Just interested really, bunch of bespectacled girlie swots that we are on Mumsnet. Were you "G&T" before it was cool?

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 20/05/2006 21:04

I wasnt particually G & T, My reading age was adult when I was 7 though and I took some GCSE's a couple of years early... then I had kids and all the knowledge just disappeared.... Grin

emkana · 20/05/2006 21:04

I sort of was, and then threw it all away by becoming a SAHM! Grin

hunkermonkee · 20/05/2006 21:05

Couldn't possibly say.

Blandmum · 20/05/2006 21:06

WOW, how many people do you think are going to stand up to be tarred and feathered? Grin

Twiglett · 20/05/2006 21:07

I certainly thought I was

but looking back I was probably just precocious Grin

What are the criteria used, or do they vary from school to school?

I'd never heard of this before, find it v. intersting.

God no - appeared clever, being in an unclever year at primary school, and then it all went wrong SadGrin

morningpaper · 20/05/2006 21:07

Precocious/G&T - fine line

OP posts:
puff · 20/05/2006 21:07

No, I don't think I was. Well above "average" - yes.

Apparently an exceptionally talented singer, but then so are loads of people and I just didn't like opera enough to be blaring it out day in day out.

edam · 20/05/2006 21:08

I was certainly a bespectacled swot but not sure that would count as G&T. Grin

Twiglett · 20/05/2006 21:09

I wish I could sing effortlessly and in tune (in an arethra or ella style voice) .. that would be my dream

Twiglett · 20/05/2006 21:09

aretha Blush

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/05/2006 21:10

Well above average at primary - then it all went pear-shaped. So no, not G&T.

FrayedKnot · 20/05/2006 21:10

Could someone explain to me in as few words as possible what all this G&T stuff is about anyway, why do they have it and what qualifies kids to be labelled it?

Then I'll know Wink

expatinscotland · 20/05/2006 21:10

Yes, I was, FWIW. I spoke, read, counted, etc. early.

In the States, it was the way to test into an incredibly academically prestigious secondary school. In my school district, you got into top schools on merit, not where you lived.

I didn't 'throw it all away'. Well, at least I don't like to think like that, it's a pretty negative mindset.

I like to think I'm just a late bloomer, b/c it all works out how it's going to work out eventually, with a little tweak and nudge where and when we feel inclined.

RTKangaMummy · 20/05/2006 21:12

I am deffo NOT GT but DS is

So he has my beauty and DH brains Grin

Cos I am DDG {drop dead georgeous!!!!!!}

fairyjay · 20/05/2006 21:13

Maybe I was until I was 11 - then it all went downhill!!! Grin

morningpaper · 20/05/2006 21:15

Come on admit it ladies

You are always saying you were top of the class - surely the same thing nowadays?

OP posts:
Lact8 · 20/05/2006 21:22

I don't know about G&T but I did the reading/writing v early too.

When I was in 1st year of high school, the school decided i'd been put in the wrong class and moved me up to the top streams for every subject. My parents had a meeting with the Head who told them I was expected to achieve all A's at GCSE, do really well in A levels, choice of university etc etc.

My Dad was really pleased and piled on the pressure for me to do well (making me study on my birthday whilst on holiday during school holidays!!!) My Dad formed a masterplan of what I would do and I felt my life had already been planned out for me.

Needless to say I rebelled, smoked weed and drank all the way through my GCSE's (still passed them but much lower results than had been predicted).

Dropped out of sixth form and ended up on a YT scheme working in shops for £27.50 per week

Not the academic career that had been planned for me at all Smile

Blandmum · 20/05/2006 21:22

Using the current criteria I wasn't at primary, I was in secondary.

Dh's parents were told (while living in the US) to put him in a school for the gifted. He has exceptional A levels but a crap degree and a tested IQ of above 150. He is the most 'normal' guy you could ever wish to meet.

My life in school was hell, and I learned to hide my interest and ability. Once I did , things got getter.

I am still very good at a few things, and there are 101 things that I am totaly crap at

Rhubarb · 20/05/2006 21:23

I am still suffering from my genius today Sad
