glasgowmandy · 15/06/2010 18:43

last night my 8 month old DD woke after an hour in an absolute hurrendous state screaming kicking, could hardly catch her breath for crying so much, thought maybe she could have been over tired and had just woke herself up and got upset, but today she cryed in the same way for about 3 hours straight, i gave her some calpol and she settled a little after about 20 minutes, but still not herself, she was very warm so is tripped her down, her cheeks were bright red also.
the thing is thats probably only time ive heard her cry like that, shes such a happy girl never crys, its unusal to hear her cry to be honest so its really scared me, i dont know what could be the matter, should i phone the doctors? but what would i tell them? my daughter is crying! she had a bit or a temperature, shes fine other than that, totally lost to what it couldbe, any imput would be appreciated thanks x

teething
try bonjela first and calpol if not

rosieposey · 15/06/2010 18:50

I had this with DS from 6 months - i think its teething too - the telltale sign is the red cheeks and DS used to get super high temps too, it never usually lasted more than a couple of days though. Sometimes it can be a while before you acutally see any teeth but take it from me they are on their way, MrsBadger gives good advice r.e. treatment. HTH

glasgowmandy · 15/06/2010 18:50

you think it could be that? that crossed my mind but i cant feel or see any teeth, can they still get pain if they havnt shown yet? x

Try anbesol liquid for teething it works really well.

Yes the pain is worse before they show IME.

glasgowmandy · 15/06/2010 18:53

thanks, im actually glad if it is just teething. and not somthing else, least them i know how to treat it! x

have you tried the teething powders? I used to swear by them, so much so that I found them more helpful than calpol. I think it was distraction as much as anything but dd would begin to calm down immediately after I emptied the sachet into her screaming mouth!

usualsuspect · 15/06/2010 18:54

Could be an ear infection or something ..I would take to gp if I was worried

QualityTime · 15/06/2010 19:01

Second anbesol, it's instant and brilliant. then calpol for overnight.

oliviacrumble · 15/06/2010 21:18

I would check with the gp if it's an ear infection, if she doesn't settle fairly soon.

glasgowmandy · 15/06/2010 21:27

think ill see how she is tommorow shes sleeping soundly now and has been for a few hours, it just comes on all of a sudden! although its hard do you think i should at first when she crys see what she starts to grab? like if she grabs her ears or her face, if only she could talk!

OP posts:
oliviacrumble · 15/06/2010 21:30

If it's coming on all of a sudden, it could be the shooting pain caused by an ear infection. I'd bring her to gp tomorrow if she still has temp/disturbed night's sleep.

3littlefrogs · 15/06/2010 21:33

Get her ears checked - especially if it wakes her from sleeping. Ear pain is excrutiating when lying flat, but improves rapidly once the child is vertical or sitting up.

glasgowmandy · 15/06/2010 21:35

i will olivia thanks, i suffered froma lot of ear infections as a child so it a possibility, also with the teething, she is drooling like theirs no tomorow and she cant seem to bite down on things hard enough! im pretty sure she had a bit of a temp, it was a hot day though, she just looked very flushed around the cheeks, she cooled down when i stripped her and gave her calpol, she did sleep fine all night after the calpol at about 8 last night and was fine all today up to about half 3 when she became inconsolable, she didnt seem to be pulling at her ears or anything, was just really upset.

i know how painful ear ache is, its probably just as bad as tooth ache, its horrible! she stopped crying when we went into the car and walked about a bit, if she was in agony wouldnt she continue to go crazy no matter what we were doing? x

hellymelly · 15/06/2010 21:41

My dds were just like that with teething pain,I think maybe ears do hurt too.DD2 was screaming and screaming, terrible ,and frightening as she hardly ever cried normally. Calpol, teething granules/powders, and hopefully she will be reasonably comfortable.

oliviacrumble · 15/06/2010 21:42

Yes she definitely would! sounds like it's something that comes and goes. Hope she feels better soon!

Multimummy · 15/06/2010 21:43

I would take to dr's and explain sudden crying and ask ears to be checked incase. Ear infections are really painful, and the crying can be sudden like you describe.

glasgowmandy · 15/06/2010 21:45

im thinking maybe if its her teeth it could travel up and hurt her ears too, i know when i had pain in my wisdom tooth that my ear was so too, my whole face in fact!
do the teeth alwasy come first at the bottom? or can they come at the top or back first ? she seems to want to chew from the back, like thats where its bothering her. im keeping fingers crossed that tomorow is better, if not ill get her checked just for peace of mind x

shes just woke up and DP is lying with her, shes not crying but shes really rosey cheeked nad quite warm, given her some calpol but shes really really snuffly now too!

My ds suffers really badly for ear infections and the sure sign for us is that he tugs on his ears constantly and his temp goes right up to 39+. He cries when ever he is awake and doesn't settle...

So it does sound like she is teething to me. This really does make them really upset but is not a constant pain. I second teething powders the Nelson's ones we found best. DS's teeth started at the top but i think it is most common for the bottom ones to come through first.

Teething can also give them colds so that could be why she is snuffly as their immune system is lower.. Also look out for bad nappies (poo is more fluid and smelly nice)

Good luck it really is the pitts

bumpsnowjustplump · 15/06/2010 22:45

sorry that should be not nice... can also give them nappy rash...

RobynLou · 15/06/2010 22:49

I'd say teething too. DD had more trouble with teeth before they broke the gum - once they'd broken the surface it was ok.
She also got red cheeks and once had a v high temp (cured totally and quickly by calpol)

QualityTime · 15/06/2010 22:55

Ear infection is worth gettin ruled out.

FWIW when DD@s get ear infections they go really lethargic, hot and screamy but never tug on their ears, so even if she isn't it's worth getting them to have a look.

glasgowmandy · 16/06/2010 08:27

i am exhausted, was up till 3 am last night with her, most of the time she was just moaning not really crying, and she would only settle when i brought her in bed with me.her cheeks were boiling! and she was farting like theres no tomorow! shes fine this morning happy and churpy mummys dying! x

OP posts:
bumpsnowjustplump · 16/06/2010 10:22

As she is fine now I really dont think it is an ear infection but as Quality has said it will do no harm to get her checked out for ear infection.

poor you I know what exhaustion feels like and it is not good so I really feel for you!!!

Why dont you try and get to a GP today that way your mind will be put to rest that there is nothing more sinister at work than teething. Then if all clear you could pop to chemist for some teething powders (nelsons ones are fab they contain calamile so do settle them as well) and some teething gell...

Let us know what he dr says
