I had this done, all four at once under GA and was surprisingly unbruised and swollen. My mum had one of hers out in the dentists chair a couple of months later and was the classic chipmunk!!!!

You will be fine, yes it will be sore, but just be sensible. Use pain relief you are given, eat soft cool food. You will be surprised at just how quickly you recover. It's a quick op, so the GA is light. you shouldn't be too groggy. I came out of hospital later the same day and went on holiday about 3 days later....

I had all of mine out a few years ago. The doctor told me to say if I needed any pain relief when I came round. I didn't feel that bad but asked for some. Was given a shot of morphine. Twas bloody lovely!

I can't offer any more advice than has already been given, but lots of luck and take the opportunity to get plenty of rest

I had 3 wisdom teeth out under GA, including one complex one mixed up with a nerve so took about 4 hours.

Apart from throwing up loads for the rest of the day, I was eventually allowed home at 7pm (arrived 7am). Following day slowly ate soggy cereal, but then OK and no pain. 2 days later ate full Christmas dinner with no problem at all.

Avoided toast for a few weeks, though. Hope yours goes equally well!

Cigarettes? again - it stimulates the production of gastric (stomach) acid. Not all anaesthetists will cancel the operation if a patient has had a cigarette.

Can always tell a smoker post-op.... they cough and cough and cough and cough and..... and on removing the airway when the patient wakes up it stinks of stale fags - is really gross!!!

aristocat · 08/07/2010 21:45

hi good luck with this

my DH had all 4 out with GA and he was fine except for the sides of his mouth split and this was more painful than the missing teeth!

as others have said get plenty of pain relief

JimmyTarbuck · 08/07/2010 21:54

I had this done and would recommend all the pain relief stuff already mentioned. I would also take Arnica tablets afterwards to help the healing process.

Also, it's not a good idea to eat soup a few days after in a cafe where someone you reeeeeaaaally fancy works. Tomato soup dribbling down your chin is not sexy or alluring .

You won't be able to brush your teeth for a while after the op, (I was so swollen that I could barely open my mouth for about 24 hours), so get a bottle of Oraldene antiseptic mouth wash to help keep the sockets clean & your mouth fresh. Just swill it very gently in your mouth, not vigorously or you may disturb the clots in the sockets.

Rinsing with warm salty water several times a day is also good.

If you get any throbbing / hot feelings in your mouth after the op, go back to see the surgeon asap as you may have an infection.
I felt dreadful a couple of days after I had my wisdom teeth out, and took painkillers & went to bed. I woke up with burst stitches and blood and gunge all over the pillow

Oh yes, and cover your pillow with an old towel, as your gums may bleed a bit while you're asleep.

nowwearefour · 09/07/2010 19:47

thanks for good tips. is done am in pain but on co codomol i bled more than usual so they tested for clotting abilities. they gave me a sandwich which was crazy could not eat it!! will use towel and old pillowcase tonight.....

Keep taking the painkillers - you may want to try a little prune juice ,or at least keep drinking lots of water because co codamol can make you constapated .
Hope you're feeling better .

JustKeepSwimming · 09/07/2010 20:50

Glad it's over, hope you recover ok.

Keep taking the painkillers - remember to take before the pain hits, something about staying on top of it being better than trying to get control of it later.

Make sure you eat something/anything at some point

aristocat · 09/07/2010 22:48

glad you are feeling well enough to post

hope you feel better soon

nowwearefour · 10/07/2010 09:50

When I had mine out, someone suggested I get a syringe (without the needle bit) to flush out the holes (sorry!) left behind after eating. That way you avoid infections. I seem to remember going to sleep and having a lovely dream - then being a bit sore - definitely not too bad - pls don't worry.

Telesales650 · 10/07/2010 20:31

All of the above but rub vasaline around your lips to keep them supple as they can stretch and split which in my case hurt a lot!
Good luck!

CoteDAzur · 10/07/2010 20:38

Count your blessings that you will have it done under GA.

nowwearefour · 11/07/2010 09:42

thanks telesales- lips are starting to do just that so i will get out the vaseline as you suggest....

I found crisps and tomato pips very difficult for about 2 months afterwards.

Ds was still on purees when I had mine done, so I ate what was in the freezer of his. Bananas good as well.

nowwearefour · 12/07/2010 11:26

i am still in lots of pain and starting to get so bored with scrambled egg and mash potato! can see crisps wont be an option for a while. off to gargle with some salt water....
