So good to see everyone is still hanging in here - I had half a bottle of wine with friends on sat & a couple of buds on sunday, but am feeling much more relaxed about not drinking so much now. Glad that you are still keeping us updated lucy as this is 'your' thread. I don't feel as though I have any more energy tho - must be the heat!

lilolilmanchester · 30/06/2010 17:31

gaffatt, interesting you should make the comment about having no more energy. I have been absolutely shattered the last week or so, have darker shadows under my eyes than before, yet am sleeping reasonably well. I was wondering whether it was my body reacting to not having its daily doze of alcohol, or just coincidence? I haven't given up completely but haven't been drinking during the week and sensible intake last weekend.

darkandstormy · 30/06/2010 22:34

Hiya to you all, and hope it istill going well.I have in the last eleven days only had two glasses of wine in total, big goal reached for me.I did not plan on drinking any, but some one wanted to pay me for a favour I did for them.I am determined that I am going to remain not a teetotal me as sucj, but a much improved me Hope all of you on the similar mission are doing well.I just watched the BBC programme drama "Reunited", that is the sort of thing I have a goblet of vino watching, so I did well to keep that corkscrew in the cupboard.

Hello. Have been watching this thread for a while, trying to muster the courage to join in, because once I join in, then I have to pay attention and get a grip. Been putting it off for ages, no disrespect, but been a personal battle!

If I can cut back/cut out it will mean:

  1. Feel better in the morning
  2. Sleep better
  3. Save money
  4. Skin will improve
  5. Lose weight
  6. General health impact
  7. Be less cross
  8. More inclined to be active
  9. Get more of my long list of chores done

So..... why can't I do it? Why do I keep saying "next month"???

Summer hols about to start for us and even more than ever, I know that I will crave my 7pm glass of wine....

MissPerrier · 01/07/2010 12:48

Hi, I have been watching this thread too. My relationship with alcohol is totally skewed! I suffer from the the old all or nothing demon. So I'm either truly virtuous Miss Perrier and lime, thank you very much, or wehey, bring it on Miss Partypants! Moderation is something I can't seem to do...yet? Still is really reassuring to know that I'm not the only one with 'issues" around alcohol. I agree with your list anonymousbird, all true for Miss Perrier!

LucyJones · 01/07/2010 12:54

Hi everyone and welcome to newcomers

it's just getting started that's tricky, once youvestarted it's easy I've found

the humid weather helps cos I've been headachey and craving water more than anything else, am trying to cut down caffeine to see if that helps the headaches

I know what you mean about the summer holidays though, I've got a week away with my parents and it'll be vety hard to limit what I drink then and I don't want to go back to the start

any ideas ?

MissP and LJ - phew, was worried I had killed the thread with my selfish rant, when of course I should have been congratulating you all, you especially LJ for getting this started, and for being really positive and inspiring. I could have written your OP myself, and nearly have so many times. Apologies I missed that off earlier - was nervous about "joining" the thread and just blurted out first things that came into my head. Bonkers really eh?

Am having a thought about drinking spritzer of an evening - more thirst quenching, less alcoholic and maintains hydration levels, but still has the wine-touch to it.. That might ease me off a bit. If I can do that for a week, with a couple of nights off completely (which I usually manage due to being designated drive or whatever), then maybe can turn the corner.

LOVED my appletiser taste off (thanks mumsnet) and have discovered Rocks cordials (not cheap but tasty and no nasties). Having truly delish soft drink alternatives, and plenty of them for variety has helped me a bit recently. But I can't get away from the fact that I LUUURVE a glass of super cold sauvignon blanc.

Ahhh.

gaffataperules · 01/07/2010 14:39

Hi MissP & Annon, welcome to the not teetotallers! I've been on here for 2 weeks now & it's the best thing i've done for ages - even DP has finally noticed I'm not knocking back the wine! Do doctors prescribe joining these threads? If they don't they should do, I guess the annonimity is one of the benefits of being able to be truthful for once and all.

Dark&Stormy - yes Reunited is my kind of thing to enjoy with a glass of red too, it was a bit like This Life (if you are old enough to remember!!)

(Is ChablisorSancerre still around?)
PS, still waiting for all of the 'benefits' to kick in - spare tyre still here

MissPerrier · 01/07/2010 18:53

Hey thanks for the welcome, and thanks for inspiring me while i've been following your thread. Had a lovely long glass off fizzy water with ice and a twist of lime, while cremating the dinner tonight (another issue another thread!) Would recommend it vv refreshing.

darkandstormy · 01/07/2010 22:54

Yet another camomile tea evening girls, good night to you all.
GAFFA Yes I remember This Life very well, these are def very wine friendly shows, along with Jonathon Ross. One night I had that much red watching him, that I think I sadly had a drunken dream of me and Jonathon...bit sad.

gaffataperules · 02/07/2010 12:56

snort! at darkandstormy!

I've drunk about 8litres of fizzy water this week - I've actually run out of it! I have been cutting lime & lemons into wedges & keeping them in the freezer, useful if there's no room in the fridge for the water.

LucyJones · 03/07/2010 08:26

Had a breakthrough - still feel headachey, think it's tge heat, and went out last night and drank soft drinks! It was easy - I think it was Chil1234 who recommended trying it just to prove I can go to a pub and not drink
well done everyone else, loving this thread

Oh dear,I have let myself and the side down.I had half a bottle of white last night, I went into a bit of rant mode to lovely dh , why is it we always hurt the people who are closest when we are stressed? I have a really big thing on Tuesday, which I am dreading, and I thought a couple of glasses of white would take it away, needless to say it hasn't, but has just given me a headache.I am so annoyed as I was doing so well too.Must resolve to do better now.I think I will feel better after Tuesday evening though.Hope everyone else has fared better than me and had greater resolve too.One plus is though I feel really crap after half abottle of wine, so my body is obviously not used to it so much now. Also, dosn't a cup of tea and a few digestive biccies feel great the next morning.

mole1 · 04/07/2010 10:46

Don't beat yourself up darkand stormy, just pick up where you left off. I had to give up drink last year when I had hepatitis - even one small drink made me feel hungover for days! I'm better now and can drink again, but don't really want to anymore. Unfortunately I have put on weight since then, I seem to snack more .

darkandstormy · 04/07/2010 11:43

Thanks mole, glad you are better, and have managed to ditch the booze, as for the snacks, well, we all have to have some treats in our lives dont' we

LucyJones · 04/07/2010 11:45

Hey don't worry about it
remember we haven't given up for good
just cutting down
good luck on Tuesday xxx

Thanks LUCYJONES. I will feel a big weight will be lifted.Ironically the thing I'm doing on tues is for a hobby but has become a bit of a big commitment tbh.Was supposed to be for fun but has become a bit stressful and serious.

LucyJones · 06/07/2010 17:03

Hi hope today goes ok let me know how you get on! xx

OP posts:
lilolilmanchester · 07/07/2010 09:24

hi all.... how did yesterday go darkandstormy? Hope you've stopped beating yourself up over half a bottle of wine (could have been worse!) I had way more that half bottle at a party on Saturday, but overall am drinking a LOT less and have lost 3lbs in the last few weeks!!Have been a bit headachey but have more energy most days. So, starting to see the benefit. Am ok if I have nothing, it's once I start I find it hard to stop...

LucyJones · 07/07/2010 19:10

Hi lilo
I broke my no wine at home rule this week
couple of glasses last night and tonight but will get back to it as no wine ordered on the online shopping, lol

Hi all

I'm joining this thread. Read through it and it's inspired me to go 'no wine at home'. First night tonight - past the 'witching hour', so far so good.

Keep up your good work Lucyjones and everyone here trying to get healthier and happier!

lilolilmanchester · 07/07/2010 22:10
