Gifted and talented

Talk to other parents about parenting a gifted child on this forum.

I'm guilty. I admit it. I sat in a cafe and I judged in a baaaaad way. But I'm not appologising, ignore, go on, don't read, I'm just venting..

Child sitting with it's mother, child was about 5, she's sitting there reading an encyclopedia to it, trying to teach it the correct anatomical names for bones. Child has a paddy, pays no attention at all, granny walks in and sits talking to a person sitting next to her about said child, how bright he is la da da! Child then starts screaming because he wants crisps (despite polishing off a huge cookie), after a few feble attempts at "no, you can't have that" mother gives in and the little darling gets crisps....that he then spills all over the floor, granny in the mean time is still talking about how clever child is. Child then starts screaming when asked to sit down and pulls yet another tantrum.

How many times now? Being clever isn't an excuse to behave like the exorcist!!
There's no point teaching your child the anatomical bone names if they can't behave well enough to leave the house!
That's better.

None that stuck in my head like the CN one did!

MrsMerryHenry · 26/07/2009 23:12

That poor boy, he's so behind, he'll never get anywhere in life. No wonder his mummy was so keen for him to swallow the encyclopedia.

My DS (age 2.9) completed basic and advanced anatomy months ago and has already progressed onto a B.Sc (Hons, of course, darlink) in neurology at Harvard, with an elective year practising his medical Arabic in Yemen. Oxford just wasn't enough of a challenge, you see.

SoccerMum · 26/07/2009 23:13

Paddy = went mental, in a strop kind of way!

bigstripeytiger · 26/07/2009 23:14

MrsMerryHenry

Was he privately educated, or did you slum it in state?

weebump · 26/07/2009 23:17

I've never heard that phrase before, and as an Irish person I take offense. Sorry to pour cold water on your rant, and all.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/07/2009 23:21

Oh, I'm so terribly sorry weebump. I didn't intend to offend. I had no idea, really.

Gasp!! SLUM!!! STATE!!!!

Rodene, darling.

Ahem.

Roedean, darling. He then lectured there for 6 months before moving on to Harvard.

weebump · 26/07/2009 23:26

It's ok, Fluffy. I'm sure it's just one of those phrases that people use without realising.

I'm actually googling it to see if I'm being too touchy. Talk amongst yourselves...

bigstripeytiger · 26/07/2009 23:29

Could it be something to do with paddy fields?

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/07/2009 23:30

Na, Paddy (from when I was a child) used to mean having a temper tantrum.

Why is this is Gifted and Talented?

DadAtLarge · 27/07/2009 09:28

Why is this in Gifted and Talented?

(such a good question, I asked it twice!)

scottishmummy · 27/07/2009 09:51

aha not any child a clinical anatomy expert and crisp eating carb consuming genius

i commend his mother on her bare faced drive and no slacking to get wee gluteus maximus through med school before he is 10.

hell no time to be slacking with hairy maclairy or other dullard books

of course i wouldnt have allowed a cookie, goji berries and organic carrot juice only whilst studying

Swedes · 27/07/2009 10:08

Fluffy
"sitting with it's mother"
"she's sitting there reading an encyclopedia to it"
"...to teach it the correct..."

I'm trying hard not to judge.

scottishmummy · 27/07/2009 10:27

i think this is a laugh out loud AIBU,kind of like the image of pushy mum

now repeat after me P-a-l-a-t-i-n-e
i-n-n-e-r-v-a-t-i-o-n

really, i am lovin this story.i never see anything so interesting when i am out

Katisha · 27/07/2009 10:37

I know a child who is being hothoused by his (its?) parents and who could recite any amount of technical science at you. He is also unfortunmately being turned into a rude little so-and-so who can't interact with children his own age. It's very sad to see.

scottishmummy · 27/07/2009 10:43

one can have rote repetition but that doesnt equate to deep understanding and knowledge.hothousing likely to lead to wilting and obscence amount of pressure

i do wonder what goies on for these wildly competitive paremts and if they are using their child to fulfil their own thwarted ambitions

Katisha · 27/07/2009 10:46

I reckon there is definitely some projection of the parents' own thwarted ambitions going on. I don't understand how they can't see how unpopular and ill equipped for life in general it is making their child, but I think they are so tunnel-visioned about getting him a scholarship somewhere that that's all they care about.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 27/07/2009 11:03

My own son is G&T but there's no way in hell I'd allow him to sit in a cafe and read an encyclopedia to him. I've stuck it in here to show that not all bright children behave well/are naturally a G&T child, especially if they are force fed an encyclopedia by a parent/grandparent that gives in to their every whim. To hothouse a small child in this way is so very wrong, it doesn't make an intelligent child, just a frustrated one. It was wrong on so many levels, fair enough, her son may have been bright but would any parent of a G&T child seriously sit in a cafe with an encyclopedia and teach them the anatomical names for bones at 5 years old? How's this benefiting a child??
