sazm · 28/01/2011 00:21

aww first thing is its lovely that you want to help,(my in laws all thought it was in my head)
if she has other lo's she would appreciate some peace and quiet, even for half an hour?

maybe you could make a few small meals she could freeze for herself/her other half to save her cooking?

when i had this it was awful,i honestly wanted to curl up and die in the corner i felt so bad,i could hardly walk to the bathroom i was so weak,

good on u xx

grandmaagain · 29/01/2011 17:51

thank you sazm for replying.fortunatly the DD has a wonderful husband who does all of the above better than I can! and it is their first pregnancy after years of trying. I am just finding it so hard to know what to do or say and I am so worried about her health and that of the baby.

OP posts:
sazm · 30/01/2011 01:18

aww thats good,
i had 4 pregnancies all with bad hyperemisis, they always told me the baby would be fine as it takes all its nutrition from mummy,i lost nearly 4 stone (which is fine if you have that extra to loose!)
hope she feels better soon.

grandmaagain · 30/01/2011 22:15

dear sazm you have no idea how good it is to talk to you! how brave you were to go through that 4 times!!! if it is not too personal a question may I ask you how long after the birth did it take you to recover and to be able to eat and drink properly again?

OP posts:
sazm · 30/01/2011 22:29

as soon as i gave birth it was amazing!!
i felt like a new person,my energy levels returned straight away and i felt amazing!!!
i was out shopping the next day and up a ladder wallpapering after a few days (id started decorating then fell pregnant and was too ill to finish it!!!)

sazm · 30/01/2011 22:33

has the doctor tried her on any anti-sickness medication??

the first 3 pregnancies they had little effect on me,but last time i took some and they didnt stop the nausea, but they helped me to keep food down.

if she doesnt fancy taking them...
my mum got me ginger capsules from the local health food shop,i found after i was sick in the morning if i took one with a tiny sip of water then sat still in bed for a 20mins or so til it got into my system i could actually keep my breakfast down!!!

grandmaagain · 31/01/2011 18:45

well done you! and thank you for not minding answering quite a personal question. the DD has a wonderful Doctor who is very good to her unfortunatly she still spent 9 days in hospital on a drip before they found a combination of medication that enabled her to keep any food or more importantly liquid down! even with medication it is touch and go what will stay down.:(

I had severe hyperemesis with both my pregnancies, and with DS2 was on the verge of kidney failure before the hospital got it under control. Is she bed ridden? Do smells make it worse? I found I could only tolerate fresh air, and all synthetic perfumes made me worse. If she's the same, avoid perfume/strong scented shower gels etc. Dehydration is the biggest worry, and also getting taken seriously Hmm. If your DD is very, very ill and unable to speak up for herself with medical staff, perhaps you could do it for her? Too often I was left surrounded by emesis basins and in terrible pain because I didn't have the strength to complain.

grandmaagain · 31/01/2011 19:00

thank you! again the DD has a wonderful husband who is looking after her wonderfully she is a lot better than she was with good days when she can keep things down.fear does makes me exagerate I"m sorry,(blush)

I had severe hyperemesis and ended up in hospital too. A very nice midwife in Dublin told me that unborn babies are greedy and will take all your goodness, even if you can't eat much!
A day after the birth I was cramming in food like mad - it was so amazing to eat and not puke! But even now certain smells can make me feel ill! Even adverts for places like KFC would have me running for 'the toilet.
I would check out non scented shower gel, washing powder etc. My mam and dad also invited my DH for quite a few meals when I couldn't stand the smell of cooking.
There really isn't much you can say except sympathise. You sound like a lovely mam.

grandmaagain · 31/01/2011 19:15

I can"t believe how kind you all are to me it really is a comfort to spill out my worries to you, I had never heard of this distressing condition until now and seeing your child suffer is difficult no matter how old they are!

OP posts:
sazm · 31/01/2011 19:21

i still cant drink blackcurrant juice!!the smell makes me ill,i never buy it for the kids, and i hate when we visit folk as thats always what they ask for as they dont get it at home, but even hours later i can still smell it!!! my kids are neglected lol :)

KenDoddsDadsDog · 31/01/2011 19:47

Ha, mine is mint tea and the smell of baked potatoes.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 31/01/2011 20:35

Flat coke makes me heave. It was the only thing I could drink for weeks Grin Oh, and if one more person had suggested ginger biscuits, I think I might have shoved the packet where the sun don't shine....Wink

Grandmaagain, it is a rare condition so unless you know someone with it you just don't realise how awful it is. You sound like a lovely caring mum, and I really hope that your DD feels better soon :) Not sure if this will help, but you are much less likely to miscarry when you have hyperemesis, and both my sons were huge, bouncing babies :)

grandmaagain · 31/01/2011 21:12

yes it does help Smileand the DD said the same thing about ginger biscuits!!!!!! also it does help to hear of you all on the other side of it (after you had your babies)

OP posts:
ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 31/01/2011 21:16

It is a horrendous condition. I remember feeling trapped in my own body, and the mental distress was as bad as the physical. All I can say is, it was worth it in the end :)

grandmaagain · 31/01/2011 21:55

the DD talks about the boredom as she is unable to work or travel too far and she still has 6 months to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
sazm · 31/01/2011 22:02

aww,my second pregnancy i went back to work for a few months,i think i was about 15 weeks, and really enjoyed it,i only done a couple of hours a day and it was out in the fresh air,i really enjoyed it,

KenDoddsDadsDog · 31/01/2011 22:08

It may sound weird but boredom makes it worse. I worked and felt horrendous most of the time, but as soon as I rested, all I could focus on was feeling sick!
It was horrific up to 22 weeks then got more bearable. Your DD will come through it and have some good days. There are lots of tips that people will give you, but the best one was to graze. No mealtimes, no big meals and eat whatever you can keep down, rather than what's good for you.

sazm · 31/01/2011 22:13

i found that when i fancied a certain thing i could eat it and keep it down,if i ate anything else it came straight back up!
i once had my poor mum out scraping 4 inches of snow off her car at 9pm at night because i wanted pizza!!!!it was the first thing id kept down in about 4 days:)and she didnt care the poor soul, she was just happy id managed to eat something!

grandmaagain · 31/01/2011 22:42

that I can understand!the DD has the dear SIL shopping at all hours! which he does gladly bless him Smile

OP posts:
sazm · 31/01/2011 22:53

haha lol,ha the advantage of 24hr supermarkets now lol!

grandmaagain · 01/02/2011 14:12

so pleased this thread is creating so much discussion we really must make more people aware of this distressing condition especialy some of the health professionals who don"t always take it seriously enough! employers too so they don"t think women are just being lazy or weak when they are unable to work with this awful problem!

OP posts:
KenDoddsDadsDog · 01/02/2011 19:48

There is a good support thread on here too.
Forgot to mention - the smell of peppermint oil did make the constant nausea a bit better.

grandmaagain · 01/02/2011 20:35

yes on the main mumsnet site there is an excellent site the DD told me about.they are very supportive of each other, and were very kind to me when I joined ,I think it is good that grans can have their own site otherwise I think the DDs would have less privacy if we talked openly on their site.
