011 12:22

A little happy dance here

DD1 got an A (taking only one subject out of sequence in year 10). She didnt realise results were out today, thought she would be picking them up next week with the halfway GCSEs. Such is the insouciance of youth.

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 12:25

I'm now spitting that I let him turn down BBB at Birmingham as insurance! Should have put my foot down more! Silly boy.

sieglinde · 18/08/2011 12:27

Fell, duchesse, hope negotiations lead to something. Always worth trying - don't give up!

FellatioNelson · 18/08/2011 12:29

I've just managed to log in to Track and it says:

current status: You have accepted an offer.

what the frig does that mean? No reference to which offer. Confused

when I click on choices it just goes blank. I'm going to be breaking out the vodka soon if this goes on for much longer.

nickschick · 18/08/2011 12:31

Blush ive just had to google the word 'insouciance'- gnomedeplume Grin.

Ds just managed to get on tracker and has accepted his uni im so pleased for him Smile.

gailpottertilsleyplatt · 18/08/2011 12:33

What do you mean, FellNel, "let him turn down"? Isn't it his decision?

duchesse · 18/08/2011 12:35

Honestly Gail, some 17-18 yo are still children and need a lot of guidance. Mine's a case in point.

Mabelface · 18/08/2011 12:35

DS1 has got the grades he needs and more and has his uni place confirmed. Off to Manchester to study music production. Grin

jugglingwiththreeshoes · 18/08/2011 12:35

Fingers crossed for you both, FellNel.
