International Mathematics Olympiad on BB2 yesterday

Did anybody watch this about the young mathematical geniuses who were competing to represent GB at the IMO? These teenagers were exceptionally gifted and on a completely different level to 99.9% of the population.

Being exceptional gifted is very rare and I suspect a lot of children who are now singled out for G&T programmes are in fact just very intelligent.

This programme was an eye opener for me anyway!

Clairwil, Did all 7 mean the IMO (international maths olympiad) though? There's a world of difference between the Olympiads that are effectively the second round of the UKMT maths challenges and IMO. MInd you, I think most IMO applicants go on to do maths at Cambridge (usually Trinity) & presumably all know each other from training camps, so maybe not all that unusual that they might be found in one place on occasion.

Yes, it was at Trinity. And I guess, since each year's team is 6 people and the maths degree is 4 years long (and there might have been grads at the party), the odds are not all that long.

I went to school with someone who won the Olympiad, at least one year.

He was a bit geeky, but certainly not Aspergerish, imo.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/12/2008 07:05

Ah, right. He got the gold, two years running. I used to be pretty good at maths, but never did the Olympiad.
