Just had DD's Parent's Evening and her teacher has said she is going to put her in G&T for her reading

I can't write a concerto (which would be talented) or solve quantum theory maths though (which would be talented) .. but I c'n read

It means that she is in the top 10% of readers at her school. My school does not have G&T, but ds gets taken out of class once a week for extended maths with older children, I expect it's something like that. Extention activities to stretch her. NB ds also gets taken out for extra sessions to make him easier to teach (they have got a hope!), so don't assume she is good at everything! Still reading is I think the route to all learning, so well done her.

I haven't assumed she is good at everything. The teacher told me she is the best at everything.

I don't know if you have - the whole NAB / NotABanana thing suddenly occured to me .
Why are people not allowed to feel proud of their kids, and display that feeling??

Yes, why are people not allowed to be proud of intellectual ability?. It's weird, isn't it? It is possible to be a gifted reader when you are young, you know. It is possible for a child's reading ability to be far ahead of their peers. It is possible even as an adult to be an unusually good reader - incredibly fast, excellent comprehension etc.

how do you know if they are gifted? is there a test they can do?

god yes be proud of intellectual ability, be proud that your child has the trick of reading and how much easier absorbing other information will be.. be proud that she's bright

You know what? I have no idea why some people have a problem with a parent being proud of their child. When she told me I got all wet eyed and I came on here to find out more about it as there isn't a lot of time at parent's evening. I am not showing off.

My mother has never in the whole of my life said she was proud of me and I won't apologise for being proud of my daughter.

I think catinthehat might be trying to make the point that I have posted before about her good reading. Remember people, only post once when your child is good at something no matter how many times people ask things that may make it relevant to post about it.

Eh? no, NAB, my comment was to do with Twig's (since expanded) point , where you appeared to be slapped for being proud of yr daughter. I'm really not familiar with your situation so wouldn't know if you had posted before. (Though not a problem if you had, imo).
