help needed with G+T 3 yearold

I rarely post on this topic as it seems to cause so much derision, but my nearly 3 year old dd ( who is G+T) is driving me bonkers, I struggle to answer her incessant questions , particularly as I have never wanted to fob my children off with fantasy answers, e.g. why do flowers bloom mummy..( recent question) easy answer would have been "the fairies make it happen" , does anyone know of a children's encyclopedia type book I could use which would help me with sensible but child friendly answers. I am reasonably intelligent ( as is DH) but why do flowers bloom and how does the sky stay up have got me stumped as to how to explain them.

Sorry. Not sure. But be careful. Ds asked dh why the sky was blue. Dh told him. And how. Ds looked at him and said, "Daddy, that was too much information"

NAB3 · 01/08/2007 15:47

Why is the sky blue??

ChipButty · 01/08/2007 15:49

Because it is. Now get on with your dinner! Tee hee! x

NAB3 · 01/08/2007 15:52
Grin
meandmyflyingmachine · 01/08/2007 15:52

Dunno. Wasn't listening

Whizzz · 01/08/2007 15:54

BLimey, do they classify G&T as early as 3 !?!
how about something like this ?? or some of the others on there

Whizzz · 01/08/2007 15:55

and why the sky is blue

meandmyflyingmachine · 01/08/2007 15:55

Oh - please say 'gifted', not G&T. Unless she is both...

Piggy · 01/08/2007 15:57

Those are the kind of questions that ds1 asks me. Except he's 2.9. Does that mean he's extra specially G&T.

Twiglett · 01/08/2007 15:58

oh they're pretty typical kiddy style questions

don't you love them?

my kids ask things like that and they're pig as thick shit

oliveoil · 01/08/2007 15:58

the questions sound normal to me, not necessarily G&T

but anyway

I just usually fob my way through things and give basic answers tbh

or look it up on the internet

Flowers bloom to attract bees to eat the nectar, which the bees use to make honey.

aloha · 01/08/2007 16:00

Would anyone say rubbish like 'the fairies make it happen'?
I think questions like this are perfectly normal in young children actually, and are not really a sign of super-intelligence.
Why do flowers bloom? Well, plants produce bright coloured and scented flowers to help them reproduce. The colour and scent attracts insects who will help move pollen from one part of the flower to another, so it can make a seed so more flowers will grow. (anthers to stigma - I've just found on google) Google is fantastic. There are also loads of children encylopaedias - some have been recommended on MN, or you could pop into a children's bookshop with your dd.
The sky isn't really up - it is the air we which is all around us. The gasses that make up the air are held close to the earth by gravity which is a special kind of pull which the earth has (everything has gravity, but the bigger the object the more gravity it has).
Children ask a million questions a day. 'I don't know, let's find out' is a perfectly good answer.

thankyou - book looks ideal whizz, and chip i do sometimes say " just because" as i just get frazzled by her constant stream of questions/conversation. I hate the term G+T but don't really know what else to use, we do not label her at home or nursery, and i do know that she may well "even out" in time when her peers may catch up. It all started when she was 2 when the HV commented how advanced she was ( we had thought this but just put it down to being proud parents) she was assessed by an Edpsych ( I was reluctant but Dh pushed for it) and she has an IQ ( how do they assess that in kids ?) of 141.

Should point out that ds is neither gifted nor talented.

Which is probably why it was too much information...

mummydoc · 01/08/2007 16:03

some of the comments made below is why i so very rarely post on here...

I've learned a lot from my ds as it happens. The kids teach you a lot with perceptive questions. I am now quite well informed about what happened to the Parliamentarians after the Restoration thanks to ds (5) and about the causes of the Vietnam war, thanks to dsd (15).
I've learned a lot of science that makes my head hurt, frankly.

gess · 01/08/2007 16:05

IQ in kids is assessed by building blocks etc (have seen them trying to adminster one to ds1 and failing). Copying patterns etc. Not sure what the actual difference between an IQ of say 120 and 140 would be. These are all normal kiddy question so just answer them as you would you hadn't been told she was gifted (ie google). The only questions I struggle with are the god ones tbh. DS2 has discovered god since starting at a christian school and we get all sorts of very odd questions that being atheist I have no idea how to answer.

Was the Ed psych an LEA one or did you pay for it? (Just curious; often long waits for ed psychs)

aloha · 01/08/2007 16:06

And I completely stand by my assertion that these are normal questions from children! I think it's a bit odd to put this under G&T.

Theclosetpagan · 01/08/2007 16:06

IQ 141 - wow - that IS high. Am not sure whether to celebrate for you or feel some sympathy as keeping up with her must be hard.

There are lots of child friendly encyclopaedia type books so might be worth looking at those and seeing if you can form a child friendly answer from what you read in those.

meandmyflyingmachine · 01/08/2007 16:07

What comments?

mummydoc · 01/08/2007 16:08

we paid for it, LOL at the comment about god questions, we have similar probs with DD1 ( who is not g+t) who is 7 and at a christian school, i too am an atheist.

OP posts:
aloha · 01/08/2007 16:08

IQ is really almost meaningless though. I was tested and found to have an high IQ as a child but without application, fortitude etc it is not very useful. I'm no millionaire!

Theclosetpagan · 01/08/2007 16:09

Am guessing it went under G+T because that's what the OP was told by the Ed Psych.

aloha · 01/08/2007 16:09

Also, I don't find being an atheist is a problem with answering God questions (not that I get many tbh)
