Tripp trapp vs antilop

I have read through the discussions on here and understand that these are the best highchairs around for having your child up at the table with you, but would like some clarification.

I am in the fortunate position to be able to afford the Tripp trapp (from eBay!!) but also hate wasting money. Please could someone tell me what is so much better about the Tripp trapp??

So far I have that it looks better.

Is that it? Should I fork out or just grab an antilop?
Please help!!

Get a BabyDan Tripp Trapp look alike. We had the antilop after a giant chicco nightmare highchair that was impossible to clean and just ugly. Antilop is deffo easy to clean, and it has its fans, but I was less than impressed. The harness is useless and my ds would just climb out which was obviously not ideal. We bought the babydan and he's 2.6 now and adores his chair. dd is 6 and still sits in it too

Antilop gets my vote.

I did use it for too long and had a worrying moment where DS had wedged both legs into one leg hole. He popped out just before I was considering getting the oil out - put it up in the loft then.

But to be fair he was more than big enough to sit on a normal chair by then. I just liked it so much I kept using it.

TT are fantastic. DDs (5&10) still use theirs at the table and friends fight to sit on them when over for tea. Also a suprisingly comfortable seat for adults too. Can see them being a part of our family for many years to come Grin

I have both. We bought the Tripp Trapp for dd (dc1). I like it, love how it looks, have had no real problems with it except we found it was a bit of a pain to get her in and out of the baby seat (she had chubby little legs Smile) and she never really sat very well in it until around 8 months. She is 3.8 now and still uses it.

We bought the Antilop for ds (another chubby baby and didn't want the same issues) and I think it is fantastic. Its much easier to get him in and out of than the TT. It doesn't perhaps look quite as nice but I don't have a problem with how it looks - it just looks more of a highchair iyswim. Its also easier to pop in the boot of the car if we're going to visit someone who doesn't have a highchair. I however, don't think he'll still be sitting in it at 3.8 (and beyond)..

If I had my time again, I think I'd just have bought the Antilop ...

My ds will not stay in the Tripp trapp, he spends so much time trying to escape and getting cross that hehas to be strapped in with a harness that he doesn't eat anything. I keep getting the Tripp trapp out and 3 days later putting it away and getting out the antilop.

It's because if the footrest, it gives him too much leverage, and I novel it down but he just uses the bar instead and keeps on trying to stand up and climb out

ricketyrock · 14/01/2011 11:45

OK Aitch thanks for that I didn't realise

I am now worrying about whether my DD will
have chubby legs or not and whether she will be a wriggler. Which is ridiculous (though if I were to predict she won't have v chubby legs and she will be a wriggler)

So Baroness Bom makes a very good point. Though I might do it in reverse and get the A and if I don't get on with it I've only spent 15 quid.

Actually one more thing- she is very long. very long. Will this make a difference?!

FanellaFidge · 14/01/2011 12:32

Antilop. I came on about 18months ago with the same question and Mumsnet convinced me to get the antilop. It really is brill, easiest highchair to clean which is a massive plus.

FanellaFidge · 14/01/2011 12:33

My DS is very long and he's fine Smile

ChippingIn · 14/01/2011 13:48

Rickety - you summed it up quite well. The antilop is fine if you are after something cheap and cheerful that you will only use for a short while, then you will probably have to buy some kind of booster seat. If you have the money to buy the TT you have a chair for life :)

Long is fine in either, a little chunky is better in the TT.

(I wouldn't buy the BabyDan, they're smaller so defeat part of the reason you'd buy one that style IMO.)

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 14/01/2011 13:56

Get a babydan and an antilop for the same price as a TT.

I have my antilop in the kitchen and babydan at the dining table and use both - antilop if it's just her eating, babydan if all of us are. The plan is to phase out the antilop as she gets bigger.

I love both, but the antilop has been great for the past 6 months (she is almost a year). Can see the babydan getting more use as she gets older.

And the babydan is miles cheaper than the TT. And i think it looks nicer, but anyway, it does the same thing.

OP I'm also looking for a highchair and have sadly decided to kiss my dreams of tasteful furniture goodbye- I wanted a tt but YouTube clip of tipping tots put me off, my ds is given to pushing off me at the best of times, I do not want him to smash his head on my hard stone floor! Think it's a swizz to pay even more for something to make the chair safe (& I can afford it, just don't want to be a mug). Have decided to try the antilop, if I don't like it it can go to the GPs.

castleonthehill · 22/01/2011 19:37

I have two trip traps but then bought the Antilop to go camping as you can take the legs off it is very good as you don't need to find a chair to strap it to great for going visiting people. Draw backs are no foot rest so child legs hang so not very comfy and not a harness so can climb out.

I have always found (I was a nanny) that children sit better and for longer if they are at the right high to be comfy so we bought

ANTILOP and use until confidently walking and able to climb in to a trip trap
trip trap without the baby set for at home use the antilop until they are big enough to use.

kaboost while out

The antilop is good for getting you over the messy baby stage
The trip trap is good for long meals with your older toddler, preschooler and your school age child doing homework.

The Kaboost is good for making sure they are comfy while you are out.

WorzselMummage · 22/01/2011 19:45

Antilop!

I don't know if it has been mentioned thus far but you can put the entire thing in the dishwasher, straps still on it!
