Has anyone ever asked if their child is G&T on here and been told 'yes'?

just wondering...

My Ds 12 (yr 7) has just been put on the G&T register because of high CAT test scores and will probably be in G&T for science.

If you looked at him as a toddler I would never have been posting on here asking if he was G&T. He didn't speak early, didn't get reading until he was 7. Apart from walking early he wasn't particularly advanced in anything. He was one of the children who developed in leaps rather than gradually. A few days before his 2nd birthday he woke up spouting new words all day.

Also his understanding seemed very advanced even as a baby (did turn out that he was in the top 5% after a TROG test for grammatical reception when he was 5)
But looking at Binks' link he does tick quite a few of the gifted boxes , but not all. He does have a Specific learning difficulty when it comes to writing.

How do you know if they are on the register?
ds is very good at maths. Very proud as he has been given a letter today from school saying his has been identified as being gifted or talented and will qualify to apply ;to take part in the new saturday night bbc1 Junior Master Mind Meets an intellectual and fun Gladiators style show? The letter reads to say children have to be extremely bright and maybe on the g and t register or a menber of MENSA. Very proud anyway lol and will keep letter forever

roisin - what you say (& your school's/dh's differing views too) strikes a chord.

My two's traits fit very neatly in those columns - dd in highly able & ds in the other - but as they get older, and as efficient processing of language (as the medium for learning) gets more & more important, dd's conventionally "bright" all-round competence is doing her much more favours than ds's flashes of lateral inspiration are doing him.

I think my point here is that the distinction is often made as "giftedness versus 'just' bright" - whereas in reality "'just' bright" is a very nice promising place to be.

(PS random thing: ds and dd, with their so very different braininess profiles, are only a few points apart IQ wise. Which is sort of interesting.)

Bink and Roisin, I've had similar experiences in my family also. I've had a couple family members who have been straight A students and the top X% of a very respected Grammar School. Living in a very nice middle class area where it was good to be clever they had no problems, academic or socially.

Other members have had some odd spark but not always shone as children or at school but later have done very very well. One whilst not being gifted, is very talented but the kind that only matures as an adult.

One of my own children was often commented on as a young child and had lots of isn't he clever comments. However he's had problems raised with him at school and certainly not at the top of the class.

My own experiences are what prompted my reply, not to get at people or put them down. But maybe to suggest when everybody doesn't rush to say yes your young child is G&T then maybe it's down to caution rather than resentment. If it wasn't for my family background I would've been fully expecting my own child to be bored at school and looking for a more academic pre-school.

Some children shine early and will remain that way, some may shine early then whilst keeping their own talents fade into the background school wise. Some will seem slow but then surprise everybody. Which is behind my "list" comments.

DS got told he was on the register by his french teacher who is in charge of G&T. He was told there would be a G&T club opening up after half term and he could join it.

Thanks Christywhisty, was curious, not really heard about it before. I suppose they would have told me if he was on it. But getting that letter was lovely.

roisin · 13/10/2007 10:44

Bink - I wouldn't actually know how dss compare on IQ, as ds2 has never had a formal test.

DS2 would be slightly better on spatial stuff, but ds1 would be (I think) heaps better on anything using active/passive, simply because ds2 has done far less reading than ds1. (Seems back on track now though thanks to good old EB! But that's another thread.)

The school did some kind of IQ test with them in yr3, but I've never seen the results.

Cloesmumtoo

I think the letter was telling you that he is on the register.

I think that part of the reason that people don't get told on mn that their loveley toddler is 'gifted' is that often the things that the child is doing are notreliable indicators of giftedness in later life.

So first time parents will naturally be rather chuffed that their 18 month old child is 'counting' and will, understandably wonder if this means they have a genius on their hands.

People who have been at the parenting biz for longer may well know that most early 'counting' is actually just chanting words, rather than true understanding of the meaning of number.

And often the things that the children are doing, while very exciting for the parent are, in fact, well within the bounds of normal.

desi, re emotional intellegence. I agree with you 100%

I teach a boy who is soooooooooooooooo 'gifted' in this regard. He is utterly fab. One of the kindest and most mature children I have ever worked with. He is not on any regester for G and t, but he really is quite an exceptional chap.
