Anyone with underactive thyroid?

babysteffee · 04/08/2005 19:19

Been on thyroxine for underactive thyroid for just over a year and medication is getting me so stressed... levels up and down until they stayed on 200mcg. Memory is terrible and I forget to take the tablets, and to go back to the docs for more. Tablets make my heart beat really loudly which worries me, and make it extremely difficult to get more than an hour or twos sleep a night, literally lying awake for about 5 hours. When I don't take the tablets I feel tired/withdrawn/unable to concentrate on anything and stress makes everything ten times worse, so always trying not to get stressed... weight is increasing or staying the same whatever. I've talked to my doctor and had my tablets reduced 6 mth ago but he says there's nothing more he can do.

Seriously considering trying something like Alvidar or Thyax, has anyone tried these?

So are most people taking iron supplements as well?

suzywong · 12/08/2005 05:38

yep
to Iron tablets, particularly if you've had a baby or or bf in the last 2 years

jabberwocky · 12/08/2005 09:15

OMG, I'm glad I saw this. Answer is yes to both but dr. never mentioned the iron. Grrrr.

suzywong · 12/08/2005 09:18

jabberwocky · 12/08/2005 09:19

Will keep that in mind. Thanks for the tip.

dropinthe · 12/08/2005 10:16

God-I didn't know about the iron either-have been breastfeeding for over 18 months-only recently stopped.Maybe we should try Holland and Barratt for non contipation variety of Iron??Will keep an eye out.

suzywong · 12/08/2005 10:27

well you know I'm not a GP and I did have a four unit transfusion with ds2 before I was diagnosed and 12 months later my gp said my iron was shockingly low. You guys may be less of a bleeder though

What about this; SPATONE

just one sachet of Spatone provides the entire average daily absorbed iron requirement, helping to give extra energy at a time when women and girls need it most.

"As I suffer from very heavy periods I find Spatone helps my iron levels. It's much better than iron tablets, as they make me constipated. Spatone has no side effects at all."
A. Cuthbertson, Wiltshire

"My ferritin measurement (via a blood test) increased within 2 months of taking Spatone . I like the fact it has no side effects and is easy to take."
R. Owen, York

"I was pleased to be able to give blood again after using Spatone for several months."
T. Lean, Nottingham

"Excellent safe product, with no side effects."
A. Hopkins, W. Yorkshire

"I feel like a different lady after taking Spatone for 6 weeks. I have angina and always had to have 1 hours sleep every afternoon, but not now!"
J. Lewis, Clwyd

"When I was having thyroid problems, Spatone helped pick up my flagging iron levels and give me a much-needed energy boost."
A. Clifford, Gloucester

My GP has never mentioned that i should be taking iron or about osteoporosis being a big risk nor about waiting to have milk after taking my tablets due to problems with absorbtion. I was however advised not to eat foods with lots of iodine in but they never told me why. Think this pregnant whale will be chatting with the gp very soon.

dropinthe · 17/08/2005 14:26

Well, have started taking Spartone today so will eagerly await a new me! If you don't feel a difference in two months they refund you your money!
I think the Thyroxine is starting to work as still no period after 3 and half weeks-just a horrible nagging pain for the last week that its on its way!
Will be great to get back to normal!Lets hope the hormones do too!

suzywong · 19/08/2005 12:57

thanks

well my GP said bone depletion is only a concern if you are over-replaced and that I (one) should be getting enough calcuim from diet; a piece of cheese, a pot of yogurt and a glass of milk a day.
so clearly I was scare-mongering, sorry

That iron supplement sounds great, hope it doesn't bung you up

dropinthe · 19/08/2005 12:59

No,it promises that it doesn't that's why I went for it!Have a tendence to get bunged up anyway but really needed something as have such heavy periods.
I also get too much calcium from milk, cheese and yoghurt-so no problems there!

suzywong · 19/08/2005 13:01

cool

so has your thyroxene kicked in yet?

dropinthe · 19/08/2005 13:56

I think it has as almost a month since my last fortnightly!!

i had underactive thyroid now for 3 taers do not feel any better also have iron problem and painful heavy periods so feel crap all the time no energy carnt be bothered to do anything feel so low have 3 young young children my husband doesnt understand me when i say i carnt cope says he goes to work

TimeForMe · 20/09/2007 11:20

Hi

Just to say that iron and thyroxine are not to be taken together as iron inhibits the thyroxine. The iron should be taken at least 2 hours after the thyroxine.

keisha · 20/09/2007 12:09

thanks for that i will give it a try
