Well under GA you'll be able to have a nice little sleep.

:-)

notnowbernard · 08/07/2010 21:03

Ask for as many drugs as they will allow (there and to take home after)

Prepare for swelling and bruising

I had mine out (impacted) under GA - was better than I thought it'd be

JustKeepSwimming · 08/07/2010 21:03

Had mine done years ago now, my main piece of advice is afterwards, even though you don't feel like eating, eat.

The GA can give you a really bad stomach if you don't eat, after i'd been throwing up for a while i rang the hosp up and they advised eating anything i could bear, bread soaked in milk, sucked. yuck but worked.

otherwise, nothing else really happened, small bruises on/under the jaw, that's it.

Good luck

yes true! an opportunity for sleep is rare these days! i am worried i'll be in too much pain to have much of it afterwards though!

stay calm. U will be given medicine for pain and sickness and can have more if you need it. U may have dental swabs in your mouth but they will be removed once you are more awake. More than likely you will be sat upright post delivery. Spit out any blood into a tissue - dont swallow

please please abide by the nil by mouth rules.

nowwearefour · 08/07/2010 21:05

thanks for tips re drugs and eating. i am assuming they will have some suitable things there for me to 'enjoy'!

i will abide by the rules but am wondering what they are all about? why the encouragement- clearly dangerous if you dont?

I had pr Voltarol before the op (pr means Up the Bum, basically )

Would recommend

very dangerous if you eat/drink before hand. When given a GA the bodies reflexes are lost and so your stomach content will be at huge risk of rising up and into your lungs. It will then burn your lungs as it is acidic and you will probably end up in ITU with aspiration pnuemonia.

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 08/07/2010 21:14

My DH used to work on analgesics and third molar pains were what they used in their research.

Just make sure you take your full quota of pain relief.

nowwearefour · 08/07/2010 21:18

thanks- they are impacted and i will ask for full pain relief. and of course fully comply with pre GA eating/ drinking rules. interesting to understand a bit about why they exist. thanks 1little1big

co-codimol (the disolvable ones) will be your friend for a good week afterwards - stock up.

Dont make any plans for 48 hours after op. I looked like the elephant man after mine... this is no joke or exaggeration.

It took a good 5 days for swelling to do down.

Ice cream, mashed potato yoghurt milkshake all good.

ABitTipsy · 08/07/2010 21:24

Make sure you have someone to pick you up and take you home afterwards as you will be groggy from the GA for a while. I had all mine out years ago and it was fine, much better than I expected.

notnowbernard · 08/07/2010 21:25

I also looked like I had a facial deformity for about a week

DP tried really hard not to laugh at me when I woke up the morning afer the op...

Just want you to be prepared

ISNTitFUNtoBEinDISGUISE · 08/07/2010 21:25

@ your stomach contents rising up into your lungs! They are not attached to each other

nowwearefour - just follow the instructions that they give you, take all the pain relief offered. I had up the bum pain relief and antibiotics before the operation and they were brilliant and a lot easier to insert than I'd imagined (sorry TMI).

Just stay calm, having a general is odd as it's not like sleep, you conk out and then you wake up and it's later and all done! You might have some cotton wool in your mouth where they took the teeth out.

Honestly it's fine, don't worry.

1Littleboy1Bigboy · 08/07/2010 21:30

it rises up through your oesophagus and then goes back down the trachea - and as there are no cough reflexes to stop it entering the lungs, it does just that.

1Littleboy1Bigboy · 08/07/2010 21:33

and when they say nil by mouth it does include chewing gum, sweets, cigarettes!!!

ISNTitFUNtoBEinDISGUISE · 08/07/2010 21:34

Ah, you haven't replumbed the human body then

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 08/07/2010 21:34

I had two wisdom teeth removed under GA and they gave me anti-inflamatories intraveinously and I was hardly swollen at all afterwards just a bit yellow through bruising.
and was on solid food within days.

whereas the two I had removed at the dentist were brutal and I looked like I had gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson and was on liquid food for weeks

ISNTitFUNtoBEinDISGUISE · 08/07/2010 21:35

Cigarettes? again

ISNTitFUNtoBEinDISGUISE · 08/07/2010 21:35

Unless you are eating them of course, which is really bad for you.

1Littleboy1Bigboy · 08/07/2010 21:35

ISNTitFUNtoBEinDISGUISE - nope!!
