last night my 8 month old DD woke after an hour in an absolute hurrendous state screaming kicking, could hardly catch her breath for crying so much, thought maybe she could have been over tired and had just woke herself up and got upset, but today she cryed in the same way for about 3 hours straight, i gave her some calpol and she settled a little after about 20 minutes, but still not herself, she was very warm so is tripped her down, her cheeks were bright red also.
the thing is thats probably only time ive heard her cry like that, shes such a happy girl never crys, its unusal to hear her cry to be honest so its really scared me, i dont know what could be the matter, should i phone the doctors? but what would i tell them? my daughter is crying! she had a bit or a temperature, shes fine other than that, totally lost to what it couldbe, any imput would be appreciated thanks x

I feel your pain, glasgowmandy. DS2 had the same sort of symptoms at 9 months. We had 3 nights of similar crying, raised temp, rosy cheeks, followed by one day where he really wasn't his usual smiley self at all and was moany and clingy all day. Two teeth appeared at the end of that day and calm was restored. Hope your DD feels better soon and you manage some sleep.

no appointment for an 8 month old baby... Do you have out of hours doctors. We have a number we can call if our doctor is shut. It is usually at the local hospital that we have to go..

that fact she is fine now suggests to me it is teething and the teeth have settled for a bit. You may not see the teeth for a while as in my experiance the worst pain comes before they break the gums and once they are visiable then he isn't in any pain anymore...

glasgowmandy · 16/06/2010 14:29

i know its shocking, im going to see how she is when she wakes up today and if its still bad i will phone out of hours and just take her up hosp, even if it is just teething at least i can have peace of mind.
she just feels so warm when the pain seems to start thats what worries me x

glas how is she now?

weepootle · 16/06/2010 17:37

My dd has been like this the past 2 days and it's teething with her.

Btw, the powders aren't a patch on Anbesol liquid- it really is amazing stuff. Hope you get sorted.

oliviasmama · 16/06/2010 18:40

Take her to the hospital if your still concerned, our Childrens Hospital (Sheffield) are brilliant and have never once discouraged me from taking my DD, actually they encourage you to go, it'll give you peace of mind....and things are always so much worse in the depths of the night, so go and I'm sure they will put your mind at rest but you'll be reassured and a lot happier knowing the answer.

Poor little poppet, hope she's ok.

ppeatfruit · 17/06/2010 16:12

Yes teething is probably the first suspect; i would also look at her diet she may be getting the first symptoms of food intolerance to dairy or tomatoes ,oranges etc.

pilates · 18/06/2010 16:51

My doctor said you cannot get a high temp with teething and that its usually a sign of infection.

3littlefrogs · 18/06/2010 18:58

Please consider what I said about the pain coming on when the child is horizontal. Classic sign of ear infection.

bumpsnowjustplump · 18/06/2010 21:29

My dr said taht as well pilates he said "the only thing they get when teething is teeth." but I have to say it is just not true. DS has had a raging temp, nappy rash, cold and been unwell for a few days before the arival of each tooth..

Defo teething. Sorry matey, it goes on forever. Alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol, that way you can dish out something every couple of hours instead of waiting for the big dose. Also put it in her milk if she can't take the syringe or spoon, that way she gets the full dose. Teething poweders also an option and cold drinks - try cucumber slices too.
It is worse at night, but I do not know why.
