Entrance Exam tuition?

Just been told that 9 yr old DD is very G&T and should be entered for selective school nearby. Advised, though, that she should have a tutor before sitting entrance exam just to help her prepare. Anyone know how I can find a good tutor? Especially grateful if anyone knows where I can find a good tutor in Orpington?!

Singersgirl, I think you make a good point about how difficult it is to discuss these issues with parents going through the same thing - there's a kind of conspiracy of silence, and it's hard to raise the issue of 'which school?' without risking a ruck about religion, wealth or politics. So although it makes the most sense to pool info locally, especially to help people who are less good at 'playing the system', in actual fact it's quite awkward doing so, and people are forced to plough their own furrow.

They're supposed to burn out if they have tutoring for too long - or worse, see learning as drudgery which puts them off for life.

I think the general advice is start in the middle of Year 5, as stated below. The grammars round here used to say 'don't tutor', and they still say 'don't tutor if the child won't be able to keep up once they're at the school'.

Apsmum - I tutor several children from Queens School. They don't prepare Yr6 for independent schools as they are a state school.

Hello, can anyone who lives in south east London help? I need a tutor for my daughter to help with selective school entrance and have no idea where to look. I know (from reading mumsnet!) that most people do tutor, but where do you find these mysterious people? Looked at some agencies on the net but wasn't convinced ... I'm in Dulwich so any help with tutors in this area much much appreciated

YOu want someone who has coached for exams for the school that they're going to. Sometimes you can find a teacher at that school. You want someone who has coached others into the school you're after. I suppose when we have ever done this we've asked around. Even call the schools you're going for perhaps or ask mothers in the playground there who coached their children.

Have you tried extra tuition centre? They are based in east London. I think they have various centres so perhaps one is near you.

Also, consider going down the 'do it yourself' route. There are lots of free 11+ practice papers out there. A company called chukra is trying to make the test fairer by releasing all their 11 plus questions for free. The headteacher at our school recommended the site and I must say that my son has improved his scores a lot since doing their tests.

Good luck. My son takes his exam in October so fingers crossed he can keep up his current form!

when we were doing the rounds of open days last year for 10+ entry I asked the schools if we should be tutoring him - they all said not to, as the exams were designed to test a child's potential and they much preferred to be able to look at a child in the raw as it were - they also said they marked papers from state school and prep school kids differently as they realised the prep school kids would have had much more coaching

we took them at their word and it seemed to work as ds got offered places and a scholarship at his preferred school

lonedad2 · 03/10/2007 11:09

thevoice, we did end up going down the tutor route for our ds's 11+. Company called Russell Group Tutors.

I felt exactly the same as others on this topic: I wanted someone trained in how to get children through entrance exams. But the tutor offered by the school was a 'teacher' - not a tutor. ds1 hated coming home to more teaching. RGT - and I think other agencies do this too - gave us a recent Oxford grad who had read all the relevant national curriculum material, and who ds1 was genuinely excited to see each week. Tutor also lived in Wandsworth - so could easily get down your way...

Worth a thought?
