Tripp trapp vs antilop

wallababy · 11/01/2011 09:07

I have read through the discussions on here and understand that these are the best highchairs around for having your child up at the table with you, but would like some clarification.

I am in the fortunate position to be able to afford the Tripp trapp (from eBay!!) but also hate wasting money. Please could someone tell me what is so much better about the Tripp trapp??

So far I have that it looks better.

Is that it? Should I fork out or just grab an antilop?
Please help!!

tripp trapp. its fantastic. My DD loves it. She has always loved being part of everything and the tripp trapp allows her to feel like a big girl sitting directly at the table with us. We bought it and started using it when she was 5 months (she sat by herself by then).

Wouldn't have wanted any other type of chair.

I find it very easy to keep clean too.

Am pregnant again and will certainly be buying another tripp trapp for DC2.

HTH

I'm a huge antilop fan, there's simply nothing I don't like about it - I even like the look of it, just because it's so...minimal and unpretentious! Easy to take apart, has a tray if you want it, inflatable insert, easy to clean etc etc, you know the rest.

The Tripp trapp is lush but reeeeally expensive!

mistressploppy · 11/01/2011 09:19

Sorry, just realised how singularly unhelpful that was Blush

wallababy · 11/01/2011 09:32

Mistress, actually very helpful as there are no drawbacks about the antilop, so seems it might just be looks.

Would you have a Tripp trapp if you could?

Nope Grin - I could have had a Tripp trapp but chose the Antilop. I suppose the Tripp trapp does 'grow with the child' but to be honest I've never really cared about that much - when 14mo DS grows out of the antilop he'll go on a normal chair with a booster (much more 'normal', I reckon, than having a special chair)

BUT each to their own, aesthetics was just not a factor for me, and there may be other benefits to the Tripp trapp of which I'm unaware, hopefully someone will come along and tell us!

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 11/01/2011 13:27

I love the antilop the only draw back, area for potential improvement would be a foot rest.

DD2 now has a differnt booster chair from ikea (agin fantastic design and cost about £30 (there were cheaper ones) and dd3 is in the antilop.

So much cheaper.

wallababy · 11/01/2011 14:15

Looks like the antilop is winning it at the moment....

I was just about to post the very same question! The antilop looks like it takes up a lot of room - the legs look quite far apart.

There must be some deciding factor!

wallababy, from what I can gather the stokke's on ebay go for marginally less than the cost new. So at least with a Stokke you can sell it on.

littleomar · 13/01/2011 21:59

tripp traps are a PITA to clean/adjust - the whole thing falls apart (IF you can find the key in the first place).

i don't know anyone who's carried on using it beyond high chair age.

they are also useless if you have a round table (that's not their fault admittedly).

get an antilop and spend the massive difference on something better!

ricketyrock · 13/01/2011 22:00

I do have a round table! Thanks littleomar. something better like new shoes for me you mean?!

VinoEsmeralda · 13/01/2011 22:00

We had the TT and sold it after a month as DS managed to push himself off against the table and topple backwards resulting a trip to E&A for a cut to his head.

Remember the sales lady saying it was the Rolls Royce under the highchairs and it couldnt fall over.....

We replaced it with a similar highchair but with an A frame as opposed to a Z frame, more stable, 3rd of the price but not as good looking and same quality as the Stokke.

The other thing I found very annoying, but this might be just me, was that I kept tripping over the legs and hurting my big toe, probalby why its called 'trip trap' Grin

ricketyrock · 13/01/2011 22:06

So the TT was a bit of a health hazard for your family Vino

whats the name of the one you got?

stressheaderic · 13/01/2011 22:11

We got an Antilop given to us when DD was 6 months just to tide us over while we researched 'proper' high chairs...yep, you've guessed it - still using it now, no new high chair bought. DD is very petite but it suits her fine and she loves it. A doddle to clean and wipes up lovely. Can easily detach the legs and put away in cupboard if having guests over etc.

BoattoBolivia · 13/01/2011 22:14

We had an Ike highchair very like the anti lop for dd 8 years ago and loved it- really easy to clean, using it now for ds and the tRay is the best I have tried for baby led weaning- every highchair I have used in cafes or at parents has been hopeless- either too big or the wrong shape BUT we have had real problems with dd not being able to sit at the table properly, once she was too old for a booster seat. When I went on mat leave this time, I got a lovely John Lewis voucher from collegues, which we spent on trip trapp equivalent . Dd is using it until ds is too big for ikea chair and it has made an enormous difference to how she sits at the table! No putting feet on bar under table and tipping chair. So I think both are great, but if I had to choose, would go for ikea.

VinoEsmeralda · 13/01/2011 22:15

We bought the first one on recommendation of a friend on Tesco and think it was made by Hauck and the 2nd one on Ebay and think but not sure (over 6 years ago)by babyplus. They look identical and both are still in daily use (playroom not kitchen)

neolara · 13/01/2011 22:16

I love my antilop. Wouldn't swop it for a TT if you paid me.

LoopyLoopsIsNoLongerFestive · 13/01/2011 22:19

Antilop without a doubt. I can't understand why anyone would go with anything else.

Amazing for prem/small babies when they start eating, with the inflatable inserts. Dd couldn't fit in any other highchair.

ricketyrock · 13/01/2011 22:19

any thoughts on Babydan v TT?

Stresshead, I don't think my DD is petite she is massive if that makes any difference

Boat, I want a child that has good table manners!

ricketyrock · 13/01/2011 22:20

Neolara, really?!

ricketyrock · 13/01/2011 22:21

Neolara, really?! how come?

ricketyrock · 13/01/2011 22:22

opps technical error I'm not harranging you Neolara

I CAN'T pell either

Habbibu · 13/01/2011 22:22

Antilop is great and also very portable, as the legs go in and out easily. I've never really liked the look of the TT that much. We do have a Handysitt (from ebay!) which is good for sitting at tables. DD has commandeered it atm (she's 4) so ds is still well and truly in his antilop.

Habbibu · 13/01/2011 22:24

dd was in the antilop til she could sit in a chair, and we have no problem with her sitting at the table.

AitchTwoOh · 13/01/2011 22:27

i like both, but i just couldn't make the case for the tripp trapp. it's SO expensive, and according to my pal who has one a pita to clean if the fabric insert is on. the antilop is either clean or dirty, there is no inbetween, no grubbiness. plus, it's light, sometimes after a broccoli blowout i stuck it in the shower and hosed it down. oh, and i also used the ikea one for camping and going out.

changer22 · 13/01/2011 22:27

We have both.

Antilop for babies (functional, easy to clean and transport), Tripp Trapps for big kids.

Save your money for the moment.

A negative on the Tripp Trapps - we are forever bashing our toes on them!
